You obviously have no knowledge of contract lengths or baseball at all
First off A-Rod's contract isn't going to end until 2010 unless he opts out, which is highly unlikely. Second off when he is traded here he's going to restructure his contract a tad...Gene "The Grinch" Orza will allow $13-15mill to be moved around. When A-Rod gets here he'll be staying here.
Manny stated he wanted to play for the Yankees, which is not only another team but the hated rival of the team he is playing for...he should be told to go to hell.
Nomar's agent is asking for $17mill a year and with the market correction he's not worth it. Now you'll say "So A-Rod is worth $25mill?!" but basically where taking on A-Rod to get rid of Manny whom also has a bad contract. Tom Hicks is slowly caving in as he has already dropped $10mill off his demands...only a matter of time.
Man i'm usually with you on all things New England but this is the most naieve post I have seen yet. You spend way too much time at the ESPN Red Sox board.
The deal fell through because the Sox didnt want to send 5 million per year to pay for Manny's contract. They wanted to restructure A-Rod's deal to get that 5 million per year extra and essentially have A-Rod pay for Manny's contracr in a roundabout way. Of course this was laughed at and rejected by the MLBPA because it wasn't monetarily benefiting A-Rod. Funny thing is the Sox knew this was going to happen so the real reason was to show Hicks that they were trying to do the deal when they had no real intention of doing it unless they dropped their demands of the 5 mil per year for manny.
Manny Ramirez stated that he would like to play for the team he grew up cheering for. He said this for future pland AFTER his term with Boston ended. Then, of course, when the Sox put him on waivers he said he wanted to go to NY. I got news for you bro. If I was playing for the Giants, and I was born in LA, and the Giants put me on waivers(assuming I am the same type of player in the same contract situation as manny that is) I would say I wanted to play for my home team too since the Giants didnt want to pay my contract anymore. I'm sick and tired of hearing how Manny is a cancer to Boston and he hates being here. The guy does nothing but put up numbers and anchor's the best offense in baseball and he is criticized for every little stupid insignificant thing he does by the relentlessly negative Boston media. I could give a rats ass if he wants to have a few drinks with his friend Enrique Wilson after missing a game because he was sick. I could care less if he refused to Pinch Hit in a close game(which they won) because he said he wasnt feeling good...for all I know he knew that he coulnt perform to the best of his ability at that point. I don't care if he someday wants to play for out "Bitter Rival". He is arguably the best pure hitter in the god damn league right now and people(media) want to run him out of town because they hear the name "A-Rod".
Boston fans need to remember what Nomar has meant to this team for the last 7 years and show some common sense knowing that the guy, being the second best player at his position, is obviously going to ask for a longer contract extention guaraunteeing that he finishes his career as a Red Sox. How does anyone not understand that he rejected the 4 year 60 mil deal because he wants, and DESERVES a longer extention than 4 years for everythig he does for this team.
I know this deal is probably not happening and i'm thankful that it isn't. Nomar and John Henry are professionals, and if they can come to terms on a deal before this season, or after this season, then it's all good and fine. If they cannot come to terms then nomar will go to another team, which would be a shame, yet would be good for Theo and Co. since his long term goal is to re-build the farm system with players HE chooses. Nomar walking away would give Theo more draft picks to do that with while also giving Boston some payroll flexibility to allow for the re-signing of Jason Varitek, Trot Nixon, and Derek Lowe to name a few.
Right now as far as I am concerned the team is almost done with dealing for the most part for 2004. They have the exact core lineup as last year sans Todd Walker(replaced by Bellhorn and Reese), and have added one of the better workhorse pitchers(Shilling) and a Closer who has been very steady and successful the past few years. Not to mention a manager that probably(hopefully) knows what to do. It makes perfect sense for Boston to keep Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra(even if only for one last year) and there is NO urgency to break it up. IF they get the deal THEY want from Texas they will probably do it, but it will be on the Red Sox' terms, not Texas'.
