I haven't really gotten the complaints about Hueco Mundo, myself. It might be worse in the manga (I only started from the chapters before the Ichigo/Grimmjow fight), and being caught up with the anime probably would have sucked (I caught up around the Ex-Espada fights), but I haven't really found it that boring. I thought the fights were interesting, and gave us samples of how strong the top Espada are. The ONLY fight I had a problem with, was Chad's, because I knew exactly what was going to happen. They built Chad's power up in his fight with his foe to the point where I *KNEW* they were going to use him as a plot tool. Everything else is/was fine...They had a goal, they went for the goal. Not much need to develop anything with the mains there. The only problem I have with Hueco Mundo, and the arc in general is Orihime's motivation. Kind of silly, really.

UFC 83 - Serra vs. St. Pierre 2
Hawkius Maximus replied to Lord of The Curry's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
Dave Meltzer used his hyperbole machine to say this UFC would have the hottest crowd in the history of MMA. I just rolled my eyes at first at that. But maybe he was right. The heat for this show is off the charts. Dave may have been right. The people going to this show are going to have their bust their asses cheering to beat shit like Sakuraba/Royce in terms of sheer volume, passion, and intensity though. The entire building seemed to shake when Sakuraba won that fight. You guys have a target to aim for though~! -
See, I had almost the exact opposite reaction. The Bound arc started off interesting. It was different. Then it was about the time when the cast couldn't figure out how to deal with the water bound that I started going "...wait...". Then it hit one of it's peaks of silliness when Ichigo was defeated by the major guy (Whose name I have forgotten) in about two moves using one hand. This is the same Ichigo who had previously "leveled up" to at or near Byakuya's level just episodes prior. The payoff was incredibly poor...just *POOF* and then some existential stuff from Ichigo. Most of the battles were interesting...Beyond the final one, but it was mostly just smoke and mirrors on the Bound's side unless the animators decided "Hey, we need them to actually fight here!". But that's not even the Bound arc's major problem. It commits the major crime of all filler. Not only does it mess with the hierarchy of the show itself by establishing a character equal or greater then some of the non-filler's top characters, but it's boring. And it goes on for like..what...40+ episodes? It just dragged on and on and on and on. I will say, that Mayuri whooping ass was a great moment, and anytime that one psychotic guy was on screen with his hyperactive body possessor tool thingy, I found it very amusing. Good filler, to me, is something that's fun to watch, and doesn't hurt the framework of the overall show at all. It just exists. It fills a gap. It doesn't try to BE anything beyond filler. When you try to make filler matter, then disaster strikes almost without fail. I still have NO IDEA how their gonna pull off this new filler arc thing. Given what takes place in the manga, they've already rewrote stuff, or delayed it so they could have the ending to set this up. It's kind of baffling that they thought *NOW* in the middle of the arc with major stuff about to happen...Now would be the *perfect* time for fillers.
-
Bleach is apparently going into fillers. No idea how long, but their introducing filler characters. Because this worked so very well last time. I'm honestly about to give up on this show. The break of two weeks or so let me read the manga, and I realized how superior it is to the anime. Add in that I've been iffy on it for awhile now (goes back to the...*gasp* last filler arc and all the stupid stuff the show keeps throwing in like the ability to skid...in the air...on THE SKY), and the concept of a new filler arc *IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CURRENT ARC* and I've just about had it.

If Bleach's English VA qualifies as "one of the best" in a long time, then that proves my point better then anything else I could say. -

I AM an elitist, because you saying Bleach has a good dub inspired a desire to stab everyone who made that dub in the ear for the pain that thing caused me. -
UFC 83 - Serra vs. St. Pierre 2
Hawkius Maximus replied to Lord of The Curry's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
That's actually an X factor for me in this fight. Serra hasn't fought since their last fight, and his back injury was pretty massive. There's no telling what Serra we could get. We could get a Serra who hasn't seriously trained until recently, a Serra who will never reach that level again due to the injury, or we could get the incredibly focused Serra from their first fight. Who knows? We KNOW GSP's gonna come in breathing fire though. If Serra's not in tip top shape mentally and bodily, GSP's gonna eat him alive. I view Serra as kind of like Couture, which is pretty ample praise I know. Both have some natural gifts, and a lot of training...but I don't think either is the *best* at anything in the game. Whatever deficiencies they have in their game they make up in planning. I don't think you can say that Serra really beats GSP in any category. What you can say, is Serra's very very smart. Serra had a game plan in that first fight, I'm betting he has one for this one. If it works or not is up in the air, but Serra's a clever fucker. He's probably got something in his head. On top of that, Serra's deceptively strong, so one blow could turn the tide. I'm excited for this fight, because there's several ways this could possibly go. Most end with GSP winning though. -
Well...that sucks. That's the only way I'm gonna get the Wii online.

