Spring college football practices are starting...

Based on what I've seen of him the past two years, I think that's entirely possible. Preseason Heisman campaigns don't mean shit anyway. Herein lies the problem though. Oklahoma is probably going to be seen on national TV maybe 3-4 times at the most (Oregon, Texas, and the Big 12 title game if they get there), while every one of Notre Dame's games is going to be on national TV, not to mention the fact that Quinn will be getting tons of pub from the national media throughout the season (ESPN, ABC, NBC, you name it, Dama if you thought Leinart and Bush's coverage was bad, wait until next year if Quinn is having a great year and ND is undefeated). I don't doubt Peterson's ability to put up gigantic numbers, but if Notre Dame goes 12-0 or 11-1 and Quinn has a great year, it'll be tough to beat him for the Heisman.

Did you have to listen to that idiot Maguire the past few seasons on SNF? Most people were probably hoping that he'd never be heard from again after the Three Morons breakup... Anyway, I'm beginning to think that Adrian Peterson is going to have to put together a superhuman-like season to have a shot at the Heisman, considering that the media has already kicked off the Quinn For Heisman campaign.
  3. Phillies lost another one to the Brewers last night. After starting the month off so well it's pretty much back to the same old shit. They're going to be far behind the Mets and Braves if they keep this up, and hopefully the axe will finally fall on ol' Cholly. Meanwhile, Jim Leyland has the Tigers in first place, but the Phillies get stuck with that fucking idiot Cholly instead of him. ::Sigh:: Reports coming out of Kansas City say that if the Royals don't get the Braves assistant GM, then they're going to talk to Ed Wade of all people. The Royals ownership must want to run off the rest of their fanbase... Big win on the recruiting trail for Nova this week as they got a committment from Scottie Reynolds, a 4-star guard that had originally committed to Oklahoma, but got out of his committment once Kelvin Sampson left. Nova beat out Michigan for Reynolds, who could possibly start at PG next year if Kyle Lowry stays in the draft. Also, 4-star guard Jeff Jones from nearby Drexel Hill, PA backed out of his committment to Maryland for the class of 2007 recruits, and Nova is thought to be a player in that race. Personally, I think Corey Stokes (highly touted NYC recruit, has size to play the 3 along with the 2) is a more important get than Jones is, but we'll see. Searching for a place to live at Nova next year is quite the chore. I've been using my free time on weekends to head over to the area looking for apartments or condos that could be considered cheap housing, which is pretty much an oxymoron on the Main Line. I think I found something decent though in a building called Radnor House Condos, which is basically housing for law students, other grad students, and professionals. Looks pretty nice, we'll see what happens.

    Random stuff

Picked up a good book today about the Big 5 called "The Big 5-0, The 50th Anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5" at the local Barnes & Noble. Very good read about the history of the Big 5 teams in the city (Nova, Temple, Penn, Saint Joe's, and LaSalle) and the games between them. Also talks about the old traditions of streamers being thrown after the first basket and the rollouts. The rollouts would usually be something witty, unless it was something from Saint Joseph's, which in that case it would be something dumb. Of course Nova had some of the best, including the classic "Patrick Ewing Can't Read This" rollout from a game against Georgetown in the mid 80s. Definitely worth the $25 if you're a college hoops fan, but it's really only avaliable in PA, NJ, and DE bookstores, but I'd imagine that you could get it online somewhere. Speaking of the retards from City Avenue(SJU), I'll do an entry soon about Nova's rivalry with them, and how SJU basically is little brother to Nova, which pisses them off a great deal, which is pretty funny. According to an article by Andy Katz on ESPN.com, the Big East is going to sign a new television deal, apparently one of the richest in the history of college athletics. Most of the new deal centers around basketball, as ESPN and CBS will expand their coverage of Big East basketball, which I guess will make up for the new Big Ten network being launched for Big Ten college sports, including basketball. There was also a blurb by Katz that Pitt's Aaron Gray's decision whether to stay in the draft or not will heavily influence the number of TV appearances that the Panthers will have next year. If he stays, Pitt is likely to be on national TV more, and if he doesn't, it means less appearances. I imagine that the teams that are considered contenders for the conference title (UConn, Louisville, Syracuse, Georgetown, Nova, Pitt) are going to get more of their games on national TV than ones that aren't. I've been finally forced back into going to the gym regularly after seeing how pudgy I was in my graduation photos. The beer gut that I had before is starting to disappear, and I'm starting to get more toned in my arms, chest, shoulders, and legs. Definitely looking good on that front, but I'd like to get the abs toned more.

