The OAO Post-SummerSlam RAW for 8/21/06

Was McMahons-DX really blown off last night? I thought Meltzer said that its not quite over with yet. THIS has to be the worst feud of the year and the worst feud in a really long time. It just never ends when logic would dictate that last night should have been the blow off for good. Same could be said for Cena-Edge and it seems that at least on RAW the booking has been on cruise control for the entire year.
  2. I still love 1998 WWF. Lots of good memories from that year with the AWESOME hype for SummerSlam 1998 (I still remember the Highway to Hell video package) and the great Dude Love-Austin match which is very underrated from Over the Edge 1998. Of course looking back none of that stuff is shocking now since they have beaten nearly every angle they once used to death but I remember back in those days I couldn't wait to tune into Raw. Nowadays its just a chore to sit through.

The OAO Post-SummerSlam RAW for 8/21/06

This isn't the 1980's and 90's anymore my friend.
  4. I think Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna is overlooked from WM IX b/c of the Hogan debacle that occurred right after it but Bret works a very good "big man vs. small man" matchup by tieing Yokozuna in the ropes and unloading. One of Yokozuna's best matches right up there with his SummerSlam 1993 match with Luger which is my favorite of his. Also, Slaughter vs. Hogan at WM 7 is a very good old school brawl that was much better than a lot of people were predicting. Even if the finish wasn't in doubt Hogan does a good bladejob which adds to the match.

    Middle East Tensions Exploding

Why don't we just organize a large "hitman squad" within the CIA to go after these people? And I'm not talking about the terrorists. I'm talking about their families. These idiots don't care if they die so let's start going after people they might actually give a crap about. This is what the Russian KGB threatened to do when one of its diplomats was abducted in Lebanon in the 1980s and surprise, surprise the guy was returned within several days of that proclamation. Sure, it sounds crazy and I'm not sure I would 100% condone it but if these people don't seem to care about life then we need to start taking extreme measures to eliminate them. I for one do not want to live under sharia law and the fact that these leftist rallies call George W. Bush the biggest terrorist in the world is absolutley ludicrous. By the way, where are all the feminists on this issue? You'd think they would give Bush some credit since he's liberated millions of women in Afghanistan by getting rid of the oppressive Taliban regime and since an Islamic regime would cover them up in 100 layers of clothing and take away any freedoms they have. Oh yea...they aren't going to support him because the right to an abortion is more important than a poor girl in Afghanistan getting an education and having to get married when they are like 5 years old to 60 year old men. Got it. As far as Iran goes I say we need to do everything we can to sanction their ass. They can use the oil weapon all they want but I think the world could survive by having 5% of its oil reserves depleted better than Iran could survive with a 100% loss of oil revenue. It would totally collapse their government and would provide an opportunity for reformers to depose the Guardian Council and institue democracy without our interference.

So your response to a terror attack would be to do nothing because fighting the terrorists is what they want?

The answer is never unless the WWE suddenly gets some effective competition which isn't happening anytime soon. It's a simple case of the WWE wanting Orton to be awesome and the fans not buying it so to show their utter disgust at the fans reaction they will keep shoving Orton down our throats until we accept him and the longer we resist the worse it will get.

Couldn't agree with you more. As people have echoed over the last few weeks, I feel like I've been in the Twilight Zone this summer where hardly anything on RAW changes. I feel that watching this summer has been a complete waste of time because we still have Edge/Cena, we still have DX/McMahons (which stems from the original HBK-McMahon issues that should've died @ WM), and the constant rotating of the IC title belt in matches that don't mean a damn thing because people in the back are too concerned over the next Diva or the "funny" DX-McMahon feud. I wonder if the buyrate for this pay-per-view takes a nosedive how Hogan will politic and spin that one.

Well no SummerSlam buy for me. I don't find a single match on this card appealing. Just pathetic for what is supposed to be one of the biggest PPV's of the year.

    OAO Raw Thread - August/14th/2006.

