    This Week in Baseball 5/26 - 6/1

Well tonight's my first look @ the Rays as they square off against the Rangers. I chose it over NYM-FL (which is another team I want to see because I'm eating my prediction earlier this year that they already would've been out of contention).

I'm not surprised Barr won it though, considering that more people donated in his name in the run-up to the convention (which was interesting to watch on C-SPAN). I've always felt the Libertarian Party would have a better chance at succeeding if they were to get rid of the "legalize it" part of their platform in regards to drugs. It makes them look too much like an extreme/fringe party to moderates (and I know some people here may argue that legalizing things is okay, not that I would disagree, but the general public they isn't buying it...at least not in this climate). Maybe by nominating Barr they can distance themselves from that position and try to attract more votes. I do think Barr could win a substantial number of conservative voters who are dissatisfied with McCain as the nominee, including myself. However, its ridiculous for him to assume he's going to get the 15% needed to get into the debates (and 15% doesn't even guarantee a debate slot anymore since you also have to be endorsed by some major, reputable newspapers which is absolutley ridiculous).

Putting Hillary on the ticket is short-sighted. It'll make Obama look weak after the press has said that he doesn't want Hillary on there and if he can't resist Hillary's demands to be on the ticket how is he going to say he can confront some of the worst dicators in the world? Granted, this is a stretch but its a theoretical argument that could be spun around to some independent voters and we know the Democrats desperately want to look strong on national security [which is going to be one of McCain's talking points in this election]. Also, the most important thing in politics is DELIVERING what voters want, not simply winning elections. I know the Democrats are desperate to get back the White House after 8 years but don't throw away governability for electability. An Obama-Clinton cohabitation in the White House would give us the in-fighting that plagued the Clinton-Gore years when Al Gore's influence was severely dilluted because Hillary thought she was entitled to be Bill's VP and her advice was more important than Gore's. And also, do you really think Hillary is going to be as somber as Cheney and typical VP's who were willing to take bullets for the boss in troubled times? Hell no, she'll be running for cover and blaming the same person she is serving under for the problems because she has ambitions far beyond the second slot.

Well Hillary has stepped to a new low today, bringing up a possible Obama assassination as a reason to stay in the Democratic race... http://www.nypost.com/seven/05232008/news/...y_wa_112232.htm

The only problem of Clinton fighting till the convention (which I knew would happen a long time ago because you really think she's going to quit?) is I don't see party leaders standing for it. Does she have the right? Sure, but I just do not see a lot of the party leaders/super delegates willing to let her make a war out of their happy little convention on national television. As a result, she might come to the convention looking for a fight but by that point a lot of the party will have unified behind Obama and will silence most of her arguments out of the gate. At least that's what the Democrats would do if they were smart... which means Denver is going to be chaos.

What's also funny is that Clinton is using an argument based on the Electoral College, while ignoring the fact that an Obama-McCain race would probably reshape the map and put new states in play. Also, its ironic since Clinton used to oppose the Electoral College several years ago...

I thought it was nice of Hillary to tell the kid who sold his bike/video games for her campaign that his $422 won the day in Kentucky. Bill drew a big crowd in my hometown yesterday but we're a college town so a lot of people that went were going to vote for Obama today (not that it helped him much). I wanted to go but couldn't due to some job interviews.

Vacant titles decided by DQ or countout

I believe Jericho beat Malenko for the vacant cruiserweight (or maybe TV) title at Bash at the Beach in 1998.

I think there might be some merit to that argument when you look at the consistency and performance thus far this season of several National League ball clubs such as Arizona. However, I'm always biased to the NL, not because the Reds play there, but because I hate the DH rule, it takes the strategy out of the game as far as I'm concerned and that's what I love to see in baseball games.

Thanks for posting that Dandy, that's some interesting stuff. Anyone have the link for this site?

I don't see an Obama-Clinton ticket happening because Obama's wife doesn't like Clinton and reports are that people running Obama's campaign aren't too big on adding her to ticket either. I think it'd be a bad idea to put Clinton on the ticket. First, I think she'd almost overshadow the ticket and too many Americans would be seeing this as a "co-presidency" rather than Obama's presidency. Second, some of the Republicans and independents who might defect to Obama would probably be disillusioned by having Hillary a heartbeat away from the presidency. Third, Hillary's message and Obama's message are in conflict with each other. Obama needs to choose someone who reflects his message of change and for the future rather than picking a figure of politics past like Clinton. Finally, and this is a weak argument but you never know what'll happen in the general, the Democrats might be pushing the envelope too far by asking voters to vote for a black/female ticket. I just think that the benefits Clinton brings to the ticket are overrated. If her supporters want to be sore losers and sabatoge the party this election cycle then let them because it will ruin Clinton's chances in 2012. Also, what real experience does Clinton have that Obama does not? She's accomplished very little in the Senate and never been a governor. I've never gotten the "experience" argument for Clinton anyway because WHAT elected positions did she hold until 2001? That said, I think Obama needs to go with a Clinton supporter, but not Clinton, for the VP slot. Someone like Ed Rendell (PA Governor) or someone of that nature would probably help him out without having to worry about the distractions of having Hillary on the ticket.

