    This week in the NBA

Shaq + Elite Wing Player Round 3 would have to make the Cavs the favorite for the title this year. The Suns would benefit by getting Shaq out of the run and gun and getting a good 3-pt shooter in Pavlovic. I don't think it would help the Suns that much, but it's ok as a Steve Kerr "Hey, sorry, I fucked up" move.

The biggest plus to this trade for Houston is that they'd actually have a real back-up center with Boone. A starting lineup of Alston, Wafer, Carter, Scola, and Yao seems alright, but the bench would be pretty thin after the deal. Doesn't seem like that big of an upgrade offensively, and it's a downgrade defensively.

I don't know why the Rockets would be looking to trade T-Mac for his cousin. Vince is being more productive this year, but you gotta think long term here. T-Mac's contract runs out in 2010 like everyone else, and he'll probably retire at that point. Just let the T-Mac experiment run its course, then in 2010 use all that money to re-sign Yao, evaluate the other FA options, and go from there.

    2009 Movie Tournament Finals

I vote for Shawshank since it's my favorite movie ever, but Goodfellas would probably be in my top 10, so I don't have a problem with it winning.

    NBA All-Star Weekend

Normally, the bagging is the responsibility of Charles Barkley, but there was that whole DUI thing that kept him off the show. I thought the 3-pt contest was the worst I've ever seen. Not one person could break 20? I thought the dunk contest was ok. Not the best, not the worst. The forklift dunk was cool and Nate's kryptonite outfit was some good showmanship.

    Rock Band Draft

You know the drill. Sign up stays open through the weekend unless it fills up super fast. I'll take up to 20 people, but if there is a lower number, I'll probably want to make more rounds because there are so many options here. Any rock band from the 50's to now... Classic, metal, punk, screamo, whatever. Ok, we'll get this started now. When you make a pick, I encourage pictures and/or youtube links to your favorite song by your chosen band. No embedding, though. It makes the page look like shit. Also, keep in mind this is a rock band draft, so solo artists do not count. I'm thinking 15 rounds. If there's a lot of desire for the standard 10, I'll do that, though. Official order: 1. TheOriginalOrangeGoblin 2. Dr. Zoidberg 3. Nighthawk 4. Jebus 5. Gosunkugi 6. Darthtiki 7. Brooklyn Zoo 8. Louisiana Needs Money

I hate it when teams move, but "Saints of Los Angeles" would be pretty cool. Moving the Hornets to Seattle would look really stupid in retrospect. Instead of just putting Hornets in OKC full time, they move Seattle's team to OKC, and the Hornets to Seattle. What a mess.

    Movie tournament anyone?

Action/Adventure: T-2: Judgment Day Comedy: Mallrats Crime/Gangster: Casino Drama: The Shawshank Redemption Epics/Historical: Gladiator Horror: Silence of the Lambs Sci-Fi: The Empire Strikes Back War/Western: Saving Private Ryan Although, I don't know if I like the breakdown. Drama, Crime, and War/Western seem like they would have more quality representatives for a "best movie ever" poll, whereas it'll be a stretch to get 16 movies from say the comedy category that could legitimately contend for best ever.

I don't think it'll actually happen, but Vin-sanity to the Spurs would be so weird that I want to see it.

    Greatest Living Ballplayers

Off the top of my head for NBA: Starters PG: Magic Johnson SG: Michael Jordan SF: Larry Bird PF: Tim Duncan C: Bill Russell Reserves PG: John Stockton SG: Kobe Bryant SF: LeBron James PF: Kevin Garnett C: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar I'd round it out with Reggie Miller and Hakeem Olajuwon. Coach is Phil Jackson.
  16. Didn't Adrian Wilson lower his shoulder into the holder when he ran him over? Harrison didn't get ejected because no one with any name value is going to get ejected from the Super Bowl. If Boldin did the same thing, they wouldn't have tossed him either, and it's stupid to assume they would. And I don't know why the excessive celebration wasn't called. Probably the same reason several holds on Harrison weren't called.
  17. Or the replay official. How can they not thank the true MVP behind their last 2 SB victories? Both of Santonio's feet were clearly down when they zoomed in, and Warner had lost control of the ball before his arm went forward. The replay guy also sure helped the Steelers out by overturning that Roethlisberger rushing TD in the first, and the Warner non-fumble in the third. The only bad call Zona got was the roughing the passer, but they got away with a ton of holdings on Harrison and Woodley that weren't called either.

