WWF Survivor Series 1991 & This Tuesday In Texas
Bruiser Chong replied to KingPK's topic in WWE Multimedia
Watched this with a couple friends the other night. Just awful. One of my friends actually went to this show, though he has little recollection of it, other than hiding his face for the majority of the Hogan/Undertaker match. The opener features the Survivor Series cop-out eliminations at their worst. Almost as annoying is the lethargic build to it. They go on for 20 to 25 minutes and only have two eliminations. The second match is like a Wrestlecrap Who's Who, but enjoyable for the commentary and Berzerker's over-the-top antics. Everything's just dead after the title match. Looking back, it's so transparent how this was a pretty pricey shill for another PPV less than a week later. -

I want to say it was between $10 and $15. I hate how they dub out the original opening theme. -

Adnan and Mustafa more or less blamed him for the loss at Summerslam, called him soft, and he went on a multi-week quest to get his country back. -
It's weird how the commentators don't make a big deal about Hart being Valentine's new manager once the match starts, given Ventura's pre-match interview. I'll assume that because the Superstars tapings tended to go on for ungodly durations, Hart had already appeared as Valentine's manager earlier in the taping. I'm only a bit into this show, but Heenan's already had some great lines in the studio vis-a-vis Gorilla's anatomy references and giving clearance to air the SNME footage. Cool seeing them get into the DiBiase angle, too. Since I wore the Coliseum Video of Wrestlemania IV or as a kid, I've seen many of the interviews and segments associated with this angle.

WWF Survivor Series 1991 & This Tuesday In Texas

This show almost scarred my youthful mind when I watched it on PPV. Summerslam '91 had been my first wrestling PPV and I remember building my case to order Survivor Series before that PPV had even finished. I recall taking pride in knowing Hogan and Taker was going to be the final match on the show, which didn't even wind up being the case. The match going on third wasn't enough of a warning sign to let me know something was up. That match KILLED the rest of the show for me, though. I don't think I liked Thanksgiving for another two years. At any rate, it's a pretty shitty show. The only match with any real promise ends in a comically cheap way, even for Survivor Series standards. The truncated final match feels unnecessary without the captains there. The tag match was a downer, too, since it was another piece of evidence the WWF was en route to breaking up the Rockers. The commentary's the only real reason I've watched the show in years since. Heenan's spot on all night. "The Beverly Brothers grew up with each other. The Nasty Boys have known each other for a very long time. The Bushwhackers were raised in a barn together." -
Sounds like a Peavy-to-Atlanta deal is near complete. I guess it's time to brace myself for the inevitable four-year Ryan Dempster contract.

Aside from the DX antics, these last two episodes have been absolutely brutal. Good thing we're not far off from the Montreal Screwjob. Tough to say what happens and what doesn't happen based on Bret's departure, but everything seems so aimless right now.

No clue, but if the Cubs can turn Felix and some other pieces into Jake Peavy, I'm all for the move. I, like most Cub fans, had high hopes for Felix, but he doesn't look like he's going to be given the opportunity to blossom or capitalize on such a chance. I say move him while he's still got some value and then hope he becomes another Corey Patterson. I think Patterson's failure to develop much further in his three seasons out of Chicago shows that it wasn't entirely the organization's fault.

I've heard some reports the Padres are expected to trade Peavy within a week. The Cubs and Braves are currently the leaders, with the Dodgers being a long-shot team. Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, and Ronny Cedeno were among the names I heard mentioned. That's fine by me.

Lines weren't long when I got there. Out the door by time I left 20 minutes later. This was my first time voting, so I got that sappy "I'm part of history" feeling. Of course, that was almost ruined by the lady in the parking lot trying to pass out information about the "pro-life candidates." If there had ever been a time to declare that you love abortion, this was it.

How on earth can you forget to watch the second part? The two biggest matches on the show in retrospect are on there! And it looks like we've got a lot of people needing this on DVD. Anyone frequent any trading sites? I sense this may be one of those instances where we'll need to seek out someone who doesn't post here for a copy.

I'd imagine the only reason we're getting it now is that we're a couple days outside of November. I love this show, women's match be damned. Since some have already pointed out my go-to oddball fact about Savage and his teammates, I'll just point out that this is the first of three consecutive Survivor Series matches that involve Randy Savage in opposition of Hercules.

