The last week of the NFL season.

That's one of most hilarious sports analogies I've ever read, especially since I am definitely not an eli Manning fan. Props to the Pats for going 16-0, I may never see that done again in my lifetime. On another note, the real season starts next week in the playoffs and the AFC is not going to be an easy road for New England to navigate. Joseph Addai could definitely give New England problems in the AFC title game if the Colts get there as the outdoor weather should reign in some of New England's passing attack (albeit not all of it). Hell, I think even Jacksonville could give New England some trouble in the divisional round.

    TSM Person of the year

1: Who is your opinion is the biggest news grabber of 2007? The 2008 presidential election. The campaign started near the beginning of 2007 and just kept going on to the point all Americans just wish it was over with. 2: What was the biggest story for the year? The arrival of the burst of the housing market and the burst of the credit bubble. It dominated the summer's headlines and has continued to dominate the fall news spilling into a political issue. 3: What was the story with too much mainstream attention? Don Imus's comments concerning the Rutger's women's basketball team. Were they bad? Absolutley and he should've been reprimanded and served a suspension. However, to be fired in light of them, especially when the all the "outrage" built up several days later, was ridiculous. At least we can be glad they didn't lead to a huge clampdown on freedom of speech on the airwaves. 4: What was the story with the least amount of mainstream attention that deserve much more? The defeat of Hugo Chavez at the polls in Venezuela to rewrite the Constitution and consolidate political power. I could say the same for nearly every OTHER international story in U.S. news but the MSM always ignores these things until they become chaotic.

How did you find out that wrestling was not "real"?

My parents tried to get me to not like wrestling and told me it was fake but as a seven year old at the time I thought they were being dumb. Other people at school also loved to ridicule those of us who were wrestling fans (this was in early 1995, years before the boom period when wrestling got "cool" and suddenly those same people who once ridiculed were talking about it) and told us it was fake and stupid. However, I really didn't "get" that it wasn't real until I saw a MTV special on going to wrestling school that featured Les Thatcher. It may not have been that exact show but I saw something on TV a year or so later that exposed the business to me, although it would take until 1999 with WOW Magazine for me to start getting the "smart mark" terminology such as workrate, face/heel (instead of the regular good guy/bad guy), pop, overness, blading, etc. To be honest, now that I am a "smart" fan I don't think I am as creative with wrestling. I used to come up with great storylines in my head and use them for the N64 video games or the action figures I had but now when playing TEW and stuff I can't seem to come up with much of anything useful. It's like I'm trying too hard or something.

Felt good to FINALLY get a win this week. Maybe I can get a feel good win next week as well to close out the season with a less than impressive 5-12 in comparison to last year's 11-8 campaign.

Yes, I have seen those predictions but consider some of them to be a bit extreme although a financial crisis in an age where our currency is fiated and not backed by gold anymore is scary on many levels. The place where the crisis is at its worst is in the banking sector because investors are fearing how much the mortgage meltdown has affected banks are unwilling to provide them with additional capital. There is a major economic correction due, that is apparent and the next administration will be forced to handle that. However, it would be helpful if the U.S. Congress and the President would actually balance the budget like every normal American has to do in their home. A major problem is all of the entitlement programs are championed by the left and the all the defense programs are championed by the right with everyone thinking they have a "right" to the spending in the budget. I am hoping that the end result of this credit crunch is a correction of the way financial systems operate but also some serious cutbacks in our nation's budget of things we cannot afford. Will that be painful? Absolutley but someone has to stand up and make the cuts. Unfortunately, though, I don't forsee any politicians who are bold enough to do that as we now have polticians championing more intervention that would harm the marketplace (such as limiting home foreclosures) or championing protectionism (which also played a role in worsening the Great Depression).

Well after reading Mrs. Clinton's comments I think what she is hitting around is making Americans pay MORE for energy so we can switch to alternatives. Her comments indicate that low prices are bad for getting off of oil (and I could see the economics of that) but it seems as if she has a plan on the backburner for increasing the gas tax or planning an individual "carbon tax" to pay for alternative energy research/production. While using a carbon tax makes economic sense I doubt that it would be politically popular and may even be a bit misguided depending on who is supposed to supervise that this money actually goes to alternative energy which surprise, surprise is the U.S. Congress who waste billions of taxpayer dollars a year regardless of which party is in control. The problem I'm most worried about on the horizon isn't healthcare, Iraq, or even energy. Instead, I'm worried about this credit crunch and the negative impacts it could have on the global economy.