5/27/06: Phillies, Nova recruiting, other thoughts

Nah, once I got into Villanova, I was set on going there. I actually did get into Pitt off of the waitlist, but by that time I had sent in my Nova deposit and withdrew from everywhere else.

Putting Maguire with Nessler and Greise will have only one redeeming factor, how long it takes for Greise to drop an audible "Will you please shut the fuck up?" on Maguire during a game. I also wonder what exactly Brad Nessler did to piss off the higher-ups at ABC to first lose the lead announcing job for the NBA on ABC, then get passed up for Musburger for Saturday night ABC games, then get stuck with Maguire.

    1980 National League Championship Series

Definitely the greatest game in Phillies history, even if I wasn't alive for it. One of my personal favorites was Game 5 of the 1993 NLCS when Dykstra hit the home run in the 10th off Wohlers which won the game and ultimately the series. Seeing Jimmy Carter sitting in his seat all depressed put the exclamation point on it.

I absolutely fucking HATE that Sweet 16 show.

Spring college football practices are starting...

ABC has decided to destroy one of their best college football announcing teams by putting Paul Maguire in with Brad Nessler and Bob Griese. Couldn't they just keep Patrick and Maguire, two of the Three SNF Morons, together instead of wrecking another team? Another alteration to the Musburger drinking game, Jack Arute won't be the sideline reporter for the Saturday night ABC games.

Actually less expensive for Michigan-OSU and USC-ND than the PSU-ND tickets.

Spring college football practices are starting...

It's likely that one would have to give both arms and both legs to go to the PSU-ND game in September. I saw a pair of tickets for sale on eBay which was at $1,600, gonna be a good one.

    College Hoops: 4/13/2006 - Midnight Madness (10/16/2006)

Seems like Sampson was tryin to emulate that cheatin' SOB Barry Switzer. I don't know if IU will actually fire Sampson for this, I'd imagine that recruiting won't be great for the first year.

    NBA Conference Finals

Phoenix wins and takes home-court. I don't really mind who wins, but I'm pulling for Phoenix a little more due to Nash and Tim Thomas (gotta support the Nova guys.)

    TWiB #8: 5/22 - 5/28

Ya know, I was wiling to cut Manuel some slack during the big winning streak because he finally criticized some of the players... Now....I hope to God that he gets canned. He should write a book on misusing relievers. Shame too, because Bell's performance tonight is being wasted...

    NBA Offseason Thread

Praying to God, Allah, Yahweh, whoever that Marcus Williams somehow is at #13 for the Sixers. If not, then probably Mardy Collins. Sixers need a tall PG that can play defense in the worst way....

    NBA Offseason Thread

I'd be excited if the Sixers won the lottery, but not sure what Billy would do, though the last time he was in it he did pick Iguodala, and if it weren't for Larry Brown's overriding influence, he and Tony DiLeo would've taken Nowitzki or Pierce.

    College Hoops: 4/13/2006 - Midnight Madness (10/16/2006)

He must've liked Sampson a lot along with the class that was supposed to be coming in, but must've not wanted to follow him to IU. I saw in some preliminary rankings that OU's class was supposed to be Top 5-Top 10, I'd imagine that it's fallen since losing those recruits.

    College Hoops: 4/13/2006 - Midnight Madness (10/16/2006)

Reynolds chose Villanova today over Michigan, if Antonio Pena qualifies then Nova's got a nice class this year. I'm quite happy about this as he could possibly start at PG next year or SG if Lowry comes back. I also now cannot wait to see them whip Saint Hoe's again next year, since the Holy War is in the Pavilion in 2006-2007.

    College Hoops: 4/13/2006 - Midnight Madness (10/16/2006)

I can see why the fans would be mad because that class was touted as one of the best in OU history, but you can't really blame Capel since the kids committed to play for Sampson, and usually nothing is final until the kids sign the LOI.
