  1. Last night I rewatched McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I liked it even better this time around. It's incredibly beautiful and just a wonderful film all around.

  3. Since I got my Herzog/Kinski boxset on Friday, over the last couple of days I've watched: Cobra Verde - probably the weakest of the bunch, as it seemed underdeveloped and a bit unfocused. Still quite good, though. Woyzeck - much better, Kinski was amazing in this. Nosferatu - which I've seen several times before and love to death. Also included in the boxset, though I haven't watched them yet, are Aguirre - the Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo and My Best Fiend. I've seen each before though as both Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo rate among my favourite films (Aguirre in particular, which always makes my top 10). My Best Fiend is very enjoyable as well.

To Live and Die in L.A.

I liked it. The car chase was excellent and the last ten or so minutes caught me completely off-guard. I wouldn't rate as highly as I would, say, Manhunter, but I would rate it rather highly nontheless.
  7. Finally got a chance to watch Va Savoir yesterday. I can probably see how some would find it slow moving and dull. I personally thought it was quite wonderful and Jacques Rivette continues to amaze me with his work.

Just ordered Jacques Rivette's Va Savoir? I have high hopes in this one and Rivette hasn't let me down so far.

    BEST SEQUELS

Well, there's obvious stuff like The Godfather part II and Dawn of the Dead. I also really like Batman Returns, The Evil Dead sequels and Sanjuro (technically a sequel, right?).
  11. Last night I watched Skepp till India land, Ingmar Bergman's third movie, which wasn't very good at all, and I generally like Bergman's work.

Fair enough. I personally thought there were a lot of interesting psychological games and what not going on, but I saw the film the same week as the local annual international film festival during which I saw about 20 movies in a week, so my memory of the film is a bit hazy. This also reminds me that I've forgotten to watch The Tenant. Anyway, back on topic... During a sale I picked up Luc Besson's Subway and Abel Ferrara's King of New York (one of the most insanely stylish films I've seen in quite some time). I also decided to order Ulzana's Raid because I'd heard great things about it (it was excellent), and I also decided to order Rio Bravo since it was on sale and because it's awesome and stuff.

    ICHI the Killer

I wasn't particularly fond of Ichi the Killer. While I thought it was at times quite amusing, at other times it just came off as forced and overdone, although it's sheer audacity is somewhat commendable. The Eye I thought was very good for about the first hour, after then it kind of ran out of steam. A Tale of Two Sisters I thought was very good, and I agree that Dark Water is the best of the bunch. That film legitimately creeped me out, which does not happen particularly often. Fun fact: I've seen all the previously mentioned films on a big screen in 35mm prints. Go me.

    DVD Releases

The Herzog/Kinski collection shall be mine (when I can afford it, that is). And given that I've never seen Hour of the Wolf, and that I've heard some mighty good things about it, I'm kind of interested in checking that one out as well.

    Album Of Albums

Indeed, that's probably my favourite song by Prince. As for the poll, I voted for Sign 'O' the Times. It was incredibly close between that and Purple Rain, and while Purple Rain is probably a more cohesive work, the incredible diversity and overall brilliance of Sign 'O' the Times finally won me over.
