The One and Only Vengeance Thread

You know what I think is great? And this may be just silly, but I'm pretty much impressed by the fact that HHH DIDN'T BLADE! It seems like Trips has always felt the need to blade in a main event PPV match in order to make the match seem more intense and brutal, but tonight's match with Benoit was proof that you don't need a bladejob in order to make the match feel outstanding. I've always been of the belief that there's too much blading anymore - seems like every PPV has a match you can attempt to measure on the Muta scale anymore. It's actually kinda refreshing to see a PPV with just clean, solid wrestling and not a bloodbath atmosphere as usual.
  2. The best Starrcade? 1992, of course! Simmons vs. Williams for the WCW title = mega-buyrate and the best event in 10 years! Just kidding . . . . . I think the best Starrcade nod has to go to 1988, there was a super-hot crowd that night, and there was really only one bad match (JYD/Koloff vs. Assassins) - the Luger/Flair match was probably the best they'd ever done (with the possible exception of Wrestle War '90), and it's just an all-around good card. The crowd goes BATSHIT when Rick Steiner wins the TV strap, it's crazy. Honorable mention, for me anyway, goes to Starrcade '87 - that show is OLD SCHOOL! There's not one match on the card that I would call "great", but the entire show is just enjoyable from start to finish.

Just picked up some classic PPVs at a store...

I would've gotten Mayhem '99 (in fact, I already own it) - some of that card is crap, but the opening Jarrett/Benoit match is really good, as well as the Benoit/Hart main event (though the Owen Tribute match was much better - I can't wait for the Benoit DVD to hit stores at the end of the month) Kudos for turning down Uncensored 00 and GAB 99 - two of the most atrocious cards ever put together by Vince Russo and Co. And I wish they'dve had Stampede '99 for you as well - that's probably in my top 5 favorite WCW shows EVER (and that includes the NWA days as well) - there's only one or two matches that really aren't good on that show, but the rest is just great. I even enjoyed the four-way main event, though the ending was kinda out of nowhere
  4. All I know is that the only thing I've marked out for so far this evening is the red-white-and-blue ropes . . . that rocks, harkens back to the day when . . . well . . . the characters were just as bad as they are on SmackDown now . . . . Am I the only one who watches Sunday Night Heat just to see what the PPV set is gonna look like? The GAB may suck tonight, but at least someone came up with a boss set-up for the show anyway
  5. Didn't appear to have one of those callers this time. Everyone pretty much behaved themselves The only truly exciting prospect from the call is the continued effort to release more DVD's and the potential to release more of the classic footage in different formats . . . .
  6. I think it's just a call done for stockholders and so forth. Linda probably does it from home in her PJ's or something . . . it sounds like there's probably a group of the WWE executives that handle the call and then take questions from the stockholders. Most of the interesting info comes from answers to the questions from those stockholders. I'm not sure how you go about getting involved, but I would think that anyone who owns WWE stock is eligible to call into the conference call.

    Raws from 95 to 99

There was an episode of Raw, I believe it was the Monday before SummerSlam, where Austin was backing up the ramp as it was catching on fire, and AC/DC's Highway to Hell was playing. I was completely marking out at that moment. That's honestly one of the last PPV's I was genuinely enthralled by the build-up, even knowing that Austin/UT may only be a mediocre match.

    The HOF DVD

The ONLY thing that really bugged me about this set was the Race/JYD match mistake. The packaging says it's the match from SNME in Jan. 87, but it's actually the match from WM III . . . . that's a pretty big blunder, and I'dve rather seen the SNME match than WMIII, which I've seen oodles of times. Other than that, it's a solid DVD set that any old-school fan (or someone who wants to get into the "old-school" mentality) will enjoy.

    Eddie's Blade Job

I didn't see the PPV, but I just saw a few pictures over at WWE's site, and I must say . . . HOLY SHIT! That's gotta be one of the best (or worst, whichever way you want to look at it) bladejobs I think I've ever seen. Guerrero was bleeding all over the place, and if you'd given him about 5 more minutes, the entire mat would've been red instead of the light blue. I'm still glad I didn't get the PPV, but considering that deepdiscountdvd has the DVD pre-order for just over $13, I think I'll pick that one up.

    Eugene

I can definitely see Eugene getting an IC run in the near future, maybe a tag title run with Regal or someone else who befriends him and helps him along the way. A World title reign? Probably not with this gimmick, and probably not for a couple of years, at least. But no question that he's HUGELY over, and you can never say never in wrestling storylines anymore. You just never know what may happen with this gimmick, there's no denying that it's getting over in spades . . .