    Biggest Fall from WrestleMania Grace

I wouldn't say it's the worst, but The Big Show went from challenging for the WWF title to challenging for the Hardcore title (WM 16-17).

NFL Preliminary Hall of Fame 09 List

Glad to see Derrick Thomas make the cut this time around. Carter getting snubbed again is ridiculous, though. I thought Shannon was a gimme too, but maybe guys who were only the second best all-time at their position don't deserve to go in so quickly.

Worst Year Ever for Pro Wrestling

2001 still had enough good ppvs and matches that I wouldn't call it the worst. Wrestlemania and Summer Slam were both top-notch that year. Although, the US indy scene was still in the dark ages and Japan wasn't having a very strong year either, so I would say it was a down year overall, just not the worst. 1993 and 95 were horrible years for American wrestling, but Japan was awesome then, so I couldn't say those were the worst either. I think the worst since I've been watching would be 2002. Japan still wasn't that great, most of the early ROH stuff hasn't aged well, and the bad in WWE was far out-weighing the good.

    What Killed "SNICK" for You?

I went to a GUTS taping when I was about 8 or 9. I loved all those Nickelodion game shows. I watched Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, Family Double Dare, etc well after I out-grew the rest of the channel.

    Sports Cliches

Undersized white guys in baseball, football, or basketball are usually "scrappy." I think David Eckstein was the poster child for scrappiness. My least favorite is "He's the first one in the gym, and the last one out." I've even heard announcers use that on two players from the same team during a game.

    Future HOFers on Your Team

Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger: He's had a great start to his career, even if he has had the benefit of a strong defense. He still puts up pretty good numbers, and if he wins some more titles and doesn't die due to holding the ball too long, he could have a shot. Hines Ward: He's been an excellent, tough, consistent player over his career, but his numbers aren't real flashy and WRs have enough trouble getting into the HOF as is. Troy Polamalu: Seems to be the most popular guy on the team. He's got solid numbers, but more importantly, he makes plays you remember. He'll be the face that's associated with the great Steeler defenses this decade, so he has a pretty good chance if he keeps up his current pace for a few more years. Rockets: Tracy McGrady: He'll probably need to get out of the first round of the playoffs, but if he gets that monkey off his back he has a great shot. His numbers are usually good when he plays despite injuries, and he does have a couple scoring titles and a bunch of all-star and all-NBA teams to his credit. If he wins a title, he's a lock. Yao Ming: This is a tough one. On one hand, he has solid stats and a bunch of all-star appearances, but he also has the dreaded "soft" label and some of those early ASG votes were clearly inflated by Chinese favoritism. He also has yet to have any playoff success. It could very well come down to whether or not he gets a title. As Paul Pierce showed last year, you can go from "guy who puts up big numbers but doesn't accomplish anything" to "sure-fire HOF lock" by winning the big one. Dikembe Mutombo: Another border-line candidate. Doesn't have impressive scoring numbers, but he is the premier shot-blocker of his generation and contributed to some fairly successful teams. If defense alone could get you to the hall, Deke would be a lock, but the NBA is a scorer's league. Astros: Lance Berkman: He's been the best hitter on the team since Biggio and Bagwell got old. Unfortunately, the rest of the team has been notoriously poor offensively (even in the good 04/05 run sans Carlos Beltran), so his numbers may not be HOF good by the time it's all said and done. Roy Oswalt: He's consistently been one of the better pitchers in the NL this decade. He has been slowed by injury a couple of times, but he has put up multiple 20-win seasons and has few ASGs to his credit. He also showed up in big games and usually out-performed Clemens and Pettitte come playoff time. His record is strong, so if he keeps his percentage where it is and keeps that ERA down, he should have a shot.

    Rock Band Draft

I could go a few more rounds, but with people starting to fall off and miss picks, I think we should stick with the scheduled 15 before it gets too disorganized. I was thinking about starting a new draft subject anyway. Also, my last pick: Symphony X

    Rock Band Draft

I don't think the Jackson 5 really qualify either, but it's the last round and we're kind of limping towards the finish line as is with several people missing picks, so I'm more inclined to just let it go. Although, if Jebus would re-pick, that'd be great.
