I did some checking, and out of alot of the big name starters in the AL (Yankees fab-four, A's fab-three, Pedro), only one starter is undefeated against the D-Rays, and that's Mulder. Kevin is starting on Friday in Tampa. Appier is 8-0 lifetime against the D-Rays in 8 starts. Also, if you check Appier's split stats on Yahoo, August is his best month. Hopefully he can keep that going. I wouldn't say Appier is washed up, if he's able to be a better pitcher than Kyle Snyder is right now, then that'd be fine. Plus, Appier is getting 90,000. Compared to the insane salary he got from the Mets, this is a good deal.