I'm close to giving up on WWE forever...

Agreed. I really get kinda tired of hearing/reading some of the responses from people who complain so much about the product. Yeah, it's not perfect, and yeah, there's a bunch of things I would change - but for the most part, I really love Monday and Thursday night. Even at it's most inane, wrestling is still fun, entertaining, and sometimes enthralling programming. The brand extension is working, folks. It's made the "Big 4" PPV's more important again, and it's giving some new guys TV time, even if they're not in the main event scene. Yes, Smackdown seems far inferior right now, but it's entirely possible that some new stars will come from that show - Rene Dupree, John Cena, and yes, even JBL - he's a "hoss," but you have to admit that the current gimmick is something that gives him good heel heat and more credibility as a singles star. I'm sure that things will become balanced in due time. Smackdown seems to be a work in progress, while RAW has become the more "established" place to be. Who's to say that the trend won't be completely reversed in 6 months to a year? If it makes you THAT unhappy, then just quit watching. I get really annoyed when I read the same "I hate this shit, I'm gonna quit watching, it's so lame" crap every single week, and you still keep watching. Sometimes wrestling is good, sometimes it's not so good, but it's always worth watching for a few hours a week away from the headaches of the "real world" . . . . if you can't see it for that, you're not a fan anymore. That's my two cents, anyway.

    News: New DVD's

I'm betting that the new Bleeps DVD will have more modern outtakes and funny happenings from the world of WWE, and the "Bodyslams" section will have a few matches from RAW and Smackdown in the past couple of years.

    Wrestlemania XX DVD

Tell me about it. I bough t the set in 2000 for that price and it was a ripoff considering the tapes are in really crappy ep mode with terrible video quality an dsound. I hope for the dvd treatment but you really only need 1-14 cuz 15 on are all already released on dvd (though difficult to find). WM's 15-19 are really not too hard to find at all on DVD. Check out half.com, you can find them all there (and a couple, like X-7 and X-8, I've seen really cheap on there, simply because they can't be sold in a retail environment with the WWF logo on them). I got the X-7 DVD on there a few months ago for around $7.00 plus shipping

    scott keith's wmxx review

You're just a sad, jaded fan, aren't you? Whatever, I guess it had too much HHH in it, and the fact that it was viewed by a mainstream audience in a sold out arena rather than a shady convention center on a bootlegged video tape takes down it's quality... ROTFL . . . thank you! My sentiments exactly. Some people shit on the product simply because it's WWE, or because HHH is in it, or because it didn't come from Japan or the local national guard armory. I can agree with anyone who rated it four stars or higher (maybe even 3.5 stars, because it IS a subjective opinion to some degree) But 2.5 stars???
  16. res37618

    scott keith's wmxx review

That is the problem with the star rating system, and a lot of you guys get your panties in a bunch when ANYONE thinks a match was better than you did, especially Keith. I agree totally that it was a 5-star match, but I'm not one of these people that think there are only one or two matches in history worthy of 5 stars. If you really think about the hundreds (actually, thousands) of matches that occur every year (WWE, TNA, ROH . . . and in previous years WCW/NWA, ECW, AWA, etc.) then 30 matches or so is a pretty miniscule percentage of what we've seen over the last 30 years or more. So, get a grip. If we thought it was 5 stars, what's wrong with that? I GUARANTEE that many of you are discounting the quality of the match simply because HHH was in it. He performed at a great level last night, and definitely did what was best for the business.

    scott keith's wmxx review

I thought Keith's rant was pretty much right on the money. It was a really odd show, no doubt, but it definitely had that WrestleMania feel, and the main event kicked ass in about fourteen different ways. I freely eat my words - I thought for sure that a triple-threat main event could not be pulled off (a-la WM2000's Fatal Four Way), but it was absolutely awesome. With this show, what was good was AWESOME, and what was bad was REALLY BAD, and even kinda weird (speaking of Brock/Goldy). I'd rank it in the top ten of WrestleManias, definitely, but definitely not number one, or even two or three.

