    The College Football Thread 8/30 - 9/3

People who haven't watched a lot of LSU football before tonight weren't expecting this... They were wondering WTF was going on when LSU didn't come in and immediately roll over MS State in the 1st half. After having season tickets for years, I know that the team always starts slow in the first half of the first game. (Against ULM in 2003, Oregon State in 2004, Arizona State in 2005, etc.) That gets worse when they break in a new QB, like they're doing with Matt Flynn tonight. (He's started 1 game, the drubbing of Miami in the Peach Bowl 2 years ago). They really get rolling in the 2nd half when they've got a second wind and the opposition is puking all over the field. This is living up to that, with the DB corps getting 6 INTs, with Craig Steltz alone accounting for 3 of those. Dorsey and the D-Line guys are starting to get good penetration now that the MS State O-Line guys are tired, with Dorsey getting one sack and the guys getting lots of pressure on the QB on the other plays.

Lloyd may keep it together until he faces his Kryptonite... Jim Tressel and Ohio State. That would make the failure that much more humbling.

And out for the season with a combo injury / staph infection by week 10.
  6. I'm back as LSU. The "FireJoeMorgan.com Bowl" is now the "Trent Boyette's Texas Chili Bowl".

    The Shield

It was implied at one point that she was with the black hustler who helped her and Julian out with some of their cases. Most of those scenes were deleted, though, when they decided to keep the baby's father a mystery. The fact that there was a betting pool going on about the baby's possible dad implies that the other cops certainly thought she slept around, although a number of them were certainly joke bets like Capt. Rawlings or the "happy turkey baster".

Culpepper makes too much money to go to the Raiders without re-negotiating his contract, which he's said he won't do if the Dolphins trade him I could see him ending up there, but it'll be after he forces Miami to cut him instead of risking a training-camp injury.

I'll give you Houston, Detroit, and Oakland, but all the other games you mention here are far from gimmes. I won't call them "gimmies", but Minnesota has a questionable passing game, Green Bay has a questionable running game, and Tennessee seems to have lost almost every quality player not named Vince Young.

Well, considering they were bickering over whether it would be a 4th rounder or a 6th rounder, a 5th seemed to be the only logical way this thing would end. It'll be interesting to see how both teams fare, especially the Chiefs who snuck into the playoffs last year. I predict both teams will suck this season. Both are fairly old across the board and getting older, with KC's line being a shadow of its former self without G Will Shields, coming a year after T Willie Roaf called it quits. KC has the most talent of the two teams, but Larry Johnson is primed for a breakdown after playing the workhorse back last year and getting an insane amount of touches. (Anyone who gets 400+ touches in a season tends to break down and get injured the next year. If that happens to LJ, then it's a case of Herm Edwards doing it twice in the space of about 4 years, to LJ and to Curtis Martin.) Predicted records- KC will go 7-9 thanks to some favorable matchups. (They should beat Houston, Minnesota, Green Bay, Detroit, Tennessee, and Oakland twice.) Miami will go 5-11. (They can beat Houston, Oakland, Cleveland, and Buffalo twice. Asking for wins over the Pats, Jets, Ravens, Bengals, etc. is just too much.)
  12. While I'm a notorious hater on Brokeback, I feel justified in saying that it shouldn't make the list because it's too soon after its release to judge it on its merits. Much like its Best Picture nomination, IMHO, I feel it's making it onto the nominee list here solely because it's controversial and pisses off all the right people, not because it's a particularly good film.
  13. Anyone who wants to see the full ballot of 400 movies can look here: http://www.afi.com/drop/ballot.pdf The password is "AFIpress". I think that the list itself will certainly cause some debate, as there are some nominated pictures here that are SEVERELY overrated. Example - Some nominees include The Big Chill (1983), Broadcast News (1987), Jerry Maguire (1996), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989), Thelma And Louise (1991), Days Of Heaven (1978), Manhattan (1979), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975) IMHO, Days Of Heaven (1987) only appears on the list because the critics have a huge hard-on for Terrence Malick. Very visual movie with good cinematography, but not what I'd consider one of the top 400 American movies. (I won't debate Malick's "Badlands" appearing, though.) Broadcast News (1987) is a movie that's barely remembered today and it only came out 20 years ago. Hell, I think it was barely remembered 5 years after it came out. Manhattan (1979) was the start of Woody Allen's period of completely unwatchable "critically acclaimed" movies. Christ, put Bananas or Love And Death on there instead. (Sleeper is listed, though, which I feel is a good call.)
  14. The qualifications for this are wonky at best. There was a debate about this 9 years ago when the first list was released, as The Third Man was mostly foreign (money, writer, director, most of the actors). If not for Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton starring in it, it would have been a British film instead. That's not to say that The Third Man isn't deserving of being on the list, but it definitely skirts the qualifications of being an "American" film classic.
  15. The above all have a chance of inching in, IMHO. The ones I think have the best shot are: Saving Private Ryan (Much better movie than Deer Hunter, IMHO) The Matrix (Major cultural influence and film-making influence) Austin Powers (Major cultural influence) Sixth Sense " Titanic " LOTR: Return Of The King Movies from the previous AFI 100 most likely NOT to re-appear on this list: Bringing Up Baby Yankee Doodle Dandy Guess Who's Coming To Dinner Dances With Wolves Wuthering Heights Two of the three Chaplin movies (Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights) Best Years Of Our Lives Ones that will remain on the list, but shouldn't: Deer Hunter Manchurian Candidate All Quiet On The Western Front Annie Hall An American In Paris All The President's Men

