The BWP could almost be a new genre, interactive horror. The most common thing I hear by people who were frightened by it, is that they were scared by the reality of it, either thinking it was actually found footage, or believing in the mythos that surrounded the story. And that's actually why I like it, it's operating on levels beyond what you see on the screen, the movie was one part of a larger "project" for lack of a better word, which involved the advertising, the story of three kids getting lost, and the invention of the Blair Witch as a rural legend, all of which made lots of money at a very low cost. I admire the ambition behind that. I might even call it a descendant of William Castle's work (skeletons on wires in the theater, buzzers on the seats, life insurance being sold in the lobby, etc)

In the 80's? Shit, there was such a bathroom in the Nursing/Math building at my school until 1999, when the university fuzz set up a sting and busted 13 gay guys. There's a website that will tell you not only where such bathrooms are located, but what time of day to go, what type of guys are usually there, and any local "secret codes" you may need to know while cruising for gay sex. Alien isn't really sci-fi at all, but that's just me, life long horror fan, splitting hairs. For all intents and purposes, yeah, you're right. His best list was fine, but his worst list left something to be desired, I think. But that's a hard thing to narrow down, I think there's probably more bad horror out there than any other genre of film, except porn.

Jaws did that. Nobody wanted to swim... kids were scared to sit on the toilet. TCM had a similar affect, but the audience was a lot smaller.

The Exorcist is somewhat limited in scope, it's not really as scary unless you have some kind of religious base. And it didn't scare me at all, though I was raised in the church, and I can't really say why. Just didn't have that X factor I guess. Shining was scary though.