Just got back from one tonight..decent show but nothing spectacular. For $25 its not that bad though, especially if you get good seats like I got (5th row on the entrance aisle). For $25, you can go to better wrestling shows near by Glens Falls. Yea...but those shows don't involve "WWE Superstars". I can't understand the reasoning for turning down house shows, or any WWE events, especially if it's as cheap as 25$. The thinking may be different for those that completely despise wrestling I guess (Well, WWE), but I would think, if there's even the slightest wrestling fan in you, that there's no reason to turn down a WWE event. Because no matter how bad the guys are, I would think that live, it'd be more exciting then 'random indy show' with good wrestling. But that's just me. We are obviously not looking at the same Trish. Not really. WWE house shows are pretty generic and boring unless it's a special event and they pretty much work in a recycled format and the effort from the talent reflects that. I enjoyed myself at the WWE house show that came to Lexington, KY last July to be honest much more than the TV product. The first half of the show sucked but after intermission we got a 20 minute Carlito-Shelton match was wasn't too bad when it got going, a fun HBK-Flair match that went 14 minutes, and then the first ever John Cena-HHH contest that went nearly 20 minutes (if not more). It was funny watching WM 22 the other day because they did the "backdrop out of the Pedigree followed by the FU" spot that won the match for Cena @ Rupp and that probably would've been the Mania finish if the STFU never came along. Plus, that was one of the very last shows Earl Hebner ever worked for WWE since he got fired several days later for those T-Shirts.
  12. Lieberman's challenge in this race will be to have a more lively campaign. He was very lackluster against Lamont in the primary either because he didn't take the challenge seriously or figured that in the end he was going to win. Joe isn't a very enthusastic person so that could play against him but I think the debate between these two (a rematch debate if you will) is going to be absolutley critical b/c either the "war on terrorism" philosophy or the "war in Iraq" philosophy will come out the winner. If war on terror wins then Lieberman wins BUT if Lamont wins the Iraq card then it's pretty much game-set-match because Lieberman is going to be tied up in tons of knots if that issue becomes the dominant one in this race. Lieberman also needs to use his depth on issues to school Lamont if at all possible. I'm not talking going ultra-negative but he needs to pick apart Lamont's campaign speeches bit by bit. For example, when asked about his stance on Iran Lamont said that the U.S. should ignore Bush's course and work with our allies and use a "carrots and sticks" approach that is well balanced. Sounds good BUT the only problem is that Bush has basically done that by allowing the EU-3 to work with Iran in negotiations and used the UN Security Council to issue a resolution against Iran. Also, we've been using carrots with Iran like with North Korea until they are coming out of our ears. Basically, Lieberman needs to win the TRUST factor and make people a bit hesitant to vote for Lamont based on a fear of what they might get (and I'm not talking the fear of "the terrorists are coming...hey they ate with Ned Lamont last night for dinner I saw it with my own eyes!" crap). He needs to use his experience as a critical factor to show that he knows all of the angles and understands the issues better.

I think the big winner politically is going to be Likud. They had no influence on this war planning and aren't tarred like Kadmina with Olmert or Labor with Peretz. My prediction is that the fallout from this may see a crumbling of the Kadima-Labor partnership within the next year or so (probably b/c Labor might feel that its political advantageous to challenge Olmert and therefore break the coalition) which could usher Likud's hard liners into power and Benyamin Netanyahu returns to power for the first time in over a decade. As a sidenote, I remain a bit confused about the whole Iran nuclear deal. Are inspectors still permitted to check out facilities or did Iran kick them out? Might sound like a dumb question but somehow I can't recall. If someone knows the answer it'd be appreciated.

Soooo...if they get rid of Khali because he obviously can't work and is a danger to anyone he steps into the ring with, WHY did they job Mysterio out to him several months ago?
  15. That's a pretty risky strategy, though, because Independent voters may not like Lamont going negative like that (but it depends on how he handles it) and basically telling followers "hey look some GOP people are voting for Lieberman so he MUST be a right-wing insurgent!" Who knows, some of those GOP voters might not like Bush and are throwing their support behind Lieberman because his entry into this race actually makes it competitive and Schlesinger is such a lousy candidate in the first place. What I'm trying to say is that if Lamont isn't careful he could alienate a lot of voters or tick off a lot more GOP voters to vote for Lieberman because you can't try to paint other voters as stupid or that you don't need their support. As an example look to Cythnia McKinney's race against Hank Johnson in Georgia where she said he was getting GOP money and she didn't need to work with the GOP. It made her appear as if she was extremely partisan which turned off a large segment of her party vote and she lost.

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

It still baffles me why we had HHH-Jericho as the last match on the WrestleMania X8 card instead of Hogan-Rock. Did they really think Rock-Hogan wouldn't draw as much heat as it did?

