    2008: The Year in Music

I'm feeling generous, so sure. I'm about to step away from the computer, though, so don't expect it until later tonight. (I'll pm it.)

    Arby's Toasted Subs

They get a stay of execution. Everyone else—even Whataburger—is gone.

Let's start talking Best Album of 2007.

You ever check out Sung Tongs? I think it's their best album by far. I can up it elsewhere if you want.

Let's start talking Best Album of 2007.

Also, jeez, Pitchfork, do something about the layout. Whatever reason they have for not trumpeting their year-end album lists like they once did—around this time just a couple of years ago, the top 50 was the feature attraction; if you wanted to go to the main site, you had to click another link—surely it's better than shunting it off to the lower right of the screen and having the middle (which most people notice first thing) be week-old album reviews.

Let's start talking Best Album of 2007.

I'm thinking about given each another go, but the appeal of both Strawberry Jam and Person Pitch are lost on me. I only concern myself with this because I thought so highly of Sung Tongs and like scattered moments throughout the rest of the AC-related catalog.

This is what finally got me to swear off fast food. Just awful.

    Britney Spears' SISTER is pregnant

Even though the thread was originally about Britney herself, it's since turned into one about her actress sister. Let's get it out of the music folder.

    Britney Spears' SISTER is pregnant

Is this girl involved in the music industry beyond having a sister who is involved in the music industry?

    Let's discuss Can.

Ranking the Can I'm familiar with: Ege Bamyasi Future Days Soon Over Babaluma Monster Movie Soundtracks Tago Mago

    2008: The Year in Music

Dan upped it at the other place, though I don't know if the link is still any good. I've listened to it three times now and eh...Merritt returns to the lo-fi aesthetic of the band's early work, but he buries everything in a layer of fuzz and distortion (hey, the album's title!) which I don't think helps any of these songs at all. Man, I love fuzz, generally, but it doesn't suit Merritt's material in the slightest. Regardless, listen to that Mahjongg album I linked to in the first post. It's this extremely rhythmic bunch of jams played entirely on synthesizers and drum machines. Cool stuff.

Best Bet The debut full-length from Black Kids will be the album of the decade.

Sara Bareilles melts my ice-cold heart.

That's a roundabout way of saying she sounds like Aimee Mann, which, well, she does.

Sara Bareilles melts my ice-cold heart.

I like her nose. That said, I listened to a couple of her songs on myspace and yeesh. Not my bag.

    Dan is pretty buff.

I was just being an asshole, dude.

    Let's discuss Can.

WHOOOAAAAA I DISCOVERED REVERB AND AUDIO PANNING cling clang bong bing bong EDIT: Seriously, though, I would be much more pleased with these two tracks if each were about half as long. I get what they were trying to accomplish, but the conceit on both are stretched to the snapping point.

    Let's discuss Can.

What's the opinion on Soundtracks? Given its origins, it's a little too erratic, but it contains "Mother Sky," which is the best of the Can epics, I think. I also love "She Brings the Rain."

    Let's discuss Can.

It's very odd to me that people hold Tago Mago in as high regard as they do. Differing tastes, I know, but the 1-2 gasbag of "Aumgn" and "Peking O" is such dreary musique concrete wankery. A little of each would've been fine—each has some neat moments—but 30 fucking minutes of it? Overkill.

    Let's discuss Can.

I'll eventually buy the remasters of Monster Movie and Future Days (my second favorite Can album) and get Unlimited Edition and Delay 1968 somewhere along the way. I'm sure I'll download the rest at some point, just to satisfy my curiousity.

    Let's discuss Can.

It took awhile for me to warm up to Monster Movie, but I eventually did. Malcolm Mooney's vocals defined "acquired taste."

    Luke-O turned 22 today.

That he's one of the ugliest people here says a lot.

    Let's discuss Can.

That's strange, since Karoli and Schmidt's vocals are pretty Damo-like.

    Let's discuss Can.

Soon Over Babaluma is wonderful. It's also the only post-Suzuki album of theirs I've checked out. Not that I'm missing much; aside from the as-yet-unheard-by-me Unlimited Edition, Can after SOB is, by all accounts, very dodgy.
