Of the 1911A variants, Springfield Armory generally makes the best. The Colt is great for name but SA's are usually better.

If I were going sub compact you go with the Springfield SubCompact XD. http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-xdp...b-compact.shtml I'd personally rather have the 4 inch model.

I mention the M38 as it would be cool to have a true almost WWII Soviet rifle. Currently I'm in the process of purchasing a Baikal (Russian version) Makarov 9x18 (basically 9mm) semi auto handgun. They are very reliable and and can eat dirty ammo without jamming much like a Glock. Other guns... not so much. The range on them is poor past about 15 yards but they make for good self defense or carry weapons and are fun as hell to shoot as a buddy of mine has a Bulgarian Makarov. Edit: This is what the Bulgarian looks like... Russian is a bit different. Usually nickel or chrome plated. Edit again... sorry nickel or chrome is the Miltex Bulgarians.