The STFU just makes me sick. There is really no setup and I just got done watching WM 22 and its so embarassing as Cena has HHH in the STFU and it doesn't really look painful. All Cena does to make it seem like he's doing more than lightly draping his arms around HHH's head is going "AHHHHHH! AHHHHH!!!!" Just lame.
  18. Recent Rasmussen poll shows the following: Lieberman (I): 46% Lamont (D): 41% Schlesinger ®: 6% See it here

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

Yea, in all fairness to Shango he or someone in the WWF brass probably mistimed how long it was going to take to get to the ring because that WM 8 walkway was pretty long. I miss the long walkways to be honest.
  20. I just think Lieberman is going on the offensive because during the primary campaign he was way too subdued. Plus, I guess he's banking on getting lots of GOP votes in this primary since he figures a lot of Democrats might back Lamont.

In Varsity I've always found Cover 2 out of the Nickel formation, Covers out of the Dime Formation, and Cover 4 out of the Dime 3-4-6 or whatever formation to work really effectively against the pass. I use multiple D as my defensive playbook because I like being able to run combinations of the 4-3, 3-4, Nickel, Dime, and Quarter when I need to. In order to stop the short pass these formations work well for that because you've got someone playing zone on each of the corners so when they try screens there is usually someone who can run up and attempt a quick INT or be there to tackle them. You could also try taking control of a LB and patrolling one side of the field to make sure screens are minimized if it is a passing play. I asked a question about pass defense earlier in this thread around page 10 or 11 so you might want to check back there for people's responses to my posts. On a note about season 2 of my dynasty, I got some really good defensive players in the offseason and my RB's attributes went up some 8 points to a 94. Had my first game against #7 Louisville and won 34-0 and it got me on the cover of ESPN Magazine. That was pretty neat and it got me another contract goal so it looks like season 2 will be much better than season 1 but no surprise there b/c with UK there was no place to go but up.

Yea, I have never been a big fan of Burke's matches in OVW. They all seem to devolve into punch and kick contests.

Well my season ended up on a high note as I defeated Vanderbilt 27-21, WKU 47-15, and then had a wild one at Tennessee. I was trailing 15-13 with two seconds left after the kick return so I called a hail mary with 5 receivers of course. I don't know what defense Tennessee was playing but on the left side of the field I had two receivers against one defender so I moved my quarterback over to the left side and heaved a huge one toward them. The #87 receiver who was supposed to catch the ball jumps for it as well as the Tennessee defender but the ball goes over both of their heads and I'm thinking I've lost when SUDDENLY my #12 receiver comes out of nowhere, grabs the ball a second before it hits the ground, and runs 25 yards into the end zone for the game winning touchdown. The only part that made me disappointed is that there was no pile up in the end zone or they didn't throw any gatorade on me or carry me off the field or anything. Either way, the 19-15 win fulfilled a contract goal and got me in good graces with the administration again after a 5-7 season. West Virginia got screwed in the BCS in my first year and Alabama got to play for the national title even though they were #3 in the polls vs. #1 Oklahoma by four HUNDRETHS of a point. However, West Virginia lost their bowl game in a blowout to Maryland so I watched the National title game. Alabama got out to a 14-0 lead with :45 seconds left in the second quarter until Oklahoma marched down the field and kicked a field goal in to make it 14-3. Oklahoma stopped Alabama after a kickoff and kicks another field goal to make it 14-6. Alabama gets stopped yet again on 3rd & 7 and their QB gets knocked out of the game with a broken collerbone so Oklahoma gets the ball back and Adrian Petersen (the Heisman winner) gets a HB Direct to run it in from 43 yards. Petersen also gets a two yard run for the two-point conversion and we are tied 14-14 with about 2:15 to go. Alabama and Oklahoma both can't move the ball and with 17 seconds left Oklahoma punts the ball away BUT the Alabama returner fumbles the return after it hits his hands and Oklahoma recovers on the four with about 10 seconds left. A field goal kick later and a stopped kickoff return give Oklahoma the national title 17-14. Decent game but I thought the finish was cheap.

    Howard Finkel

Definitely. I think a hallmark moment of this was the 1991 Royal Rumble where after Slaughter pinned the Warrior several minutes passed and then Finkel went "Ladies and gentlemen here is the referee's OFFICIAL decision....the winner of the bout...and....NEWWWW..." and the whole crowd went apeshit in hatred for Slaughter.
  25. The CIA director does have the responsibility, though, to oversee the agency and make sure the right intelligence is getting to him and to the president. The least Tenet could have done is verify the validity of the intelligence he was obtaining before he told the President it was a "slam dunk." I just think Bush gets way too much of the blame when he was relying on the CIA to feed him important data. You could call it one of the faults of the "pyramid model" of a presidency where a president relies on advisors (the same happened with Reagan over Iran-Contra). I guess Lieberman is wishing that terror scare in the air had happened about a week ago. If it had I think he might have been able to win that election.
