Interesting matches we've never seen/heard about
Just John replied to JoeDirt's topic in General Wrestling
On youtube, I found some really interesting pairings. Don't know how many people know about them... Some of the intriguing ones. Kenta Kobashi vs. The Big Bossman Kobashi and Kawada vs. Stan Hansen and RVD (from sometime in 93, I think) -
Or we could go full Vince Russo style and have Eddie's spirit turn heel at NWO. Rey and Orton are weak after 20 minutes of fighting. Rey looks up to the Heavens for strength, but receives none. All of a sudden, Orton is invigorated with new life, and nails Rey with the 3 amigos and a frog splash for the win.

10. Kenta Kobashi vs. Jun Akiyama (Noah 10/7/04): A very fun, and high impact puro match. I figured I needed to put some puro on here since I've grown to love it recently. Unfortunately, I can only watch puro out of context, and therefore can't get the full story necessary to make any match a high-favorite. 9. Chris Benoit vs. Dean Malenko (Hog Wild 96) A classic technical match between two of my all time favorites. I don't think it gets enough respect because everyone's too busy overreacting to the over-exaggerated crowd reactions. Oh well. I still love it, and I'd say it deserves a spot in my all time favorites. 8. Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho vs. HHH and Steve Austin (Raw 5/01) I love the feel good moments, and this was right up there with the best of them. Watching Benoit and Jericho get the belts was very fun to watch as it unfolded. The quad tear added another interesting and historical element that makes this match one of the more memorable ones for me. 7. HHH vs. The Rock (Judgment Day 2000) The only 1 hr. IM worth a damn in my opinion. A very nice display by HHH at the top of his game, and a surprisingly great all-around performance by The Rock. Lots of good action, creative falls, and few dull moments make this one of the fastest hours in a wrestling match I've ever seen. The ending was a mess, but I did mark for UT's return and the crowd was hot for it. 6. Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle (Summer Slam 01) A very heated, intense fight that I still get into today. The story plays out perfectly, and even the disappointing finish is beautiful in the way it makes you feel really upset that Angle couldn't get the belt. 5. HHH vs. Cactus Jack (No Way Out 2000) Far and away, the best HIAC match in my opinion. They effectively utilized the brutality potential in the cell, and made a nice transition to the outside spotty stuff. Unlike Mankind/UT, the big spot made sense and wasn't rushed. I love this match, and upon review, really like it more than the Rumble match, which I find a bit overrated nowadays. This match still holds up today for me. 4. Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi (RoH 05) This one's fairly recent, but it immediately earned a place in my heart. I love the stiff, hard-hitting, make-every-move-count style matches and this is the best I've seen. It's like the Benoit/Regal Pillman match kicked up a few notches. It also led me to seek out lots more of Kobashi's work, and I have not been disappointed. 3. Lex Luger, Sting, and Randy Savage vs. Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and ??? (Bash at the Beach 96) So, wrestling wise, this match wasn't all that spectacular, but this is just a list of my favorites, so who cares? The ending is all that really matters, as I always get sucked into the heat of the moment, even though I must have watched it like 30 or so times by now. The Hogan turn was brilliant and the heat is intense. 2. Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar (No Way Out 2004) This goes down as one of my favs for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, Eddie winning the title was without a doubt my #1 feel good moment in wrestling. The storyline was solid, and the story in the ring matched up perfectly. The wrestling was pretty nice as well, which is always a plus. 1. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero (Halloween Havoc 97) My absolute favorite match ever. I just loved everything about it... The story, the spots, the wrestling, the pace, you name it. Both guys played their roles to perfection and the end result was one of the finest matches you'll ever see.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought SD was pretty good for the most part. Good: - MNM vs. Mexicools - Kurt Angle being booked as a threat - JBL Promo - Finlay/Benoit was a nice quick, hard-hitting match - A CW angle taking place somewhere other than Velocity - Perfectly acceptable ME tag match Bad: - Overuse of Eddie references by Mysterio and Orton. It's pretty sad they using a dead guy to get two current wrestlers over. - Juniors. I hate them. - Burchill the Pirate? Well, I'll let it pan out before passing full judgment.
-
But who would the killer be? Rikishi? "I did it for the Rock..." Orton? Getting too into his gimmick... Essa Rios? It's always the quiet ones. Maybe Eddie stole his green card or something.
-
Doesn't sound too bad, except for the fact that Mark Henry is still the ME picture.
-
So, how will HHH explain in the coming weeks why he is being cheered while the crowd shits on Cena? I guess I can't say for sure that's what will happen, but if HHH plays his comical smart-ass, yet tough guy heel schtick, that would seem to be certain death for a stale, unfunny Cena. Now insert your conspiracy theories on how HHH would use these reactions to justify taking the belt off Cena at WM.

