I didn't want to start a thread or post in the TV/movie folder at all, really, but I'm excited about the screening of El Topo here in town next week. The one time I saw it, eight years ago, doesn't count, given that I was way stoned and the copy was a vhs badly dubbed from a Japanese laserdisc.

I'm fine with other people calling Give Em Enough Rope a sophomore slump. I wouldn't call it that myself, though, as I happen to like it better than the debut, which I don't care much for at all.

I like it, but EITS is definitely working a formula, one that'll likely wear thin if they don't change up their sound on the next album. However, I saw them this past Monday and the songs sounded much better live ("So Long, Lonesome" was particularly moving.)

While I wait for an answer, that Live at Massey Hall 1971 set that came out this week is really nice.

Christ, dude. You serious?

I respectfully dissent. I don't find my comment as amusing as I did over two years ago, but I guess I'd still say that.

A little clunky in spots, but that really wasn't that bad. -
Hunter's Torn Quad should kill himself

That wasn't so much a joke as it was an argument over philosophical differences. -
Sophomore albums that aren't as good as the debut isn't the same as not being good at all. "Not the best way to follow up their debut" doesn't necessarily mean a slump.

Thread turned awful in the last 24 hours. Both Czech and Chave should spend a little time away from the internet. And that's not a knock on either guy.

Good thread.

Dear Board Friends, Should I become the first martyr in all this, please do what you can to have me canonized. Your pal, Incandenza

You leave him out of it, this is about you and me. You scared?

jsyk voted against me, huh?

What? For the record, I think a lot of the relatively straight amplified blues on the s/t is kinda boring.

Well, you're about 15 years out-of-date on your ebonics slang, then, chave.

I like Adventure; the highs are not as high as on Marquee Moon, but it is more consistent. I don't always listen to MM all the way through; I often stop after the title track.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_Club I did this a few years ago and got so wrecked. The Atomic variant of the game sounds insane. -
Bloc Party tried something different on the new one, but it didn't work for them. Even though I do not care much for either, Silent Alarm compared to A Weekend in the City shows a band better off at writing hook-filled guitar rock of the former than the ponderous, atmospheric keyboard washes of the latter. AWitC just sort of plods along whereas SA moves.

Any of that could constitute a slump, yeah. Basically, good first album; mediocre/bad second album.

Oh, come on.

Well, "Take You on a Cruise" is kind of nice. And I like the closing bit of "Narc," even with the unintentionally lol-inducing "you should see my spaaaaaace." I mean, rea.

Not really.