5/22: #25, The King James Version Of Game Closeouts

Given the past of the LSU program, the tiger will likely be purchased from a zoo somewhere within the south. Mike I was purchased from the zoo in Little Rock, AR. Mike V (the most recent one) was purchased from a zoo in Alabama. It's not like this is the first time PETA's done this in our area either... They pulled this shit with Southern University, the historically-black university in North Baton Rouge, when their Jaguar mascot, Lacumba, died in the past few years.

Funny you mention "Who Let The Dogs Out"... When Vick was at a QB competition in the Bahamas recently, the crowd was barking at him and chanting "Who Let The Dogs Out." I'm sure he appreciates it better than "Mexico 7: I Just Gave You Herpes"... Unfortunately, the PA announcers at the stadiums won't be allowed to play "Who Let The Dogs Out", "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window", or anything else along that lines. Detroit blew that one for us all last year when they played Billy Joel's "The Piano Man" for their former QB, Joey Harrington, while he was starting for the Miami Dolphins. The League office put the kibosh on that kind of thing after the Harrington incident.
  18. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more...uble0312/1.html The steroid sting in Florida which revealed a doctor associated with the Pittsburg Steelers buying up a lot of HGH has also named Kurt Angle as a buyer from the same supplier. • Kurt Angle, a 1996 Olympic gold-medal-winning freestyle wrestler and now a star professional wrestler, received two prescriptions for trenbolone and one for nandrolone between October 2004 and February '05. (Angle did not return messages left with his spokesman.) Not that him using is a big surprise, but this could get a lot of negative publicity in the mainstream thanks to other names involved, like Evander Holyfield.

Hrm... If Arrington can stay reasonably healthy, I think I see a Saints FA signing in the coming weeks. Picking him up means that the Saints won't need to pin all their hopes on Patrick Willis or Paul Posluzny falling to them in the 1st round.

Who do they have left from within? Wade Phillips is now the Cowboys coach, while Cam Cameron is the Dolphins coach. I doubt they have any position coaches ready to step up and become head coach. Also, I think the loss of the two coordinators help seal Marty's fate, as the firing was due to a "dysfunctional relationship" between the GM and Marty, probably made worse by the fact that both wanted more input on the new coordinators than the other was willing to give. If they hire a coordinator to be head coach, the most likely target is Ron Rivera from the Bears, who was interviewing with the Cowboys at the least and was mentioned as a possibility for the Steelers, Cardinals, and others. In other news, Tom Coughlin is STILL employed. WTF?