Hm, I really wanted to see what matches would be ranked higher. I was just skimming over "his" analysis anyway. Oh well.

The Day After Tomorrow is a perfect one to make fun of with a group. I've done at least 3 times, and each time, someone points out a scientific/plot error that I hadn't heard before.

I'm sure I could name 10 matches that I think are better than Bret/Austin, especially if we're not limited to American matches. Still probably top 20, but I don't know why everyone's discrediting the list already... Let's let it pan out, then analyze, criticize, etc. I for one, am curious to see where it goes from here.

Hands down, what is the worst gimmick ever?
Just John replied to JoeDirt's topic in General Wrestling
Scott Hall as an alcoholic... Although I thought the time Hall had Konnan in the abdominal stretch, then got his drink and began drinking while keeping Konnan in the hold falls under the "so bad it's funny" area, so it may not count. Harlem Heat in chains with a Southern "manager" was pretty bad too. -
Countries so obsucure, we've gone nearly 2 pages without mentioning them: Gabon Benin Belarus Georgia Armenia Togo Mali

Surf Ninjas.

This discussion would not be complete without mentioning... FREDDY GOT FINGERED Absolutely terrible. There are no redeeming qualities to this movie. To say the jokes are unfunny is a ridiculous understatement. Since it's a "comedy," I'll just forego bashing the plot because comedies are usually pretty weak in that area. Still, there is not one likeable character in this movie, and as a "comedy" it fails at its only goal of being funny. Even with really bad comedies, there's usually one spot that gets smile, or possibly even a chuckle, out of me. There was no such instance in this movie. Additionally, there's nothing really to make fun of with your friends, because the movie is so absurd, there's nothing to add except groans and yawns. Tom Green should be banned from media and society for this abortion of a film. I have similar issues with Napoleon Dynamite, but even that looks like an Oscar-worthy film compared to FGF.

I think Backlash 02 was prior to the official brand split. I could've sworn Judgment Day 02 was the first ppv under the brand split (and the name WWE, as well), but I could be wrong.
-
If that's the case, then it's definitely one of the most overrated shows ever. It was solid, but it wasn't even the best WCW ppv that year, let alone the best ppv ever.

That's funny, I vaguely remember Edge carrying a 56 old man to a damn good TLC match not a while ago. Ok... 1. Carry job = One wrestler giving an exceptional performance in a match to make up for another wrestler's lackluster performance in order to make the match good. 2. The TLC wasn't that good, in my opinion. Better than it should have been, but not good. First of all, you have the inherently flawed concept of a singles TLC match--A match that relies on lots of high spots. With 6+ guys you have a rotating cycle of spot doers, while other guys can rest. In this match, you just had lots of resting, and only a couple worthwhile spots. The ending was very anticlimactic. Edge takes a big table bump, then still beats Flair up the ladder? Even with the interferrence, that's lame. 3. No one's really to credit for a "carry" in this match, as both men did their parts to make it watchable. Flair bled buckets, took a good table spot, and took one really sick chair shot that sticks out in my mind. Edge did his part too, but he certainly didn't have to make up for Flair.

I'd classify myself as just an average person on this board. Been around a while, have a decent number of posts, but not in the "in" crowd, though using terminology like that on a message board seems somewhat laughable. It would be ignorant to speculate on and judge my own post quality, so I won't. I don't really know or care what most people here think of me, but I thought it'd be interesting to hear a thought from someone besides the usual posters. As your average run-of-the-mill poster, I'd say the discussion on this board is far and away the best of any wrestling board I've been to. Seriously, go check out some other sites, even so-called "smark" boards. Is the WWE folder perfect? No, but no one is ever going to change that. The WWE folder here is way more active and generally higher quality than most other boards. I highly encourage people who look down on the WWE folder here to browse some other message boards and TSM won't look nearly so bad in comparrsion. If you're looking for solutions to clean up the WWE folder, you won't find them. That's the largest folder and the most attractive forum to new posters. The best approach for a "veteran refuge" would be a private folder, headed up by those most adament about distancing themselves from the masses. They could have their small section and only mods and whoever was chosen by the forum leaders could get in. I know other boards that do this and it works pretty well. The private folder gets good discussion and allows people to talk about wrestling while avoiding people they don't like. I think that's something the mods could look into as a viable solution. "Purging" the WWE folder will go nowhere because you can only have so many people in charge which reduces the amount of "acceptable" discussion. That would be quite counter productive if your goal is to get fresh new ideas in the folder. Imagine if the US government just started deporting people for not having "acceptable" views. Free speech lends way to a lot of good ideas. Sure, the problem is free speech also leads to some stupid ideas, but you just laugh and move on. The private folder idea accounts for this, as you could still visit the WWE folder, but if you felt you weren't getting anything, you can go to your safe haven private folder with people and topics you like. That's just my 2 cents.