But with that same math would the Reds theoretically qualify for the Wild Card? I know you just did the math inside of the Central but what if that math is applied to the other WC contenders from today's standings (which would be the Mets/Phillies/Cards/Astros/Dodgers). I agree that the Reds have me pretty happy right now and it's nice to see the pitching coming together. I'd agree that the offense needs a jolt. Ken Griffey Jr. never plays well when I watch his games, although he did have a crucial RBI single in the middle of the game. I liked what I saw out of Janish today, especially in working the counts and showing patience at the plate, but just wonder whether he can maintain his performance level (not of course at the 3 for 3 level he played at today because that's not realistic but somewhere close wouldn't hurt) in the coming weeks.

Comments that don't warrant a thread

You could easily tell at the halfway point of the race that Big Brown was just cozying along before he wanted to make his move at 3/4ths. I don't really know if there is a horse out there that's going to beat him but the distance of the Belmont will be the test.

Bako's RISP this season is .290 and he's 1 for 1 on the year when runners are on 2nd & 3rd (which they would have been if Dunn's sac bunt had worked). I just say I was split on whether I wanted to see him come up because he seemed off today and was 0 for 3 and was not able to drive in Encarnacion in the 7th inning when Encarnacion was in scoring position (he struck out).

Well just when you've about given up on Adam Dunn he comes through in a big way with a 3-run walk off HR to beat the Indians 4-2. I'm just glad that his first attempt at a sac bunt failed (which I was 50/50 on because although it would've moved the runners to 2nd/3rd it would have left Paul Bako to drive them in).

God I hate David Weathers in relief. He's on course to go to 0-3 on the year after giving up a solo HR to Francisco in the 8th. Granted, we may not be in this situation right now if we'd stop stranding runners on 2nd and 3rd and finally give Harang some run support.

    This Week In Baseball: 5/12-5/18

Everytime I see Kyle Farnsworth pitch, and this dates back to his days in Chicago, he always has a major meltdown. Girardi put him in for the 7th inning and the YES network announcers were acting like he was some kind of savior but the guy has yet to get anyone out and in three batters has kept locating pitches up in the zone resulting in 2 HR's and a single. I can see why little Steinbrenner isn't happy with the way this team is playing this year. Santana has also been smart in this game because when he recognized early on that he was having location trouble trying to be fancy he's just pitched to contact and made quick work of the Yanks since the first two innings.

I almost chose to watch that game but I never seem to enjoy watching the Cards play and figure that I'll have better games to watch the Rays play in later in the season. Early in the Mets-Yanks game Santana is really having control/location issues, walking batters in four pitches.

So is anyone watching baseball at 1:05 today not going to watch Mets-Yankees and opt for Cubs-Pirates part 8 or TB-STL?

Yea, if Ventura enters I imagine the debate between the 3 candidates should get a good rating on C-SPAN. I always like watching those debates on C-SPAN @ election time, they let me size up the races across the country fairly easily.

MLB 2K8 and MLB: The Show

Anyone know how you go about getting the All-Star game for the Show in Dynasty mode? I'm having a ton of fun with this game, really like the pitching and batting controls. I just have the computer run the bases because I never have figured that out and I like to still have a bit of a "simulated" feel to the games where the coaches I hire are still running some of the things in the game. I also like the depth of the Dynasty mode in setting the giveaway days. It's also fun to see the nasty comments I got from Ken Griffey Jr. and Ryan Freel about making my team go to games on a beat-up bus.

NBA Playoffs 2008 - Conference Semifinals

Disappointing ending to another fun playoff run. I'll give the team credit, they didn't just pack their bags and go home when they were down by 19. We fought back but we came up just short at the end, just another heartbreaking loss in a long history of them in Utah. It's too bad we couldn't have gotten the lead and finished off game 5 on a better note because I feel that is where we lost control of this series.

NBA Playoffs 2008 - Conference Semifinals

Part of me is rooting for a Cavs win just so I can hope that the Pistons get mad as hell over what happened last year and just ravage them in 4 games. I'm not a Pistons fan by any means but I picked them to win the Eastern Conference once the brackets were announced so....yea.

Looks as if Jesse Ventura is considering a run for the US Senate in Minnesota against Norm Coleman and Al Franken. I think in that race he could win, especially due to the ease of registering to vote in Minnesota and the fact that neither candidate is incredibly appealing.
