2006-07 MLB Offseason Thread

From the Yankees rumor mill for the day: Melky Cabrera to Atlanta, Mike Gonzalez to New York, Adam LaRoche to Pittsburgh. Apparently Scott Proctor has been mentioned in this deal as well. Heard it on 1050 ESPN, here's the link from Yahoo/Rotowire Aquiring a dependable lefty for the pen is obviously a necessity, but I don't like giving up their two best bargaining chips (Since they are not dealing Wang, Cano, Hughes, etc) in one deal to get it. Proctor filled the role last year that Farnsworth couldn't, and Melky is a very good fourth outfielder, especially with the age/injury concerns in the starting three, I don't want to part with him. Ideally, Matsui would DH and Melky could play LF, but Giambi is too much of a butcher at first for that to be possible. -
Johnson was with the guy at a Chicago club when a fight brought out and his friend got shot.

Roy Halladay and AJ Burnett are a pretty damn good 1-2. Most teams don't even have that. -

It was a good decision for Vernon to take that deal. You really can't turn that kind of money down, and I don't think that he would get that much on the open market next offseason. I'm sure he would command a ton of coin, but $126 mil would have been a lot to leave on the table. If he were to get hurt this year after turning down that money he would never live it down. -

Hockey announcer on a clip: "Daisuke Matsuzaka is going to be a household name soon." ESPNews Guy: "He will if we have anything to say about it." -
1050 ESPN Radio says former Georgia DE / Bengals LB David Pollack needs to undergo surgery for his neck and it could end his career. It's a shame seeing as how much of a beast the guy was in college.

Is it just me or are the always trying to start a QB controversy? Garrard vs. Leftwich, Bledsoe vs. Romo, Green vs. Huard, and Grossman vs. Greise all this year alone. Not to mention in September when they were trying to stir up all that A-Rod vs. Joe Torre, Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, and the other 22 Yankees. -
I heard about the hunting trip. OK. I just want a picture of him holding up that pinstriped #46 for my wallpaper.

What's with the recent trend of only 3 guys getting invited to the Heisman presentation? I thought at least either Slaton or Rice would get an invite. -

I'm becoming increasingly tired with inspirational sports movies coming out. Remember the Titans, Radio, Glory Road, Coach Carter, The Rookie, For Love of the Game, Friday Night Lights, We Are Marshall.... -
LOVE the Pettitte signing. The Yankees would never give Clemens the perks that he wants like what he got in Houston.

They have been all over Romo since the season started. OMG T.O. LIKES ROMO MORE THAN BLEDSOE!!! was dominating in September before the guy ever threw a pass in 4 years in the pros. -

Hope this isn't true. But if it is, Igawa will end up turning out better than Matz. Write it down.

Not to turn to Dama Jr here, but I don't believe OU ever got any... love (I know we're all latent homosexuals here, but do we have to keep making fellatic references vis-a-vis the sports media?) during their big run earlier this decade. When they won the title in '00, the sports media was pretty much "meh" and for the next few years, as far as the sports media was concerned, the Big XII was still just Nebraska and Texas. To be fair though, I dunno where the whole "ESPN loves USC" thing comes from, especially considering ESPN's longtime noteriety for ignoring most of the goings on in the Pac-10 because it's "way the hell over there" Last year leading up to the Rose Bowl they had a series where they compared the 2005 USC squad to the collegiate greats of all time, and each of the "experts" picked '05 USC each time execpt one, I think it was '02 Ohio State. Plus, their unhealthy addiction to Reggie Bush, including the "Race for Reggie Bush," weekly comparisons of the NFL teams with the worst records. Thier draft coverage was awful as well: I recall them treating Mario Williams, the #1 OVERALL PICK, like an afterthought, as well Young, as the first QB taken, and spent a large majority of the down time talking about Bush (Who wasn't #1) and Leinart (Who had 9 guys ahead of him). -