Lakota Indians secede from the United States

Well I can definitely see that viewpoint. The problems on Native American reservations are immense with high rates of depression, suicide, poor education and health care systems, and a lack of jobs. I'd also agree that people have an overexaggerated viewpoint of how much money some tribes make off of casinos. I remember reading a Los Angeles Times article two years ago and it described how there are factions within tribes that put a stranglehold on the casino business and prevent other factions from opening their own casinos or don't give other factions their fair share of casino revenues.

So Fire Pro R is back

Question: When playing tag team matches why do your partners intervene sometimes and sometimes they don't? For example, I was playing a Survivor Series 8-man tag last night and everytime I got the CPU in a submission all 3 of his partners would run in and beat the crap out of me for like 5 seconds but my guys would hardly do that. Also, when I was in a submission many of them sat on the ring apron and did nothing most of the time. Is there some kind of "trigger" mechanism I need to be doing to get them to intervene or is that just based on their CPU logic?

So Fire Pro R is back

Well I wouldn't have much to give you right now outside of the two logos and renamed roster. I haven't dabbled with the CAW function much as I'm waiting for some X-Mas money to come in for a MAX Drive to get some guys into the game (mostly from the 1988 save someone has at the fireproclub website). Some guy also seems to have a 1998 WCW save he's working on over at fireproclub with a prelim video on youtube but the pack hasn't been released yet. Making the logos pixel by pixel is time consuming (took me two days to make the KOTR one--its old school, think the 1995 logo but it looks spot on) and the Rumble one took about 4-5 hours. I'm going to put together a WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series logo if I have time in the near future (I have the pics, just need to do them) with X-Mas approaching and doing some prelim planning for student teaching. For the last logo slot I may do a In Your House or a generic WWF mat logo. I kinda wish there were more than just 6 logo spots, though. When I get a MAX Drive I wouldn't have any problem uploading those logos on this site or putting them on a website and linking you guys to it.

Smues is right on target with what I was going to say in this thread. Heck, I'm happy they are seceding because that's more government savings we're going to have. I got a kick out of EHME's story too, especially due to the picture he has attached to his posts that I could almost visualize was having the discussion.

So Fire Pro R is back

Yea, I was angry that Amazon slashed the price of the game to $7.99 from $14.99 just two days after I received my copy. Still, it's a bargain for a entertaining wrestling game. I've made two good logos so far: a King of the Ring one and a Royal Rumble one. I'll get the Max Drive eventually for the old school wrestlers.

Looks like part of my speculation on how McCain's candidacy may not be dead may be coming to fruition... http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNew...=22&sp=true However, McCain is under criticism for favoring a special interest group (GASP!) in crafting legislation. Looks like he's got his fighting gloves on, though, and is viciously denying the charges contrary to him not saying much when the Bush smear campaign targeted him in South Carolina in 2000.

    This week in the NBA

Yea. It's not a great time for the Jazz right now. We've lost eight of our last nine games and lost seven consecutive road games to fall to 14-13. While Giricek's play has never impressed me (he just had two points last night with limited time I believe), we really can't afford to be pissing players off or throwing them out of games when Okur and Harpring aren't playing.

    What are you watching?

Yea, I watched that show again not to long ago and it is quite sad how many people on the show are no longer with us. It's one of my favorite pay-per-views from 1995, though, as the Bodydonnas-Underdogs match to start the show is pretty cool, the Bret Hart-Diesel match is great, and I'm a HUGE mark for the Wild Card match. I'm surprised the WWE has never resurrected that concept because I loved it as a kid and still love it today.

    4,000 dead Americans

Wait a second. There were MULTIPLE goals behind the troop surge. Yes, many were political but other goals involved in the stated troop surge when it was announced was to create a peaceful environment that would establish joint security stations in Baghdad (which has been met), establish more trained Iraqi forces for protecting Baghdad (which has been met), and clamp down on all religious militias who are still in violence against Allied forces (which is also being met). This is not a "shifting of the goal posts", this is an evaluation of where we have come since the surge began and nothing more. Now, I agree that without political progress our situation in Iraq is untenable and that is why I am leaning towards saying "screw it" and leaving. The Shiites and Sunnis who are in government do not seem to want to reconcile with each other with Shiites not willing to share power with Sunnis or share oil revenue and the Sunnis simply not believing that they are a minority in the new political calculus in Iraq. Also, it's not as if the Nuri al-Maliki government is doing a damn thing to help us. Part of me just leans towards getting out and just letting these guys duke it out on their own turf but the problem is that leaves us in a major PR disaster that will allow terrorists to claim yet another victory over U.S. forces. Either way, we're going to lose in some respect unless the people elected to Iraqi's government are willing to take the reigns of their country and make the necessary compromises.

