WON News + Notes, January 22nd Issue
DrVenkman PhD replied to The Decemberists's topic in The WWE Folder
The Ken Patera thing reminded me of seeing part of "The Ken Patera Story" on Primetime on 24/7. They showed a jail cell door being closed and promised more of the story to follow. -
Helms was officially placed in the match on WWE.com, leaving one blank (either Super Crazy as previously mentioned, or perhaps changed to Marquis)

Reading this as I still wait for mine to arrive sometime this week, isn't the Maria thing what got Punk heat WrestleMania weekend? -
In fairness, they booked Mysterio to go from #9 to the final four just one year prior to 2006, so for kayfabe purposes you could argue he had some good experience built up. I generally don't have that built-up smark resentment towards HBK that some do, but my least favourite Rumble spot in history is when Superman Michaels eliminated Vader AND Yokozuna - at the SAME TIME - BY HIMSELF - in 1996. Several guys couldn't do it in 93, but Shawn could on his own in 96. Yeah, yeah, Vader and Yokozuna were in the middle of fighting each other... but still. I don't remember details, but I think the 10th anniversary of that spot was commemorated by HHH dumping two big guys all by himself in 2006. Moments I loved: 88-91: Don't know. I haven't seen the first two (I may have seen 89 and forgot about it) and, as I don't own a copy, have little memory of 90 or 91. I'm sure one of those early ones has Axe and Smash entering at the same time, and that's cool. Of course the Warrior/Hogan criss-cross from 1990. 92: Heenan on commentary. Bossman's self elimination, catching his throat on the rope (I'm sure he didn't love it, but I found it funny), and of course, Flair being Flair. 93: Backlund going the distance, Jerry Lawler and Ric Flair going at it for no apparent WWE kayfabe reason, Macho Man dropping the elbow on Yokozuna (then being retarded and trying to pin him). Virgil and DiBiase fighting as well as Martel and Santana with Gorilla and Heenan acknowledging past feuding was a nice touch, but it's otherwise a dull match. 94: Diesel's eliminations. 95: I loved this when I was 13, don't recall much to love about it now. 96: The debut of music for all 30 entrants, Shawn and Marty fighting, all clique members being eliminated by each other. 97: Haven't seen it in a decade, but I recall Austin being awesome. 98: 3 Faces of Foley (good thing he got eliminated prior to needing to re-enter, eh?). Austin and Rock as the last two. 99: Nothing 00: Too Cool dancing (hey, it was big stuff 7 years ago!), Taka's big bump, Bob Backlund. 01: The way it was divided up (midcard session with the Hardyz, Drew Carey / Hardcore session, main eventer session) 02: Mr. Perfect, hands down. Spitting his gum while on the verge of elimination was classic. The Hardyz reunion to battle Undertaker was nice. 03: Matt Hardy and Shannon Moore's antics. And while it was essentially the same spot repeated twice, I loved it when Christian tried to team with Edge and Matt with Jeff. Notable for being the first "Raw vs SmackDown" Rumble so some oof the in-ring match-ups were pretty fresh. Rey and Edge mistiming their missile dropkicks on Nowinski is pretty sick. 04: Benoit winning, Foley attacking longtime rival (in terms of someone being at the BUTT of his jokes) Test to earn a spot in the Rumble to get Orton - didn't see that one coming. Nunzio's antics and Goldberg's spear on Nunzio later were cool moments as well. 05: Some good action, but sadly my favourite part has nothing to do with the wrestling ("OU REVIOUR!" call by JR when Haas is eliminated). WGTT's breif reuniting to deliver their double team move was good. 06: I don't remember a lot of moments as I have only seen it twice. I'm sure I laughed at some jobbers being eliminated (Simon Dean?) though.

I like it when there is a short video clip of something before the program you watch. One of these (probably in September) showed The Headbangers in 1995 in SMW. This was cool as I didn't realize they existed pre-WWE.

The OAO Raw Thread for 22/01/07

Khali going nuts and eliminating a bunch of people while the crowd went wild, followed by no selling Cena's airborne attack, was television I really enjoyed. I felt bad about enjoying that, but I think they might have something with Khali as a novelty act face in the future. -
I hate cheaters By Elijah Burke Written: January 19, 2007 In this new ECW.com exclusive feature, Elijah Burke shares with you a unique experience, the "Elijah Experience." Be sure to check back each week for the latest entry from Elijah. Is it me, or does it seems that the rules to a man-to-man fight have somehow changed? Actually, the rules haven't changed; it's been unfair for quite awhile, which is why in this edition of the Experience, YOUR host of hosts and YOUR guiding light is here to shine some light on this issue. Now, since many of you have probably never been in a fight (and if you were, you'd more than likely got your BUTT kicked), I'll use an example of something that you all can relate to: cartoons. First, let’s take a look at one of the greatest cartoon feuds of all time: Popeye vs. Bluto! There you have two men who believed that somehow a stick creature named Olive Oyl was the most beautiful woman they've ever seen (personally, I thought the Sea Hag looked much better). Being the men that they were, they would often fight for Olive Oyl's affection. In the end, after eating spinach that gives him superhuman strength ("advantage"), Popeye always defeated Bluto. Then there's He-Man vs. Skeletor. You have the good 'ol pretty boy savior of Castle Grayskull vs. the crafty sorcerer. Let’s face it, if you're going to a swordfight then bring a sword. But why bring a sword full of magic power that gives you a decisive "advantage" in what is supposed to be a man-to-man fight? Where's the respect for the elderly? Skeletor had to be at least eight centuries old, but you all cheered He-Man as he beat, battered and disrespected a senior citizen. Last but not least (and this one really ticks me off), Road Runner vs. Wile E. Coyote. Nuff said! Do you see the trend here? I'm sure all of you lower life morons cheer for whom you perceive to be the "good guys" during these classic feuds, but they're actually not good at all. They're all cheaters who needed an advantage to win. I HATE cheaters, including your real-life Popeye/He-Man, the ECW icon Sandman. Sandman is no different from any of the above mentioned "good guys." Good guys are supposed to overcome the odds, not create them. Here's a guy that always wants to fight, but doesn’t believe in fighting fair. Why bring a Singapore Cane to a fistfight? I know why; to have an "advantage." All of you support this drunk as he staggers through the crowd and into the ring, where he places the very existence of humanity in danger. Cane or no cane, Sandman can't measure up to the Elijah Experience and he knows that. Sandman is a cheater who fears YOUR "Paragon of Virtue" and knows that he's one experience away from being knocked completely sober… forever! Editor’s note: Don't agree with me? Send me your thoughts, comments and questions to [email protected]. Next week, in this column, YOUR “Paragon of Virtue” responds publicly to your emails!

