Credit - ESPN.com MINNEAPOLIS -- The men who golfed with Herb Brooks on Monday morning, just hours before his death in a single-vehicle accident, say they won't be surprised if authorities conclude that Brooks fell asleep before his minivan crashed. Hockey sticks in the form of a cross and a University of Minnesota cap mark the site of Herb Brooks' fatal crash. Brooks was in the state last weekend for a celebrity golf tournament where he attended two fund-raisers, played 29 holes of golf in two rounds and stayed up late two nights socializing with friends. All before he took off in his minivan about noon Monday for the 190-mile drive to the Twin Cities to catch a plane to Chicago. Brooks didn't make it, veering off the road near Forest Lake just 25 miles north of the Twin Cities. "It's only speculation, but I think he was tired," said John Mayasich, a 1956 and 1960 Olympian and Gophers hockey legend who had Brooks at his cabin over the weekend. They golfed together Monday. Mayasich and others who were with Brooks during his last two days said he spent that time supporting his beloved sport of hockey in a whirlwind fashion that was typical of him, but at a pace that would fatigue men half of his 66 years. "I'm sure that, like everybody, he was tired because he ran around so much and he was out playing golf in the hot sun," said Tom Micheletti, chairman of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame's board of directors. On Saturday, Brooks attended a fund-raiser for the Eveleth Hippodrome. Later that night, he stayed up for a few hours and had a couple of beers with some friends. Brooks and others went to brunch Sunday morning, played 18 holes of golf that afternoon and then went to a dinner and silent auction to benefit the Hockey Hall of Fame. That night, Brooks and friends went for pizza about 9:30 p.m. and then reminisced for a couple of hours. On Monday morning, they returned to the golf course for a celebrity tournament to benefit the Hockey Hall of Fame. After 11 holes, Brooks left at about 11:50 a.m., saying he had to catch a plane. If Brooks did doze off while driving, investigators may never be able to prove it because he was alone in the van, said State Patrol Lt. Chuck Walerius. A report from the Anoka County coroner's office said Brooks wasn't wearing a seat belt and died of multiple blunt-force chest and abdominal injuries when he was ejected from his minivan. The report is preliminary, but the State Patrol said there are no indications that Brooks suffered any health problems or that he was traveling above the 70 mph speed limit before the crash. Walerius said it appears that Brooks could have survived if he had been wearing a seat belt. "You don't know what the extent of the injuries would have been, so it's tough to tell," Walerius said. "But I can say that there was room to live in that van. Would he have survived? Probably." Law enforcement officials said they hope to know within a couple of weeks what caused Brooks' minivan to spin out of control on the interstate. "There is a lot to be done," Department of Public Safety spokesman Kevin Smith said. Investigators began interviewing at least four witnesses Tuesday and experts in accident reconstruction were starting to piece together details, Smith said. "Our reconstructionists spent a great deal of time at the scene," he said. "They will try to figure out speed; they'll look through the vehicle." A cell phone was in the minivan, but Brooks wasn't talking on it at the time of the crash, Smith added. The van also is being checked for any mechanical defects. Police say the van veered right onto the grassy area, then rolled when Brooks apparently overcorrected his steering. He was found about 40 yards from the vehicle, dead at the scene. Police weren't aware of any pre-existing health problems, and there were no signs to indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash. "We came up to the body and saw he was still breathing at the time," said John Seeger, who was driving a few hundred yards behind Brooks' car when it veered off the road. Seeger told KSTP-TV that Brooks was unconscious the entire time. "You felt helpless, you really did," Seeger said. "But in the same sense, you wanted to try and do anything and everything you could for him." A wake for Brooks will be held beginning Friday afternoon at the Cathedral of St. Paul, the fourth-largest cathedral in the country. Normally, the church holds 2,800 people, but if extra chairs are brought in, up to 4,000 people could fit under its copper dome. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning. Church officials planned to meet with Brooks' family Wednesday to discuss who would be invited and other details. A memorial service also was being considered, but University of Minnesota officials said they wouldn't officially mark his passing until hockey season.

No, he threw 8.

Is Owner Mode as good as they made it appear?

Speaking of Antowain Smith, is he in any position to lose his starting job?