I didn't realize the undercard of this show was so weak until I thought while I was writing my prediction "What the hell else is there on this?". Franklin/Lutter is a nothing fight. Franklin's got nothing to win, really, while Lutter didn't even make weight for his fight with Silva. Bisping/McCarthy...Eh. This show is a one fight show. -
I just finished the show...Overall thoughts: Opening X-Division Cage match ~ Fun, but forgettable. The storyline with Dutt & Lethal was actually pretty good here, and helped to make me forget the horrible videos for weeks. Curry Man shoulda won. Reverse Cage Women Thingy ~ Stupid. Not much to say about it. Stupid. BG vs. Kip ~ Neither are great workers, but they made this work to the extent they were capable of. Perfectly acceptable. Cuffs match ~ Traaaaaaaainwreck. When the hyperactive Don West is apologizing because there's too much going on in the ring for him to notice it all? Way too much going on. Super Eric is a cute gimmick, if stupid, but it kind of made everyone else look bad when he could take out four people on his own at the end. Women's Tag ~ This might be my favorite match of the show. Very simple. Very well worked. This had everything you need for a good tag match. The only downside is Melissa's gear held her back, but she showed ample skill in what basically was set up to show her off. I think Kong did all of...five things. Fun as hell. Mixed Tag ~ I missed most of this. I don't care enough to go re-watch it. Many people love Robert Roode, he personally bores me in the ring, and Booker T hasn't been great in the ring for years. Add in two women who aren't that good, and you have something that I didn't feel bad about taking a rest room break during. Lethal Lockdown ~ I really enjoyed this match...Until the top came down. The addition of weapons only took away from what was going on. The set up for AJ & Cage's fall looked FAR more impressive then their actual fall (Due to the fact that they could have DIED), so it made it a really stupid stunt as the payoff to it failed to deliver. After the top came down, any hint of storyline was thrown out for random weapon bashing. Good ending though. Joe/Angle ~ I'm still thinking about this one...I got what they were going for. Worker Shoot > Submission Grappling > High Spurt wrestling. I think I actually liked the opening worked shoot format more then the other segments. It didn't seem to have any of the "Oh, I'll just change positions here on the ground without you trying to stop me at all!" bits from worked shoot fights, and the striking looked pretty decent. This should have been a great moment, but the way they've built Joe up for months now kind of made this a fish in the water deal. Still, an interesting match that could lead to a change in how main events work in this country...Or be forgotten. Overall...A decent, maybe good PPV. I wasn't really blown away by anything ,but I wasn't really disappointed either. The big surprise was the woman's tag, which only made me more sure that TNA's got a damn fine collection of women, and it's the best booked division in wrestling right now.

Keiji Muto to challenge Nakamura for IWGP title
Hawkius Maximus replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in General Wrestling
I think you've said that before, and I don't know what to tell you. Tanahashi always gets fantastic reactions, much more then any of the other "Next generation" stars. It's not how good of a reaction he gets when he comes out, but how the fans respond during the match. And in the big matches? No one, not even Nagata in NJPW gets as great of reactions right now. That's kinda like saying John Cena isn't working in WWE because he gets booed. It's not accurate. -

Hawkius Maximus replied to Lord of The Curry's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
You all better riot if Serra wins. That would be *awesome*. My official prediction is the dark horse Serra. People like to say that first fight was just due to GSP being mentally unprepared, and I'm sure it was a factor, but Serra went in there with hardcore training and a gameplan that he executed to the T. He picked his moment, and unleashed those atomic bomb-like shots. If GSP gets antsy and tries to rush things, I could very well see Serra doing the same thing again. I have absolutely no idea who'd win on the ground. I won't be surprised if GSP storms in there and rapes Serra after how he demolished Hughes, and out-wrestled Koscheck though. -

