WWE General Discussion - December 2007

On the "sports entertainment" front, why does the Super Bowl have halftime entertainment? Why does minor league baseball feature between innings entertainment. Yes, the wrestling is most important. But more and more entertainment ventures branch out nowadays. I could see the mindset where fan A watches with non-fan B. The non-fan is not a fan of wrestling but enjoys something else on the show. He/she continues to watch. Eventually, they become fans of the product itself.

How did you find out that wrestling was not "real"?

Revelation #1: Wrestling is predetermined and fake, not real. Revelation #2: They sometimes "fake" it by legitimately beating the snot out of each other. I think the second is probably worse to find out than the first.

If Mark Prior wants to inflate his stats, taking the mound would be a good first step.

    HOF Profiles: Tim Raines

For best game a nod to the game mentioned in his B-Ref sponsorship. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NY...198705020.shtml Not only a grand slam in the 10th, but the Expos' rally in the 9th started on Raines' infield single. Or maybe this game, Raines scored all five times to the plate, hit a HR and stole two bases in a 9-7 win. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MO...198708130.shtml

    Gino Hernandez

Wasn't Ted already the Million Dollar gimmick before Gino's death? I think if he went to the WWF, he would've had a Ric Flair type role, from what I've seen from him in his WCCW stuff. Gino died in February '86. The Million Dollar Man debuted in late Spring/Summer of '87.

    Gino Hernandez

It's funny, I was just thinking about what Gino might've done, and my second thought was that he'd be in Rick Rude's spot in the WWF. First option, perhaps the Million Dollar Man gimmick?

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

There are things that they could do better, but I honestly think WWE is ahead of any other promotion in these matters. And honestly, the concussion stuff isn't so much the danger of concussions as much as people want to believe Chris Benoit did it because he was brain damaged and not because he made a conscious choice. I mean seriously, he knew well enough not to injure a wrestler in a worked match but not enough to not murder his wife and child? That's silly.

Apparently not. I have seen no news to that effect.

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

One case of anecdotal evidence, no quotes from doctors on the specifics or anything. I know concussions are bad, but c'mon now. You can't take a case like this and then present it as such overwhelming evidence that your debaters are worthy of scorn.

So Fire Pro R is back

Something super cool. If you let the intros go, at one point it will do a quick montage of all the wrestlers in the game, with your own CAWs thrown in!

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

With all due respect, that's one person with a history of violent behavior in his NHL days. It's not like we're magically transforming some model citizen into a crazed maniac here.

That's a bit unexpected, but at least Taguchi improves the club. I wonder if this is a precursor to an Akinori Otsuka signing.

    Year End Review

Wrestler of the year: John Cena Worst wrestler of the year: Most Improved Wrestler: Randy Orton (ring skills were always there but ring generalship has come along strong) Most Underachieving Wrestler: Kane (not sure quite how to define this). He has talent but goes largely unused. Best Tag Team: Hardy Boys. Honorable mention to Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. I just can't vote against the Hardys, they're the best team of our generation. Worst Tag Team: Deuce and Domino Best Heel: Randy Orton Best Face: Jeff Hardy Best Diva: Beth Phoenix Worst Diva: Ashley Most Improved Diva: Beth Match of the Year: John Cena vs. Umaga, Royal Rumble Worst Match of the Year: Womens' Battle Royal, Summerslam Quote of the Year: "She's saying she WANTS to have your illegitimate son." -Coachman explains Mae Young's presence to Vince McMahon at Summerslam. Best Comeback: None. Mark out moment of the year: For me, seeing Dusty Rhodes, Mick Foley and Roddy Piper make live appearances at Raw in Wilkes-Barre. Funniest moment of the year: Dance party at Wrestlemania Best brand: Haven't seen enough to make a judgment. Worst brand: Ditto. Best PPV: Wrestlemania, honorable mention for the Rumble. Worst PPV: Unforgiven Best Feud: John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels Worst Feud: Bobby Lashley vs. Vince McMahon Worst Moment of the Year: Benoit of course.

I don't bother with it at all.

So Fire Pro R is back

I like that the wrestlers aren't so detailed in appearance that you need to make a perfect copy. It took me maybe two minutes to create a good Fred Blassie clone, just give him the skin and hair color and black boots and you're set. The only thing that really irks me are the attributes. I wish they had auto-settings to make it quicker.

    The OAO WWE DVD Thread

Pillman was a maniac. Tenta was just a nice guy who wrestled. You can't make an interesting documentary about that. Ricky Steamboat has the same problem. Great matches, but what do you put in the documentary?

So Fire Pro R is back

I create my own guys, it's not too difficult when you get a bit of practice with the CAW system, and aren't too picky about the little details. Logos I'd be hopeless, not even going to try that.

    MLB Off-season Thread

Of course. Fox went to All-Star games in 12 seasons ans started seven of them. He often placed in MVP voting and won once, and he won multiple Gold Gloves. At the plate he was the third best second basemen at the plate, and he smoked those guys in the field. Probably the best second baseman of his time, though the guy who replaced him in Houston was pretty good too. Nellie Fox was basically Joe Dimaggio if he had no power. Actually most of the guys on that list were good, especially as leadoff men. Unfortunately they tended to have short careers. Edit: And Czech, I'm up early because I'm going to work. It's an hour earlier there. What's your excuse for being awake at this hour?

    MLB Divisional Series Thread

Don't have time to do a full writeup right now, but wanted to get this started. Colorado Rockies vs. Philadelphia Phillies Chicago Cubs vs. Arizona Diamondbacks New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox This should be a fantastic postseason, both league races are wide open.

    The Pursuit of Perfection

I don't get how being undefeated adds to the pressure in the playoffs. There's no pressure to win if you're 14-2? Fans will still shit on you if you fail.

    MLB Off-season Thread

I think it's a good deal, because I'm of the opinion that Hamilton can not stick long term in center field. With Jay Bruce coming up, Hamilton is expendable. In a best case scenario, Cincy now has a good lineup and a potential future rotation starting with Aaron Harang, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez and Homer Bailey. IF things break right, they could steal the Central this season or next.