I'm actually glad they're going this route with UT/Angle at NWO. Like someone said earlier, WWE would really book themselves into a corner putting that match on at Mania. You either kill UT's streak or waste a title reign on him while killing Angle's immense overness. And I actually would rather see Mark Henry fight UT at Mania over Angle. You know why? Because Mark Henry sucks and should be used as a jobber to put over Taker. UT hasn't really put out any quality matches since going back to the deadman persona. Well, I guess his first Orton match wasn't bad, but that's one in 2 years... Anyway, there's no point allowing either of these two guys to drag down someone else at Mania. You can kill two birds with one stone and confine a lot of "suck" into one match. Would the match be good? Fuck no, it wouldn't. But who cares? Keep it short, Taker keeps his streak, Henry stays away from anything good, the match is fogotten, and everyone's happy. Then let Angle and Benoit fight guys they can have good matches with that can be remembered.

Well, it's kinda true... It's just one of those answers that pops up on most people's "underrated" lists whenever they go around. I don't know if that takes away it's underrated status or not.

WCW had some very underrated ppvs. Starrcade 95 Fall Brawl 96 Slamboree 97 Not saying most people thought those shows were bad, but they just hardly get noticed. To be fair, Starrcade 95 is one of those that most universially agree is underrated. Ohtani/Guerrero is quality--Probably **** or so. Benoit/Liger and Wright/Kanemoto are both in the *** range as well. The commentary is brilliant the whole way through (it was Dusty's first ppv). Tony actually came across as very knowledgeable and interracted well with the other two. Brain was weaseling it up. Dusty was just himself... Going off on rants about Ohtani/Martini confusion, playing possum, and Heenan being a snake in the grass. As for the other two, most people probably couldn't name a single match on the card, but both shows are excellent. Fall Brawl was probably the high point for the NWO in 96, as they were just perfect as the cool heels. The whole Sting storyline was well done and unfolded nicely in an underrated Wargames match. Also on this card, there was a **** Mysterio/Super Calo match, plus ***(+) matches including DDP/Chavo, Konnan/Juvi, Benoit/Jericho, and Wargames. Only the Harlem Heat vs. Nasty Boys match drops below ** in a very enjoybale show. Slamboree really doesn't get noticed because of the lack of any major angle happening on the show. However, Ultimo/Regal was a **** affair. ***(+) matches include Mysterio/Yasuraoka, Malenko/Jarrett, a fabulous carry job by Benoit with Meng (one of Meng's best matches for sure with an awesome finish), and very fun ME that saw Flair, Piper, and Kevin Greene take on Hall, Nash, and Syxx. This was Flair's first match back from injury, and the crowd was super hot for it. WCW also got a decisive victory, which was rare and refreshing at the time.
-
First of all, the Uncensored match wasn't even that good. Granted, a lot of that was due to a stupidly booked ending, but even the body of the match wasn't spectacular. It was stiff, but also slow and sloppy at times. It also got ZERO reaction from the crowd. It really was a poor, homeless man's version of Benoit/Regal from the Pillman memorial show. And that was 10 fucking years ago. This match would be awful if it happened today.
-
If you count WCW days, The Big Show's (or in this case Giant's) match with Sting from Slamboree 96 is way better than any A-Train match I've seen. I think Benoit had a good match with him too, I wanna say from Clash 96... And Show's had some good matches with Lesnar and Angle too. I never got into much A-Train did, personally. His match with Kane (I think where DDP interfered) was way better than it should've been, but hardly spectacular. And in all honesty, out of all the people who've wrestled him, who hasn't had at least one decent match with Benoit?

This gimmick is gonna get old fast. I don't know why everyone likes him, but soon enough his popularity will fade as the gimmick becomes increasingly stale over the next few months. I nominate him to be UT's annual GAB murder victim.