For me, there's a complete disconnect between English Dubs and the anime's their on. In Japan, VA's will often use different voices, different style of speaking, They *emote* with the characters, Most are not annoying. It's very often that you'll hear one English VA use the same style of speaking, the same speech patterns, the same "emotion", everything exactly the same for EVERY role they do. David Lucas is by far the worst of this, his Shishio excluded. He atleast *tried* there. That's not even adding that a large amount of them sound completely idiotic, shrill, or annoying. Little kid, or "hyper" girl voices are the worst of the lot. Japanese women can pull off little kids. English VA's? No. Just...no. When I flipped on CN a month or so back to watch a Death Note episode (I had just finished it with subs), and heard Misa Amane's voice sounding like a VALLEY GIRL, my mind broke. Aya Hirano voiced her as cute and "bubbly", but the English VA just made her sound like a mall girl, vapid, and idiotic. That's not even getting into L sounding nothing like L at all. For my money, the best VA works that I've heard both dubs of are probably Rurouni Kenshin, and the "Of the Stars" series. Both English dubs try really, really hard to keep with the Japanese. Kenshin's not as good as the Banner and Crest series's though. I fully admit I'm one of those elitist fuckers who won't watch Anime if I can't see it with subs. I'm not ashamed of that at all. Anyway, back on topic. I liked DBZ, even when I was getting more and more into Anime and could see the plotholes and idiocy of the final arc, I liked it. I can't really say it's good, but to be fair, I've never seen the uncut Japanese episodes. I probably never will given how long the damn show is. The problem is, DBZ is by FAR the worst offender I've ever seen of "Power creep" that plagues all fighting anime. There's some other bad ones, but in DBZ, they get so strong they can destroy entire WORLDS with a flick of their wrist. I also kind of blame the show for being such a juggernaut that Yu-Yu Hakusho was forced to turn into DBZ-lite. I never finished that show, both due to CN's stupid time slots, and the fact that it had gone so far from what it WAS to a DBZ clone where people flew ten stories in the air and hovered and all kinds of silly stuff. -
Keiji Muto to challenge Nakamura for IWGP title
Hawkius Maximus replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in General Wrestling
NJPW doesn't push workers with "legit" backgrounds anymore. They haven't in years, since Riki Choshu took back over. NJPW pushes "strong" wrestlers, in that Choshu values wrestlers who can go out there and have high energy main events. It's most likely why guys like Tenzan, Chono, and Nakanishi have been completely demoted while under Choshu there has been a remarkable changing of the guard with Tanahashi, Nakamura, Makabe, and even Yano is being elevated (God knows why). The older guys are not capable of it. Tanahashi is considered by large portions of the fanbase the best heavyweight worker in years, and NJPW knows this. He'll get the IWGP for the third time later this year. This title reign for Nakamura was in the cards way back in August of last year. He was supposed to win the G1, not Tanahashi, and he was supposed to beat Nagata for the title, not Tanahashi. The problem is, whatever momentum Nakamura had (and he did have some) was dashed with his injury in the G-1 semi finals. He came back and very quickly won the title, but the fans still respect him to a degree, it just doesn't have the impact it should. -

Hari looks more and more like the only person in K-1 who might have a shot at stopping Schilt's path to a 4th straight crown. He looked fantastic in his fight last night. I said this last year for the GP too, and Hari went out first round, but he looked like a goddamn monster against Sefo. After YAMMA the night before, this K-1 show was excellent. The opening fight may go down as one of my favorite fights in the history of fighting. -

Semmy Schilt once again has shown that he could quite possibly go down as the strongest K-1 fighter in history. First ever KO loss in the entire career of Mark Hunt to a spinning back kick from Schilt. That man is fucking unstoppable in kickboxing. He hasn't lost in 20 months. -

I don't think anyone really said they expected it to be any good. Or have any expectations whatsoever beyond negative. DB/Z wasn't any good at the end to begin with, so a live action with American actors shouldn't fill anyone with hope. -

Dama...All dubs are terrible. I've heard maybe one or two good/decent ones beyond Cowboy Bebop. Bad dubbing is just...a universal quality to anime and movie imports here. I've gotten to the point where I can't listen to any English dub on anything. As for this...I dunno. That dude doesn't look ANYTHING like Goku which makes it remarkable. I also have no idea who any of the other people pictured are supposed to be. That's not a good sign. -
I bought a Wii off Ebay Express. I totally did not learn my lesson from the 360 fiasco. Got an extra Wiimote & Smash Brothers Brawl. If I had more money I'd hunt down Galaxy and a Dongle for Wi-Fi, but I can't afford the 79 dollars Amazon wants right now.

