How is FF VII's gameplay "dumbed down" or "simplified"? Comboing Materia is deeper than Espers and FF I, II and IV are about as simple as a RPG can possibly be. V is like the only one that is all that hard or complicated.
-
KOTOR is really easy and cinematic. That's why I like it. I named my KOTOR character "Yuna"!
-
I weep for a fallen Squall fan. Or was that just a "work" too?
-
Cinematic games are cool.

Before FF VII Square didn't even release every regular numbered FF in America. FF IV and V were deemed too hard and complicated for the US but FFT would have been fine? I don't think Tactics Ogre was such a huge success to make that be the case. FFT had a fairly limited release in the US(until it went GH) and this was even after FF VII's huge success! I know SSSC is a remake. I really doubt we'd have seen a remake of a Sega CD game on PSX like we did had it not been for the RPG genre's boom.

Well, so does FF VII but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. You can manipulate the stats in both. The FMV in modern day FF's is incredibly overhyped. People put over how the entire game is those yet the reality is there's not THAT many and few are over even 30 seconds long.

VI's individual traits are just like limit breaks, except you can do them at any time(which is actually pretty overpowered). How's that any different from VII? Magic and stat wise their characters are pretty much the same(a blank slate) in VI and VII. I remember the old days. Just because I didn't play the games doesn't mean I didn't follow the industry. We would have never got stuff like FF Tactics and Lunar: SSSC back then. That sucks.
-
Besides FF IV which FF game has individual traits and skills for the characters? I don't see how going mainstream is a bad thing. You liked it better in the early days when the US got 2 RPGs a year that were like 80 dollars?
-
Why do you care which FF someone played first or likes the most?
-
I didn't play FF before VII. What's wrong with that?
-
It's my favorite game ever.
-
Well I saw a copy of FF Tactics(non greatest hits) today and so I decided I'll give it another chance.
-
But leveling up is boring.
-
What if you're a girl?
-
Ok so I hate hard games, so I'm gonna pass on giving it another chance. Does anyone know if Arc the Lad is like FFT? It looks to be a strategy RPG.
-
I really want to get into FFT(just the original, not FFTA) but it's too hard. I could not even get past like the 4th or so battle. I fought some archers or whatever and just got owned. Does it remain that hard the whole game?
-
Yeah, and the Kathy Long inspired character.

Well, the reality is that she wears a mask in UMK3 because she's a palatte swap. ALL the female ninjas wear it. Kitana has revealed herself to be the princess and is no longer an assassin in UMK3 yet still wears that outfit. Actually UMK3 has a bit that shows she may be proud of her looks. In her Friendship she takes off the mask and looks in a mirror, appearing very happy with what she sees. Considering Friendships part of the story is kinda messed up though.... In MK Gold Kitana goes maskless yet Mileena is still wearing hers. Maybe she likes her looks yet hides them in public just to not draw attention to it.
-
Maybe. She could just LIKE looking all messed up. Kahn was originally not going to wear a mask and would look like Baraka(with the big teeth). Outside of concept art, we've never seen Kahn without his mask. I wonder what he looks like? According to John Tobias Shang Tsung's human appearance is actually a disguise, he is really a horrible looking demon. He showed art of Shang's real appearance in Gamepro.
-
Mileena's story makes no sense. How could Kitana have grown up thinking Mileena was her twin sister? Did Mileena just NEVER take off her mask or what? Why did Shang make a mutant clone of Kitana in the first place? Kahn is a real bastard though. He invades Edenia, kills the king, takes his queen as his own wife, then forces the princess to become his personal assassin. That's pretty evil.

If you want proof of what I'm saying look at the intro to MKII. That same site probably has it. IIRC.... "500 years ago Shang Tsung was banished to the Earth Realm. With the aid of Goro he was to unbalance the furies and doom the planet to a chaotic existance. By seizing control of the Shaolin tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only 7 warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's plan would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang. Facing execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro Shang Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grant him a second chance. Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in Outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself." Fun Fact: One of the pics from that intro is messed up. It shows Liu Kang beating Shang Tsung in the Warrior Shrine. That's impossible, as the final battle in MK1 is always in Goro's Lair.

Oh. I know. There is a TON of misinformation on the net about MK. Both storyline and gameplay information. It's so confusing. There's the movies, comics, books, and it's all conflicting. Even just following the story in the games is hard because they change established canon all the time. They're also really vague. Like I said before, it has never actually said Liu Kang won MK II. Everyone assumes it(because ...it's Liu Kang) but they've never bothered to confirm it. They haven't said who won a MK since the first. The story is so messed up we don't even know for sure if MK3 is a tournament or not.
-
He doesn't have much of a story in MK1. He basically just enters because Tsung was taunting him. The end of the world thing is because when he takes over the tournament after winning he invites other gods and their battles are so powerful they end up destroying everything.
-
In the movies and modern games, yes. But the whole "Outworld must win 10 tournaments in a row to enter Earth" was not part of the game's story until MK Trilogy. In the games the goal was not to win the tournament to take over Earth, it was to unbalance the furies and tip the scales of good and evil towards chaos. By tipping the scales the balance between worlds would be messed up and Kahn could invade Earth. Corrputing the pure and honorable Shaolin Tournament was the method, not the goal. But yeah, Kahn can go into other dimensions. Actually that's what Outworld IS. It's like a graveyard or wasteland of dead realms.
