Paramount(Viacom) owns UPN so by going for 5 years they can get better syndication deals. And the episode costs were high compared to some of the other shows to be sure. The last season was all about getting some more cash when it comes time to sell it for syndication.

Shut up. Enterprise was just starting to get good but Berman fucked it up. Fans want a show set in or around the TOS or TNG/DS9 universe taking place primarily with the Alpha Quadrant so that there can be some familar races like the Klingons, Borg, Ferengi, Romulans, etc. It was insanely obvious and I have no idea why Berman decided that a before TOS show would work well. The concept works as a book or maybe a story arc but not as a standalone show.
