    Column O' Nonsense: Indy Lesson

Don't take this the wrong way, but the stuff you've posted on this forum is really bad. Not only is it long, but it'd dull and unrefined. The writing's not tight at all and the majority of it lacks any kind of flair or pinache. I couldn't make it through the first couple of paragraphs just because it was so monotonous.

Sammy Sosa is getting to be a liability.

He came up in the bottom of the 9th with a chance to win it and struck out, making him 0-for-5 on the day with four more strikeouts. The fans are really starting to lay into him and rightfully so.

NOMAR~!!! with a two-run shot in the 7th to put the Cubs back on top. And a couple fans fell into the basket to get the ball.

Padres had a runner on first down 2-0. Ground ball almost up the middle is stopped by Grudz, who flips it to Nomar, and looks to get the force out. The Padres' runner makes an unorthodox "slide" that makes Nomar throw an off-balance throw, which winds up in the seats. Froeming called the runner safe at second, citing that Nomar wasn't on the base when he had the ball and thus, runners move up to second and third with nobody out. Replays from every angle show that Nomar was clearly on the base when he had the ball and had the runner out by a mile. More drama later in the inning, as a Padre wasn't called out on what appeared to be a failed check swing, leading to the ejection of Larry Rothschild.

I think it was Al who said he had ranking of all the umps in baseball. I'd be curious to see where Froeming ranks. That man needs glasses or at least a breast reduction so he can see what's going on in front of him.

Sammy Sosa is getting to be a liability.

It's quite clear the regardless of who's managing the team, Sammy is running it. Until he's gone, I don't think the Cubs are going to win. But if he keeps playing like this, it's going to get hard for even his biggest supporters to keep looking the other way.

Agreed. That fat fuck had the god damn play right in front of him and it wasn't even CLOSE. What a crock of bullshit.

First inning, the Cubs have runners at the corners with one out and Sosa up. Logic dictates that he gets at least one guy in with a sac fly at the very least. He strikes out on three pitches, the third being nowhere near the strikezone. Ramirez, the next guy up, gets a quick base hit to plate the run. So why is Sammy still batting in the cleanup spot? Oh yeah, because he's a "sensitive warrior". To hell with feelings; when you're the cleanup hitter and can't even get a guy in from third with less than two outs, you probably should be batting elsewhere. This is just one incident, yes, but this isn't anything new and the fans aren't going to put up with it much longer. The boos are getting too hard to ignore.

You just got that feeling that it was going down after they intentionally walked Vlad. In hindsight, it probably would've been a better option to just go right after Vlad. Had Javy come through in the 8th, they may have had a shot, since they didn't go down easy in the 9th.

A.J. Pierzynski's such a retard. After the Giants score two in the ninth to tie things up, the Pirates get a man on; Ty Wigginton has a full count on him and the runner goes, except it's called ball four. Apparently under the assumption that you can still throw out a runner at second after the batter walks, A.J. throws the ball down to second, which promptly goes into centerfield, allowing the runner to move to third. Thankfully for the Giants, they managed to get out of it all without giving up the run, so they head to extra frames. But I'm telling you, take out Bonds and Schmidt and this team sucks. Unless they play the Cubs.

Just to illustrate how horrible the Marlins' offense is (as if losing last night by only giving up two hits), they look to be en route to losing another one-run game, as Pavano has been brilliant through eight. As usual, he had some problems in the first, and that, along with him being due up third in the eighth, will probably keep him from going the full nine. It's a shame that he's only given up one run to the potent Cards and will probably get the "L".

At this point, it seems unfathomable to think that just three years ago, the Mariners were having one of the best seasons that we'd seen in forever.

I was watching the end of that game and I think LoDuca had a case. Much like the Cubs/Padres game, the homeplate ump in this game had a very tight and at times, inconsistent strikezone. This is a shining example of why the Marlins aren't going anywhere. They gave up two hits tonight and lost. Good pitching's one thing, but this team really has no offense.

This is true. He left in the third with lower back pains. This is the stretch in the season where the Cards stellar pitching can hold it all together. Man, no kidding. He's just not the guy he was last season and I've gotta wonder if something's still wrong with him or what. Dusty may have ruined him. The Cubs are creeping back into the game slowly, but they're running out of time. They were down 8-2 and now are down 8-3. They had a golden chance to put quite a few runs on the board, but Alou popped up with two on and no out, clearly trying to hit it out. Lee lined out on a hard-hit ball and they ended up having to settle for just one run. They're gonna have to do something in the 7th, since it's more or less lights out from that point on.

RE: The ump's strike zone It doesn't help that Mark Prior has been absolute garbage tonight. He had five walks through three, a hit batter, 10 hits, four earned already on the board and left with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth. Most annoying; he had 83 pitches through THREE innings. I get the feeling that Dusty may have fucked Prior over last season. He'll look great one start and awful the next. And the Cubs just gave up another run with a mental mistake. SURPRISE! When's basketball season start?

This homeplate ump for the Cubs game is awful. Prior doesn't have his best stuff, but he's totally been fooling the ump with his curveball, including one that should've been called strike three but was called ball four instead.

    ALF Season One

I ordered it for $21 yesterday and can't wait until it gets here. I was going to pass initially because of the $32+ price tag, but finding it for that price, I couldn't let it slip by. I was disapointed to just hear that the episodes appear to be the edited for syndication cuts. If this is true, I may turn around and sell the set. The whole point of TV on DVD is to get the uncut, original versions of the shows.

    Edgar Martinez to Announce Retirement

As some of you've already heard, Edgar Martinez will announce his immediate retirement in about a half hour. This is obviously something that's been a long time coming, especially with his poor offensive year. His reduced playing time in recent weeks seems to be what's sealed the deal. Additionally, Corey Lidle has been traded to the Phillies for three players. Something had to be done with the Phils' starting pitching, but I don't know if Corey's the answer. Also, Pat Burrell is done for the season, as he'll undergo surgery for his wrist. A definite blow to the already fading Phillies, even though he still hadn't matched his numbers of a couple of seasons ago.

    Freaks...... on DVD Tues.

Was elated to hear about this and the Bad Seed getting a nice DVD treatment a few months back. I would be getting them both later today, but I decided to just place an order with DDD, since they had the Alf set for $21. Can't wait to check it out, though.

    Seinfeld DVDs Available for Preorder

And it's Christmas for all Seinfeld fans. DVD purchase of the year, folks. Best yet, this is just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, so there'll be plenty of time to let this massive set sink in.

Yes, because that's such a complimenting thing to say about the match (which I think is overrated and generally dull, IMO).

I think tonight's game between the Indians and the White Sox prove why neither team would last long if they somehow snuck into the playoffs. Absolutely terrible pitching, especially the bullpens. Indians jumped up 8-0 by the sixth, only to have the Sox put up a seven spot in the inning and make it a one-run game. It was 9-8 Indians going into the ninth inning, but more bad pitching has ensured that the Indians get to add on several insurance runs.

Sammy Sosa is getting to be a liability.

Excellent column by Jay Mariotti in the Sun today, about Sosa. It's hard to argue with anything he says and you've gotta believe the pressure to move Sosa in the lineup is going to increase now that it's not just the 'net fans who are calling for it. Here's the article:
