The roll up as a finisher

The WWE uses the rollup as a finish in its matches WAAAAAAAY too much. They LOVE to have heels win with the rollup instead of a finisher. Maybe they think the marks look at it as "well, the good guy lost, but the bad guy got lucky" whereas if the heel wins with his finisher it makes the face look bad or something? I don't really like it. Sure, a rollup can be the perfect finisher some times, (HHH vs. Shelton Benjamin comes to mind) but not ALL the time. I think a big part of establishing a character marks care about is giving them a recognizable finisher. But the "rollup using the tights or feet on the ropes" thing is just done way too much, IMO. Am I the only one who thinks this, or do you think it's not that big of a deal?

Here's the card: Main Event #1- Non Title Match ROH World Champion Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk vs. Homicide with Julius Smokes Main Event #2- Scramble Cage Melee The only way to eliminate someone is to jump on them from the top of the cage!!! Already announced: Jack Evans, Altarboy Luke, Fast Eddie, Dan Maff, BJ Whitmer, Loc, Devito, Dunn, Marcos, Diablo Santiago, Oman Turtuga, Trent Acid!!! ROH Tag Team Title Match Ricky Reyes & Rocky Romero defend vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe ROH Pure Title Match Doug Williams defends vs. John Walters Grudge Match #1 Colt Cabana vs. Austin Aries Grudge Match #2 Ace Steel vs. Roderick Strong Special Challenge Match Jay Lethal vs. Alex Shelley Izzy of Special K vs. Jimmy Rave of Prince Nana's Embassy Plus more with Allison Danger and a big announcement about ROH's return to Boston by Shawn Price!!!
  4. Hardcore Heaven is the one that went a half hour, right? Yeah, Living Dangerously is better (though still not a GREAT match) and the one they had on PPV the next year was better too, IIRC. Actually Hardcore Heaven 99 was the first ECW show I had ever seen, and that match was way better than anything else on the show...which tells you how good a show it was.

    TNA Impact spoilers

Jimmy Hart came out to open the show. He introduced Jeremy Borash who came out with the TNA Girls. XPLOSION MATCHES (1) The 3 Live Kru beat Kid Kash & Dallas & Michael Shane. The finish came when Ron "The Truth" Killings hit the scissor kick. A solid and fun opening match. The 3 Live Kru definitely knows how to work the crowd. (2) A.J. Styles beat Alex Shelly. This was the match of night by far. This was just an awesome match and it's too bad that it wasn't on Impact. The finish saw Styles roll up Shelly for the win. Excellent match. Abyss ran out after the match and went after Styles but Styles got out of the ring before Abyss had a chance to do anything. This led to Goldylocks chewing out Abyss. IMPACT TAPINGS (1) "Wildcat" Chris Harris wrestled "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels to a time limit draw. Pretty good match with some nice work from both men. The crowd wasn't really into the match and the start but with solid effort by both men the crowd was pretty into it by the end. After time ran out Larry Zbyszko came out and said that it would be too difficult to declare a winner therefore next Wednesday it will be Triple X vs. America's Most Wanted vs. The Naturals. (2) The Amazing Red & Chris Sabin & Sonjay Dutt beat three local wrestlers. Another pretty good match that saw the end come when Sonjay Dutt hit a 450 splash. Sonjay Dutt looked really good tonight and had some very nice spots. (3) Team Canada beat Mikey Batts & Jerell Clark & Rod Steele & Bruce Steele. Rather short match that saw then end come when Petey Williams hit the Canadian Destroyer. Good match while it lasted. (4) Abyss defeated Sonny Siaki. The end came when Abyss hit the Black Hole Slam. Good match with Abyss being rather popular with the crowd. Abyss ended up taking out Shelly in the middle of the match which led to him getting chewed out afterwards by Goldylocks. The 6 Points of Impact aired. This week's guest is a NASCAR driver. (5) Jeff Jarrett beat Frankie Capone. Really short match the saw Capone get little to no offense. The end came when Jarrett hit the stroke. Not all that great of a match. (6) Jeff Hardy beat Kazarian. Jeff Hardy got the win with the Swanton Bomb after Michael Shane accidentally superkicked Kazarian. Solid match with Hardy being very popular with the ladies. Hardy seems to be making some improvements with his in-ring work. Show Notes: Really good show this week. Several really good match especially Styles versus Shelly. I really can't say enough about that match. Its not that it went so long, it only went about ten minutes, but it was excellent while it lasted. It had a little bit of everything and everything went perfectly. Match of the night by far. I'm tired of seeing a Jeff Jarrett one-minute squash every week. It just seems like a big waste of time to me. It does nothing to help his character like they seem to think it does. It just makes it look like he's not that good of a wrestler. Crowd Notes: Tonight was the biggest crowd that I have seen in a couple weeks. At least since Hurricane Charley came through. The crowd was also the loudest its ever been. I think that's because its starting to become more fans than tourists. For the first couple weeks it was mostly people from Universal Studios that just came because they had a free ticket not because they came to see wrestling. Now its mostly fans who came to see a wrestling event so they're loud and into the show and that always makes for a fun environment. Good show tonight

DAVE PENZER: "Ladies and Gentlemen, as Slamboree continues, this is the Cruiserweight Battle Royale, the winner to face Chris Jericho tonight. In this contest wrestlers can be eliminated by either pin fall or when their feet touch the ringside floor. And ladies and gentlemen, here are the participants..." CHRIS JERICHO: "Hold on just one second here, David Penzer you unintelligible moronic high voiced dweeb! You know nothing about the sport of pro wrestling and you know nothing about these fine competitors coming out today. So I'm gonna do all the Jerichoholics a great favor. I'm gonna introduce all of the contestants in the cruiserweight battle royale. Let's face it, one of these fine contestants will get a chance at the cruiserweight belt, (they'll never win it), but tonight you're gonna see a great match from a great competitor. Let's get down to the list here..." "Coming out first from (?)(Sounds like Sunchimilko) Mexico, you'll notice his hat NEVER comes off, the master of trick-track, the master of Da Funk, he is Super Calo! Look at those moves ladies and gentlemen. You got about a one in ten chance of winning, maybe." "Next, from El Paso, Mexico, this guy used to be a great bar tender, but it hasn't translated into his wrestling skills, he is the scourge of the illustrious Guerrero family, he is Chavo Guerrero Jr. maybe a two in ten chance of winning." "Coming out next, from Mexico, this is a rags to riches story, from selling chimichangas on the streets to WCW is Ciclope!" "Then we got Damien. He can't afford a mask, he's using paint, but sooner or later he's gonna buy a mask, I'm guaranteein' you that." "Here we go, the winner of the Lou Ferrigno look alike contest, this guy is also from Mexico, El Dandy." "Coming out next is the (?), feather weight pacer(?) champion, El Grillo." "Now this guy pulled up in a nice rusted out '68 El Camino Chevy, he's the ugliest man in our sport today, he's the illustrious Quazijuice Skelerra." "A former champion in many countries, he's gonna rock rock til he drops, rock rock never stop, Marty Jannetty, ladies and gentlemen." "Coming up next from Allentown, PA. He's a lost and lonely soul, his name is Kidman. And Kidman, I've got some Calamine lotion for you after the show!" "This guy's the true shooter of WCW, does he have a chance? No, zero chance, no way, he's Evan Courageous, ladies and gents." "Oh yeah, straight from Minneapolis, Minnesota, I want my Lover Boy tape back, Lenny Lane!" "And of course we've got Psychosis, he's got a lot of hubcaps in his collection, if you need one, he'll procure one for you after the show." "This guy is Silver King, if he wins twelve more matches he'll be upgraded to Golden King." "This guy is Johnny Sinjer? Johnny SSS.... Johnny Swinger? You ever heard of this guy? I haven't. Zero out of ten chance in winning! No chance." "And last but not least, representing Villanos 1 through 62, from the Villano family, he is Villano IV." "Those are your contestants in tonight's battle royale, I'm going in the back for a coffee cause none of these guys will ever ever beat me for my belt!"

The Rock as Face or Heel?

I actually REALLY liked Corporate Heel Rock. He was just so damned good through late 98 and early 99 when they had to turn him back face once again.

I dug up some old ones: "...we live in a country where the President of the United States puts national security on the line for a girl that even I would have turned down in high school." Mick Foley at Breakdown in 1998. "I’d like to congratulate Al Snow on his endorsement contract with La-Z-Boy,which is kind of unusual since Al doesn’t usually sell chairs." Mick Foley, don't know when "Get your fat ass on the scale, Dracula." Hardcore Holly to Gangrel in 1999 when he was doing that whole "super heavyweight" thing. "We're providing the sophisticated entertainment you demand." Vince MacMahon in late 1997. Lawler: It must be so humiliating to get WCW spraypainted on your back. JR: It must be even more humiliating to work for them. "He looks more like the Big LOST Man to me!" (Hogan, after spraypainting Ray Traylor on Nitro.) Heenan: Sting is human like everyone else. Schiavone: I don't know if he's human...I think he's transcendant. "Armstrong and Finlay are two of the strongest competitors in this matchup." (Schiavone, during a SINGLES match between Steve Armstrong and Fit Finlay.)

The roll up as a finisher

I'm actually surprised they haven't written someone like Funaki to win matches with the small package, and start making "small package" jokes over and over. But I'm sick of the rollup and the WWE should get finishers over instead of rollups.

Homicide pinned Samoa Joe in the three way with CM Punk. Punk hit the Pepsi Plunge on Joe, but Cide gave Punk a lariat and stole the pinfall on Joe. This is the last time Joe and Homicide can face each other in a match until 2005, however.

    Ring of Honor 8/28 show

Ring of Honor announced tonight at their event in Braintree, MA that the promotion will be bringing in New Japan Pro Wrestling's Jushin "Thunder" Liger for matches on Friday 11/5 in Braintree, MA at the National Guard Armory and Saturday 11/6 at the Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The two events will be titled "A Weekend of Thunder." Liger, a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team champion, is considered one of the greatest Junior Heavyweight wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling. A New Japan Pro Wrestling stalwart, Liger is among the most innovative and popular stars in Japanese wrestling history. American fans got their first taste of Liger's work during a legendary feud against the late Brian Pillman over WCW Lightheavyweight championship which culminated in a tremendous match at WCW Superbrawl II in February 1992. Although Liger has made sporadic appearances in the United States during WCW's run in the late 1990s, this will be Liger's first mainland wrestling appearance in several years and the first where he'll be allowed to work to the best of his ability. For ticket information on the 11/5 event in Braintree, MA and 11/6 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, visit www.ROHWrestling.com. Credit: PWInsider.com

No, it's not going to be Gunn. Meltzer said it would be Dusty uinder a mask, so we'll see if he's right. I don't have any problem with 3LK. Sure, they probably don't put asses in the seats, but who really does, you know?