    WMXX Match Order

I'm having a hard time deciding which match should be the ME for WMXX. I'm cool with either Angle/Guerrero or HBK/HHH/Benoit, so that either way someone who really deserves to be in the main event is there. I'd have to go with Angle/Guerrero though, simply because I'm against the main event being a triple-threat at what's supposed to be THE biggest PPV of all time . . .
  19. Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about the Best of Confidential Vol. 2 that's "supposed" to be coming out along with Monday Night War on Feb. 10th. Vol. 1 wasn't stellar in the actual "Confidential" pieces per se, but the extras (Bret/Bulldog from SS'92, Bret/HBK from Montreal, etc.) made the DVD worth purchasing. I'm assuming that WWE plans on putting three or four extra matches on there, but I've heard nothing about it yet . . . . or even if the DVD is still coming out Feb. 10. Any info??

    New WWE DVD's

Question is, are they going to release the old WWF PPV's on DVD here in the US? Seems like those would sell really well over here . . I don't have any desire to have them all, but getting shows like WrestleMania 3, 8, 10, SummerSlam '91, Survivor Series '87, and so forth would be bad-ass . . . .

CORRECTION: It was Judgment Day 2003 that was in Charlotte, NC . . . 2002 was in Nashville, TN My bad

    PPV in Philly Question

Just thinking about this, kinda off the subject but not quite . . . . An area that has completely lucked out in the way of WWF/E PPV's in the last 7 or 8 years is North/South Carolina. Before '96, Vince and Co. NEVER had a PPV in the Carolinas - come to think of it, he'd never really even done TV PERIOD in the Carolinas. Starting in '96, there's been . . . . IYH: Beware of Dog I/II '96 (Florence, SC/Charleston, SC) Unforgiven '98 (Greensboro, NC) King of the Ring '99 (Greensboro, NC) Unforgiven '99 (Charlotte, NC) SummerSlam 2000 (Raleigh, NC) Survivor Series 2001 (Greensboro, NC) Judgment Day 2002 (Charlotte, NC) NOTE: That's a PPV EVERY YEAR in North Carolina from 1998-2002 - FIVE YEARS! Plus, 1999 saw TWO PPV's in North Carolina. Greensboro has had three PPV's and two of them have been "Big Five" PPV's Pretty impressive, if you ask me. I don't know why Vince all of the sudden got a hard-on for doing PPV in the Carolinas (other than the fact that he was born in North Cackilacky , and the crowds are usually pretty hot) I guarantee you . . once Charlotte, NC has finished the new downtown arena, they'll get one of the big PPV's, probably Royal Rumble or SummerSlam.

    PPV in Philly Question

And 1/3 of Wrestlemania 2. Seems odd one of the major cities in america hosts very few WWF/E PPVs. Well, for the sake of giving them "some" credit, let's call the Rosemont Horizon a Chicago arena . . . . therefore, we've got: 1/3 of WrestleMania 2 The WWF Wrestling Classic (their first PPV!) Survivor Series '89 SummerSlam '94 WrestleMania 13 Judgment Day '98 Backlash 2001 So, counting those up, that's 7 PPV's . . not too bad

    Alright, What the Fuck

Totally agreed. . . you've taken the words right outta my mouth. Everyone bitches and moans because the storylines are so bad, and finally they come up with an old-school "I'm gonna kick your ass for breaking my neck" angle, and you bitch about that too. I'd almost bet that the Lesnar/Holly match won't even main event the Rumble anyway, so what the hell will it hurt to do the payoff match of their feud on PPV? Who knows, it may even surprise you . . . Your beloved Benoit will get his title shot soon enough, I'm sure. God, I really think some of you guys lose sleep over Benoit's supposed "mistreatment" by Vince . . . would even bet some of you are on prescribed medication because of severe depression and suicidal tendencies because of the "Great Benoit Conspiracy of 2003". Hell, I want to see Benoit wrestle Lesnar (and hopefully wrest the title from him) as much as the next guy. But c'mon, you're acting like ONE match (and a blowoff, probable semi-main-event match at that) is gonna just bankrupt the company or something. At least give them credit for booking a semi-sensible, old-school angle that doesn't involve wrestling over a useless GM's job, announcer's job, or something else equally as retarded. In other words, lighten up.
  25. Hey guys, Just wondered if anyone has ordered the new DVD's - the site said that they should be shipping the first week of December, but I was curious as to whether that was actually happening . . . Furthermore, is there anywhere you can purchase them at a reduced price? I'm assuming you have to order them from nwatna.com, but I was hoping maybe they're available elsewhere . . . Thanks guys!
