  6. For this to be a real playoff in my view they just need to make the TOUR Championship count for everything and just use the points to determine who makes the field. It'd be a lot better hype to have 30 guys all gunning for $10 million than have someone clinch it beforehand. They could even do a gradual cut over all 4 days of the tournament by going from 30 to 20 to 15 to 10 or something like that.

Vijay gets to just stroll through Atlanta in 2 weeks and collect the money so that's gotta be a good feeling. He had a helluva run over the first two weeks of this thing, though, so he definitely deserved the win.

I think a Tiger-less Ryder Cup definitely makes things more interesting. I'm still somewhat kicking myself over not going through a broker to get tickets after I lost the lottery for them, but I can see things on TV just as well.

For those that are more informed of future tour schedules, is another major coming to Valhalla anytime soon?

  7. Anyone here pick up Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09? I picked it up yesterday and just had the time to play one round of golf @ Sawgrass but it was fun. The two/three click swings option bring back memories of the old school SNES golf games (just with much better load times this time).

The only real detriment I see in the game right now is the commentary team blows, but I am happy to see that the custom courses are gone and real ones got added in. EA Cup mode looks fun (its 3 quick holes of matches against another player in a World Cup-style format of 16 golfers) too.

I might also add that I got the PS2 version, so the swing coach isn't in mine unlike the XBox 360 and PS3 versions. However, I find it to be an enjoyable game thus far, even with my custom golfer who can only drive the ball about 240 yards right now due to low skill level.

  8. And just to think 8 years ago I was so pumped about the GOP's chances in the election. This time I just feel an oncoming sense of dread. My enthusiasm level is at ZERO for this one. I have never felt so underwhelmed by a GOP convention in my life. If you had told me THIS was going to be the ticket a year ago I would have laughed, not necessarily with McCain at the top, but with the person he chose to accompany him.

  9. Something about this woman I just don't like...When McCain announced this pick he lost my vote for sure as I was hoping from Romney. However, there's just something about Palin that turns me off, probably the fact that I don't see her as presidential material. I just don't take her very seriously.

  13. Please let it be Bill Clinton.

That does bring up an interesting question though. Could Bill even be selected VP since he has already used up his term limit? Or does the term limit only mean you can't be President more than 8 years consecutively but you can return after a 4 year break. I've never really fully understood if a former successful president could return as a VP.

Actually I think that he could be selected for VP because here's the hitch: The U.S. Constitution only allows you to be ELECTED president for two terms but also allows someone to serve as president for up to 10 years. This is why LBJ could have run for a third term in 1968 (which he declined to do so).

Basically, Bill could be VP and serve but he could never run for president again. However, if Obama was elected and then resigned/died in office, Bill could theoretically serve for two years which would prompt a presidential election to be a bit off-key and mess up the yearly rotation forever. For example, if Obama stepped down in 2009 and Bill served till 2011 then we'd have a presidential election then and not 2012.

But it's not going to happen.

  14. It looks like we have the same scenario we saw in the Israel-Lebanon skirmish two summers ago. I believe that Russia WILL eventually push into Georgian territory after they make sure Georgia is clear of South Ossetia. They will do this to establish a buffer zone against further Georgian military encroachment, just as the Israelis did in Southern Lebanon until 1997 and were inclined to do again in 2006.

There are two big problems in this skirmish for the U.S. and the world. First, the U.S. is going to lose diplomatic face in this struggle because Georgia is looking to us to help them because they helped us in Iraq and due to the fact that we are not going to go to war with Russia over Georgia there are going to he hard feelings when this is done (especially if Russia seizes a quarter or so of Georgian territory). Also, there are implications for a future Georgian governments attitude with the U.S. because I doubt that Saakashvili will see out his term in the aftermath of this.

Second, there is the unique possibility of a wider war. Abkhazia, another breakaway territory in Georgia, has started to launch attacks against Georgian troops in the Kodori Gorge and reports have indicated that Russian troops have landed there as well. Furthermore, Ukraine is thinking of refusing Russian access to ports in the Crimea because of actions in Georgia and their willingness to be neutral. If Russia tries to force these ports open it could lead to war with Ukraine. Also, this war has the potential to explode other ethnic problems in the Caucuses. In a highly unlikely scenario, Russia could expand its reach with its military forces to capture back entire pieces of territory/disestablish sovereign nations to re-establish some influence of the old Soviet Union.

In fact, the only benefit we might gain strategically is that countries that have had big debates about whether they need more Western protection as a deterrent to Russian aggression (such as Ukraine) may now favor those close ties in allowing our military bases to be in their territory.

On the election front, John McCain seems to have gained a benefit as his firm line against Russia after their attacks has been picked up by President Bush and Obama has gravitated to that position (that is if you want to believe the spin the McCain camp is putting on everything). As an election observer, I also have to wonder whether Obama's vacation to Hawaii is going to pop up in some McCain ads ala Hillary's 3AM ads in the Democratic primary.

  15. Padraig's performance on the back nine was one of the best back nine performances I've ever seen and those clutch putts that he knocked in at 16 and 18 were amazing. I think this was the only thing that could've prevented Tiger from being player of the year, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see Woods win because of his performance early in the season before the injury. However, this is a players, not a media vote, so I think that will be enough to put Padraig over the top. I am definitely not looking forward to the drive-by sports media spin on things when people who only casually follow golf are going to say "Yea but Harrington only won because Tiger wasn't there! Tiger would have won these two majors by over ten shots! Blah, blah, blah."

JB Holmes was textbook in how not to start off the final round of a major championship today. I think he started the first two holes with a 7 and a 6 and his boneheaded play when he was under the tree on the first killed any potential he had.

  16. Nice to know it took the mainstream press NINE MONTHS to break this story when the National Enquirer was already publishing stuff about it in December weeks before the Iowa caucus. This pretty much dooms Edwards political future both short and long-term because cheating on a wife who is fighting cancer is definitely not good.

  17. By the limited amount that I've read so far, though, Georgia was moreso the aggressor here by invading South Ossetia because Saakashvili's presidency hangs by a thread on reclaiming that territory for Georgia. Why Georgia decided to take this action, KNOWING that it would cause Russia to intervene (because Russia gives citizenship to the people of South Ossetia) is baffling to me.

Georgia better hope that the world can now negotiate a ceasefire because if Russia wants to use its military to crush Georgia it can and that would be a major blow geopolitically for us due to the fact that a critical pipeline for our oil which runs from Azerbaijan to Turkey goes through Georgian territory. This whole issue is another reason why I never favored granting Georgia membership in NATO.

On a less serious note, I wonder how many Americans today thought that Russia was invading the U.S. state of Georgia. I ran into one person that actually thought this and had to explain to them that NO, there was actually a country called Georgia.