How can Brady be mentioned in the same breath as 4000 yard passers, if he has never thrown for 4000 yards in his career?

credit - ESPN.com BALTIMORE -- Maryland was placed on one year of probation by the NCAA on Monday because an assistant football coach committed a "major" violation by giving money to a high school recruit. The NCAA's infractions committee determined that coach Rod Sharpless gave heralded prospect Victor Abiamiri cash in amounts ranging from $5 to $200 five different times in order to gain an edge in the recruiting competition. Sharpless "formed a pattern of deliberate violations with a prospect of elite stature that spanned virtually the entire period the assistant coach was permitted to recruit the prospect under NCAA rules," according to a statement released by the NCAA. The committee found another coach gave a player a T-shirt and hat worth $20, a move the NCAA deemed a "secondary" infraction. But Maryland escaped serious punishment for the violations, largely because of actions the school took after the allegations arose. It forced Sharpless to resign and stopped recruiting both players involved, steps the NCAA called "commendable." Most punishments for major infractions involve at least two years of probation and often include a ban from postseason play or cuts in funding, said Thomas Yeager, chairman of the infractions committee. "A one-year probation is about as short as it gets," he said. Under the probation terms, Maryland will have to develop an educational program on NCAA rules and make periodic reports to the body that governs intercollegiate athletics. After it comes off the probation, which began Monday, any future infractions will be subject to NCAA repeat offender rules. "I think the NCAA recognizes that we have institutional control here," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "There was no effort to deceive the NCAA." The NCAA also accepted Maryland's agreement with Sharpless that he will not seek employment at an NCAA school for two football seasons. Sharpless allegedly gave Abiamiri cash to buy a a video game machine several days before Christmas. Yeager said Sharpless gave Abiamiri one payment of $200 after overhearing the prospect have a conversation with his mother about the video game system. Sharpless also allegedly left $100 in Abiamiri's basketball shoe to mark the student's birthday during a visit in mid-January. Other payments were small amounts, such as $5 or $10, Yeager said. Sharpless resigned in February after an internal investigation and Maryland stopped recruiting Abiamiri, who eventually signed with Notre Dame. Both Sharpless and Abiamiri acknowledged the payments occurred, Yeager said. No other football coaches were involved in the infraction. Maryland reported the results of its probe, conducted by an outside consultant, to the NCAA in hopes of staving off sanctions. Maryland officials met with NCAA officials June 13 to lobby for having the infraction involving Sharpless labeled "secondary." The NCAA ordered Al Seamonson, the coach who gave a player a hat and T-shirt, to donate $20 to charity. It also issued an official letter of reprimand that will remain in his personnel file for three years and froze his compensation package at its current level for fiscal years 2004 and 2005. ------ Does this sort of thing surprise anyone anymore?

Yeah, there are less than 10 teams, as a matter of fact, there are 8. The limit was 10, but only 8 joined. 3 people showed up for the live draft (I was one of the three) others preranked and had their picks autopicked. There were quite a few silly picks made throughout the draft, and some of the talented players fell to rounds even I couldn't believe they fell to. I'm gonna end up trading several of those guys as it is.

That disc sounds awesome. I might have to consider pre-ordering Rebel Strike now. I was gonna do that a while back, but I never got around to doing it.
-
That is true.
-
There is one slight problem, however. The "Can't Cut List" would kind of mess things up a bit, as there are certain players, whom cannot be cut. Has that been accepted?
-
I dunno... how do you think the players would hold up playing an 18-game schedule? Some of them don't hold up all that well, even with the current 16-game schedule. Honestly, I think they need to leave the current number of games as is, and maybe consider reducing the number of exhibition games.

ditto
-
I first started watching the game at 5:00 PM (Pacific time) Must've been the replay.
-
I pity you. Sort of.
-
This was on at 2:00 AM? This game was tape-delayed, wasn't it?
-
Fuck sake, this game is hard to find at the video stores, well mostly Hollywood Video.
-
I must have missed something then. I had never known, that he had played for Green Bay. And why was Frost converted to defense, anyway?
-
My vote, goes to Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis.
-
That kicked ass. Another game to look at would be Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War. It's a pretty sweet game, and you can play it on Xbox Live, I've never played it on that, but I did enjoy the single-player mode.
-
Must be a really good game then. I'll have to look for it again, tonight at Hollywood Video, when I take back NCAA Football 2004.
-
I believe it was released in 2001. Either way though, this guy waiting until now to file a lawsuit like this, is bullshit.

Since I got the webcast during the main event, can I get a quick results rundown on the previous matches?

I didn't think they'd have Brock drop the title so soon.