Keiji Muto to challenge Nakamura for IWGP title
Hawkius Maximus replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in General Wrestling
Muto really doesn't have a rub anymore, just like how Chono doesn't. That being said, since this match has never happened and the fact that there will be many people who will hold out hope that Muto will re-win the IWGP title, this could do some business. But it is no coincidence that Tanahashi lost to Suwama, and their immediately doing this match though. It's probably likely that Muto used himself as a bargaining chip to get Suwama the big win. If so, that's a pretty clever move and one that not many "Wrestling Promoters" would make. -

Not putting over Suwama would have been a bad mistake. You can think of what you will of him (Most people don't have high opinions of the man), but ever since the VM to face turn, the fans have rallied behind him significantly. During his first night match with Sasaki, they actually cheer him over Sasaki. Guy is hot right now. Doesn't mean he's a great worker, but you don't have to be a great worker to be over. The key to wrestling is to strike when the iron's hot. It's what NJPW failed to do with Goto last year. Hopefully AJPW doesn't fall for that trap. -
How does the Wi-Fi work with friends using codes? Does that work okay, or is Wi-Fi just busted?

I'm on Ep 7 and either that's something ahead of me, or something I didn't notice. Unless you mean Ibuki...and then I MIGHT know what you mean.

AJPW Championship Carnival 2008 thread
Hawkius Maximus replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in General Wrestling
AJPW, 4/8/08 (GAORA TV) Tokyo Korakuen Hall 1,700 Fans 1. Ryuji Hijikata & Katsuhiko Nakajima beat Nobukazu Hirai & Hajime Suruga (11:14) when Hijikata won by referee stop due to a crabhold. 2. Joe Doering, Kaz Hayashi & Seiya Sanada beat Nobutaka Araya, T28 & Manabu Soya (12:09) when Soya used a Jumping Powerbomb on Soya. 3. TARU, Shuji Kondo & Silver King beat Keiji Muto, KAI & Hiroshi Yamato (10:40) when Silver King used the Death Valley Driver on Yamato. 4. Champion Carnival - Block B: Suwama [3] beat Osamu Nishimura [1] (15:13) with a backdrop hold. 5. Champion Carnival - Block A: Satoshi Kojima [4] beat Taiyo Kea [0] (14:53) with a lariat. 6. Champion Carnival - Block A: Toshiaki Kawada [3] vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi [4] (30:00) ended in a time limit draw. 7. Champion Carnival - Block B: Minoru Suzuki [4] beat Kensuke Sasaki [4] (12:22) with a rear naked chokehold. BLOCK A 1. Keiji Muto [5] 2. Satoshi Kojima [4] - Hiroshi Tanahashi [4] 4. Toshiaki Kawada [3] 5. Taiyo Kea [0] BLOCK B 1. Joe Doering [4] - Minoru Suzuki [4] - Kensuke Sasaki [4] 4. Suwama [3] 5. Osamu Nishimura [1] Credit to Irving at Shining Road So far, only Kea and Nishimura have been knocked out of the tournament by sheer points, but by process of elimination, Toshiaki Kawada has been as well. The only possible way he could even be in contention would be if Kojima & Tanahashi draw, while he beats Muto, which would create a completely trainwreck scenario with four people at five points. In that scenario I have absolutely no idea who'd advance. Also eliminated by process of elimination is Triple Crown Champion Kensuke Sasaki. He's gone 1-1-2 this tournament, and is out of tournament matches. There's no possible way Sasaki can advance, as the winner of Suwama/Doering would be past him on points. Even if they drew, Doering would still have five points, beating Sasaki's four. Minoru Suzuki can win the tournament with an even six points only if A) Suwama beats Doering, and he beats Nishimura. The darkhorse of the block, Suwama can win the tournament if Suzuki loses to Nishimura, and Suwama beats Doering. Everything looks set up for the finals being Suwama/Tanahashi. But we'll see.