The problem is that one major violation is being accompanied by a WIDE variety of seemingly-minor violations. Bush's family getting $300,000+ in benefits from an agent is the big one. That alone is enough to open the door and investigate other potential violations. Dwayne Jarrett was getting most of his rent paid by Matt Leinart's father. (Amateur eligibility violation. This one was overlooked after Jarrett paid back the difference and was put through a reinstatement process) Carroll violated the rules on using boosters to recruit by having Bush be involved in a conference call with Joe McKnight and his coach / guardian JT Curtis. (Recruiting violation. McKnight was living with Curtis at the time and contact with a player's guardian is considered contact with the player. Carroll being aware of this and not reporting it makes this potentially a huge violation.) At least one restaurant run by USC alums in Los Angeles had been serving USC prospects for free until the NCAA told them to stop it. (Recruiting violation) There are reports of agents having free-reign of the USC locker room and training facilities, with Bush even interning with one during a Summer break. Etc. Etc. Etc. If anything happens to USC, it will not be because of one single action but, rather, a death by 1000 cuts. A multitude of minor NCAA violations can actually open up a HUGE can of worms if a case can be made that there was a Lack Of Institutional Control around the football program. The combination of the major Bush story and a bunch of these little stories could potentially add up and give the NCAA the leeway it had to slam Alabama in the 1990s for repeated violations of NCAA rules. In short, the original Bush story itself may have opened the door for the NCAA investigation, but whatever else they find while performing that investigation is going to be the determining factor on whether USC goes on probation and, if so, how big of a hit it takes.

The rules may or may not be stupid, but breaking them will land you in a world of shit if the NCAA feels like taking up the case. On top of that, the specific reason given for contacting Reggie was that Carroll wanted to put the kid's mind at rest over possible NCAA sanctions on USC for what Reggie did. The ironic thing is that, by breaking the rules involving boosters and recruits, Carroll may have put the entire team on probation to get this one kid. The big thing I'll reiterate is that *Reggie* isn't the problem if this blows up in USC's face. The problem is that Carroll fucked up if this causes problems, as from all indications Carroll called Reggie to do this and not the other way around.

    Offseason College Football Thread

I don't think that will end up anything major but Reggie Bush needs to get the fuck away from the program. He's making us look bad. No one else is having anything said about them but him......seriously Reggie if you wanted to take benefits or whatever fine but don't fuck up shit now that you're gone. Also why is yahoo obessed with USC.....it's like they're trying to fuck up USC purposely. This story didn't come from Yahoo Sports doing an in-depth investigation this time... It came from the public statements made by Joe McKnight, his HS coach JT Curtis, and Pete Carroll, which are now being spin-doctored a new way every time they talk to the press. The story is getting play from every major sports outlet and I haven't seen one of them say Yahoo was the original source on this. The statements by McKnight in particular were carried live on ESPN and WWL TV (New Orleans), which is why JT Curtis is now trying to claim that McKnight pulled the story out of his ass after being asked "a thousand questions at once". In this particular case, Reggie isn't the problem as much as Pete Carroll is. *IF* things happened as McKnight stated publically, Carroll freakin' knew better than to let McKnight have contact with Reggie, direct or indirect, and yet he did it anyway. That would be a recruiting violation by USC that would cost them some scholarships at the least and probably McKnight as well.

    TSM Writers....

My leaving the main site in 2003 had less to do with lack-of-feedback or lack-of-views than burnout and lack-of-time on my part. (In particular, I'd just moved into a house and was having to do continual re-arranging and unpacking, was working overtime and manditory weekends at the office, and my shoot supplier had just been busted trying to hook up with a 14-year old boy and I wasn't throwing any more money his way.) IIRC, a lot of the other writers who left tended to do so because the product they were writing about sucked, as they were typically covering C-level shows like Heat, etc. that were just mind-numbingly bad. If someone wants to re-start the main site, they should probably start with certain things that don't require a weekly effort, like tape reviews and/or PPV reviews. TV reviews tend to be a waste of time unless it's the promotion's top show, like RAW or Impact, and the product doesn't absolutely suck.