2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Bruiser Chong replied to Bored's topic in Sports
Well, temporarily ignoring the fact that the first couple of sentences are plagued by bad grammar and spelling, the anecdote itself makes little to no sense. Holy shit, you're right. I just read the first sentence and even though it involves me, I didn't know what it was trying to say. Long story short, she'd invited me to this thing on Sunday when Game 5 was originally not slated to last 72 hours. So I didn't want to break that off, even though I knew it meant missing out on the last few innings of a possibly clinching game. I guess it was because I wanted the series to last five games. After the great seven-game series, this felt a bit anti-climatic. I don't mind the Phillies winning, since the team itself is made up of mostly good guys. As for not just hitting reply, I closed the phone before deciding to reply. I guess I just decide to create a new message instead of replying to the actual message. True. She didn't seem to care, except for that I had misspelled "furious." V's and U's look too similar on my phone, especially with the aid of alcohol. -

My 2008 WS anecdote: I'm talking with this girl right now and she had my over for win a shitty horror movies tonight. She's got roommate, so they were watching with us. I texted my friend at one point to ask the score. He said the game was over and I text back, "I'd be furious if I weren't intoxicated and sitting next to Sara right now." My friend never got the text. Why? Because I accidentally sent it TO Sara, who just happens to be before my friend in my phone book. Talk about your red-face moments. Drunk texting = bad. -

I can't believe people are upset they didn't call the game and give it to the Phillies. What a bitch way to win a World Series. -
The second half convinced me that I need this event preserved on DVD. The commentary during the Hangman/Goulet match is too much. I love how exasperated Foley gets any time the shirtless guys are on camera. If anyone who put this show onto DVD wants to mail it to me, I can make copies for anyone on the board who wants to cover the S/H.

I've had 24/7 for over a year and this is the first thing that's made me regret not owning a DVD recorder. I've seen a ton of stuff I would've recorded, but this is the first full show I've seen on the network I feel I would revisit. And that's all because of the commentary. There's some interesting match-ups and within the context of the era, this was a huge show full of big matches. But it's the commentary that makes it for me. Foley and Cole obviously respect (and know) the historical importance of this show and many of the participants. But they also realize how the style is, for the most part, too slow and plodding for viewers familiar with the current product. Because of this, their lighthearted commentary is a delight. I didn't know Cole was capable of being humorous.

I lost any interest in the album when I found out it was all Autotone Kanye. Fuck that noise. New Game is decent, but the guy is still so generic in his delivery and persona. I don't advocate the whole gangster lifestyle, but Game is so inauthentic in that area, even though he plays up that whole aspect of his persona. His metaphors are weak and for the love of god, enough with the name drops. Some say that shows his knowledge of the genre; I say it's a bunch of ass-kissing and sign of laziness. T.I.'s album is a mixed bag. There's some great lyrical content that's going to get lost because so many of the album's tracks sound like they were made for radio. A lot of people are going to remember the singles fondly, but unless you listen to and really absorb the lyrical content on the non-singles, it's going to get remembered as a fluffy pop-rap album. But I guess when you're heading to prison, you want your last creative output to leave a firm impression on the minds of as many people possible.

Oasis: clutching to relevance till their knuckles turn white
Bruiser Chong replied to Lil' Bitch's topic in Music
I've got a couple buddies in their late 20s who have seen Oasis live at least a dozen times. They've actually gone to other states specifically to see the band live. They're going to a show in Detroit a couple months from now, too. Tickets are like between $50 and $75. I never really saw the appeal outside a few select tracks. -

I expected results no different from what we got tonight. The real test comes when Cole Hamels is not on the mound. -
I'm sure the right will counter that Obama has likely spent that much on crack rock. He is black, after all.

Examples of Announcers Ignoring PPV Matches In Progress

Monsoon and Heenan don't acknowledge the Tatanka/Martel match during Wrestlemania VIII until it's almost over because Heenan's still going nuts over Flair losing the title. -
Look at that smile, pure evil. This reminds me: I just read an article about Juan Pierre's agent more or less requesting a trade for his client that would use him as a regular. Hmm, are there any teams out there without a center fielder, lead-off man and veteran presence? Thankfully that last part doesn't apply to the Cubs and they've already been burned by Mr. Pierre once, but I don't believe the Rev's team has yet had that honor.

2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Bruiser Chong replied to Bored's topic in Sports
I wish Al Keiper were alive to see this. I'm partial to the Rays, but could stand to see the Phillies take it, so long as it isn't a complete thrashing. The Phillies played two of the more inferior teams to make it to the postseason, so it'll be interesting to see how they stack up against one of baseball's best.