Matches You Wish You Still Had On Tape

Basically my pay-per-view telecast copy of WrestleMania VII. It had the unclipped Savage-Warrior match and unclipped edits of all the other matches. Considering that I'm a mark for early 1990s WWF (especially 1991) I loved getting this tape from my cousin as a kid (he gave me his ppv telecast copy of Royal Rumble 1991 as well). I lost the WM 7 tape, though, when my VCR went crazy and ate it up. I'm still pissed about that incident to this day. On a side note, I'd pay good money to get full seasons of RAW from 1993-1997 (with an emphasis on 1995 since that is the first year I started watching wrestling on a consistent basis. I remember my first ever RAW match was The Blu Brothers vs. The Headshrinkers).

    The College Football Thread 12/20 - 12/30

Yea, no kidding. I can't be surprised with Florida State, though. At least they've downgraded to academic cheating from being the "shoplifting university" of college football. Actually, academic problems have been a hallmark of Papa Bowden's run there. In particular, there's the infamous case of Deion Sanders, who didn't go to any of his fall semester classes or exams in 1988, as he knew he was going to the NFL after bowl season. The embarrassment of that revelation in the late 80s made Florida State put the "Deion Sanders rule" on the books about athletes attending classes and exams. (There's a debate on whether Deion would even be covered under the Deion Sanders rule, as he was a walk-on for FSU instead of a scholarship player because he was already under a baseball contract with the Yankees.) I forgot the "Deion Sanders rule." I started watching college football in the mid-1990s when all the Seminole players seemingly got busted for shoplifting (some at UK got busted too interestingly enough...must've been a 90s fad) so the Deion issue passed me by, although a friend told of me of it the other day before I saw your post when we were discussing the upcoming game. Shouldn't the NCAA be issuing stiffer punishment that this, though? I mean I know its Bowden and all but up to TWENTY-FIVE players?!?! You've gotta be kidding me. However, I think betting on Florida State isn't that bad of a proposition. As much as I like UK, I've always found it hard to find confidence in the football program because when we get breaks (such as just having to kick a FG to finally beat Tennessee this year in the second OT or the Bluegrass miracle five years ago) we always seem to screw up.

Vladimir Putin. Man of the Year.

Well to be fair to Patraeus, he has managed to turn the situation on the ground in a more positive direction than it was under several commanders before him. The problem is that all of the people that came before him have created such a mess in terms of the deBaathification process, Saddam's trial, prisoner abuse, not building enough infrastructure, pissing off local clerics, isolating Sunnis and being seen as agents of Shiites, etc. that the situation is going to take a long time to clean it up. It looks as if we've found the right guy for the job but finding him took too damn long and now the public's patience with this war effort is done. I laughed back during Bush's first term when he said he could trust Putin. Putin had already begun to erode democratic checks in Russia towards the end of the Clinton administration and had launched major government attacks on independent media outlets. Also, when the West was basically mum about Putin's attacks on Yukos back in 2003-2004 I knew that was a bad call. I find that our government has a very poor understanding of the situation that is occuring in Moscow right now and it may not be a bad idea to get more intelligence analysts/intelligence field agents in there.

    4,000 dead Americans

Well the surge has managed to reduce violence in Iraq and thus far it looks like Patraeus's other moves towards having troops talk to clerics in the field and engage the Sunnis in a more positive manner are reaping benefits. Granted, when the surge goes away it will be interesting to see if these conditions remain the same or if insurgent groups who have remained dormant start blasting away again but thus far sectarian deaths are down in all of Iraq and so are sectarian deaths in Baghdad. Furthermore, attacks on troops in Iraqi provinces is down as of last month. This isn't to say the situation is peachy but the situation has improved to the point where the war in Iraq is starting to lose some of its appeal as a 2008 election issue. In this environment, I can see why the Dems aren't trying to cut off funds because they don't want to be viewed as styming a surge that is being portrayed for the most part as effective in some respects. Aside from that, though, Democrats really didn't show me much on the war in this first year. If you tell voters that your ending the war and they vote you into office based on that principle then you had better end it and they haven't done that. I watched the debate over the bill on C-SPAN and it was rather pathetic. The Republicans have unity on the issue while the Democrats look weak and fractured on it which serves to undermine their position on national security (because they are so split on the matter that it's hard to find a clear position). I also think Democratic opposition could be due to their part of their majority resting on winning conservative districts in the last election cycle and those politicans are not buying into the "end the war now" strategy Pelosi and other party strategists might want.
