    Poster Tournament Pregame

Speaking of the Barron video, is this the place to mention I didn't find any of the Kinetic-made videos funny? Sorry, K-Tic, you still my man fifty-grand.

Have you actually met anyone from the board?

He never made it to air, because 1) I wasn't running a call-in show, and 2) the decrepit system we used then made most calls—the couple of times anyone ever tried to patch live calls through the board—sound awful. After establishing that it was me he was talking to ("This is Matt, right? The host of the show?"), he introduced himself as Jingus from TSM. I don't remember if he told me his real name.

    The 2008 Pitchfork 100

I liked Mirrored and this song is pretty OK, but really, it has the same drum beat as "The Beautiful People." How did that not hurt its indie cred?

I'll tell you the entire thought process that went into the making and ranking of this list: "Hey, guys, let's make a list!" Then they put a playlist on shuffle.

What did you think of this? It's the one book that I keep getting too distracted by other fiction to read. It's pretty tight, if tough going at first. Not because it's "difficult"; all the characters are kind of despicable at the start. I warmed up to it eventually, and even found the ending kind of moving.

Aye. He called in to my radio show back in the day. I can't remember if I gave the station's number out on the air or he just looked it up himself. I'd say the latter, as no one called the station on a Sunday evening. Until Jingus, that is.

Aren't you 14? Get out of here. If memory serves, I (and we, if you include Smartly Pretty), live in the same town as netslob. Now there's a get-together waiting to happen.

Do/did you talk about the board?

A Close Call: A few years back, me and my at-the-time girlfriend were driving aimlessly around Tampa. I called Milky (he still lived there) with the idea of getting him to meet us somewhere, but he didn't answer his phone. Which, I suppose, is for the best, because I have no idea how I would've introduced him to her.

Comments that which don't warrant a thread

Oh man, this movie was hilarious. I mean that in a good way; if weren't for the threat of PC backlash, this film could be and should be advertised as a horror-comedy.

gary floyd's posts throughout this thread are just as bad as the fanboyism of Jaxl and UYI.

    Gary Hoey

My best friend in middle school and high school loved Gary Hoey. He was also fond of KMFDM, Death, and Megadeth.

Slash is only more successful right now because Velvet Revolver is more attune with what's popular on rock radio. It has nothing to do with Weiland or Rose's respective singing chops, or lack thereof.

Jobs w/ Highest Amount of Douchebags

Let's list jobs that employ an inordinate amount of douchebags. Cell phone stores, for instance.
  20. Time to change that. What seemed like a permanent hiatus for the band has ended, as they're releasing their first new album in five years this April! They have a song off of it, "The Flicker of a Little Girl," on myspace. I like it. Sounds like a return to their more guitar-oriented early stuff. I wonder if Dickon Hinchliffe no longer being in the band (which is a shame, by the way) means the guys have largely dropped the use of strings.

I love Magnolia, but that's neither here nor there.

Jobs w/ Highest Amount of Douchebags

The guy also had a display of movies he loved, as well (the only title I can recall is the hardly critic-proof Magnolia), but yeah, it was completely stupid and dumb that the display existed. What purpose is being served in trying to sway people from buying something?

Jobs w/ Highest Amount of Douchebags

Getting to be surrounded by books and receiving nice employee discounts to buy them was definitely great, but it was still retail. Plenty of stupid customers, dumb co-workers, and bonehead managers.

Jobs w/ Highest Amount of Douchebags

Honestly, I've never had any complaints with the service at any of the chain bookstores I've been to. Most of the employees at places like B & N and Borders are relatively self-aware w/r/t their position in the world. They work in retail and they know that. Independently owned stores, be it book, record, or video, tend to be home to the real douches. Any of you guys ever been to Kim's Underground in NYC? Great store, but engage any of the employees in whatever fashion and they look at you as if you farted. I do recall encountering an instance of snobbery at Borders, or at least witnessing it. I was at a store in Orlando where, in the DVD section, a display was set up called "_______'s Overrated Movie Club." This was several years back, so it had titles like Saving Private Ryan and Titanic. What was the point of that display? The guy worked in retail; it wasn't his place to put people down about their taste. (An aside: I'm surprised whatever supervisor/manager approved such a snide and flippant display. That would never have flown at the store where I worked.)
