That's irrelevant, though not surprising. For better or worse, R.E.M.'s sound became so insular after the album, that commercial apathy was a given. EDIT: I don't care much for Out of Time, either, though I wouldn't say it's overrated. It had mass commcercial appeal, but the band's core fans usually agree it is one of their lesser albums.

Monster, by the way, is the most overrated album in their catalog. A few good songs aside (all of which were released as singles, incidentally), it's such a dull, dreary attempt at "rocking."

Have you heard of 'Crime and The City Solution'? Nope. And, excepting the Wire record (which, one day, will be mine), I ordered everything in the above post. The Wedding Present albums, by the way, are George Best and Bizarro, which are the only Weddoes albums still in print in the States (outside of Seamonsters, which I already have). And good job on Tago Mago, Arkham. I'll never forget the first time I heard "Halleluwah"; the entire band's performance on that track is extraordinary, but Jaki Leibezeit really shines. That he was able to maintain such a tight, minimal yet extremely funky beat with little variation is a credit to his immense talent.

Those dudes in Jet are assholes. When I worked the CMJ Music Fest last year, I had to watch the door for this performance they were doing at the CMJ headquarters. When setting up, they bitched over everything. Worthless primadonna cunts.

You have to consider that the trumpet can be a far more limiting/less expressive instrument than the saxophone. Given that, Davis worked superbly within those boundaries.

And to apply such a narrow and limiting term as "punk" to London Calling is to do it a disservice. It encompasses so many genres and styles, that calling it a rock record is the only thing that will suffice. A great rock record, too, natch.

London Calling, bitch. London Calling is a great rock record. Pink Flag is a great punk record. And though they certainly had punk spirit, outside of their first album, I really wouldn't call The Clash's music "punk." EDIT: Oh, shit. I hope this doesn't get me into an argument about "what is punk." The subject interests me very little.

Wire's Pink Flag. Fuck the Sex Pistols, Wire made the best British punk album.