Edge needs a match that he'll win - I want his streak to continue, but I'm sure it will have to end. I'm hearing a lot of noise about Helms and Crazy being in the Rumble (I didn't pay much attention to the graphic last night), but at last check WWE.com only added Khali with two spots open.

Hooray for Lashley being in an Extreme Rules match today. Picking all 3 champs was too expensive, so I kept Lashley on the basis the title match at the Rumble could become extreme, but even if it doesn't he has one tonight.

http://www.wwe.com/shows/royalrumble/exclusives/rrecs "Don’t: Try to pin someone Dear Mr. Savage circa 1993, do you see a ref in the ring? Neither do we. Maybe that’s because the Royal Rumble Match is an OVER-THE-TOP-ROPE Battle Royal, silly. Next time you’re in the Royal Rumble you better study up on the rules, but don’t worry, it’s probably going to be a while."

I was thinking last night that despite multiple complaints from the folks here about how stale Edge/Cena became in 2006, every match they had ended up being better than the last and it would truthfully be a good main event for Mania. I still want HBK in there, though.

I'm glad you and Scroby understood the question because I had no idea what was being asked. "They" was rather vague.

The OAO Raw Thread for 22/01/07

Under the apparent new policy of closing threads about TV shows, let's hope this one survives. I don't know what we'd do without a 9 page thread of people saying "this sucks" or variants of it. -
I don't think video packages count, so you might be safe with Trips. Terry Funk, Steve Austin (for now), Roddy Piper and Stevie Richards are probably good picks.
-
Well that's what it says on wikipedia (complete with "citation needed" note) so I take it as truth.
-
That's pretty easy. Just pick no one.

Just Too Gangsta

My team is terribly expensive and only has 7 guys which will probably hurt - $5M for Shawn or Taker winning the Rumble could probably be better spent on people who aren't winning but will get specialty match points. I might revamp it, but I might just decide "this week is too hard", as it has 3 known title matches and 3 known specialty matches.

Make sure you're doing the in-between moves. Pretty much all they do is jog in place, which I tried to do as well. Game & Watch cameo was surprising. Loved the Star Fox boss stage. EDIT: I did it! I don't know how but I did. This game doesn't seem to be intended for use with the wriststrap. Yeah, EGM noted in their review of the game that a lot of the controller positions the game has are impossible if you follow Nintendo's wrist strap policy.
-
No clue, probably something in-house would be my guess though.

I think you just answered your own question. Wasn't this essentially what happened 2 years ago with Cena and Batista accidentally going over the top and screwing up the planned finish of the match? I don't remember hearing that. My recollection was that the restart was supposed last for a few minutes, but they were running so long on time that Batista just desrtoyed Cena and threw him out after about 30 seconds. I also recall the story going around that there was problems with the ending, but most reports I heard were of the "it only went 30 seconds" variety. I later read in a book (World Wrestling Insanity, I think, and I assume the author whose name I am forgetting was reading some sort of newsletter) that the double elimination was not supposed to happen, which is why Vince stormed out there in a huff and tore his quads.

I posted that Donahue video last week but it went ignored. Oh well. Anyway, in honour of the Royal Rumble coming up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USebPxcsUyg There's gonna be a Rumble tonight! There's gonna be a Rumble, that's right!

AndrewTS Bob Barron Dames Rudo HTQ Anglesault Leena - if only for her efforts to make everything in 2006 revolve around her when people should just move on (not intended as flamebait or anything like that, just saying...) Scott Keith Marvin Czech

I hate rap, yet love that song. Interesting.

I was watching SummerSlam 2004 earlier (with a lot of FFing going on) - did RVD piss someone off that summer and I forgot about it? I seemed to block the fact he wrestled an epic bout against Dupree on Heat. Then again, Batista vs Maven was the Heat match before Bad Blood that year. I also found it amusing that, only 2.5 years later, only one of the Divas from the dodgeball game is still in the WWE (Victoria) while TWO members of the Diva Search team (McCool and Maria) have jobs despite losing the search. Maybe that's just me, though.
