Check it out..... http://thesmartmarks.com/artman/publish/article_1539.shtml I make a constructive argument for Edgar Martinez, rip into Bud Selig, and rip into Phillies management.

We've got some good series coming up this weekend. The Twins visit the Cleveland Indians. If the Indians sweep, the impossible occurs and the Indians will share first place in the Central. The Giants visit Philadelphia for an important Wild Card battle (fire Bowa), and first place clubs meet as the Cardinals visit the Atlanta Braves.

A three game sweep at the hands of the SF Giants. They have GOT to fire Bowa at this point.

Kyle Farnsworth is more of a liability than Sosa.

Yes. He's a ticking time bomb. The Cubs are much better off with Hawkins. -

Not that I pay attention to the Cubs, but this sounds just like when the Mariners had Jose Mesa back in 2000. Everytime he came into a game any Mariner fans I knew would start yelling "Fuck it's Mesa we're gonna lose." As a Phillies fan, I know the pain. -
We will see. My prediction looks bold at the moment, but I think they will get the hang of the international game as the tournament progresses.

A thread to discuss tonight's Olympic Ceremonies.

I think if you were to take the question literally, Bonds is the best player not in the Hall of Fame. You referenced Pete Rose, who is probably the best retired player not in the Hall, but is ineligible. The purpose of the list as a whole is to evaluate HOF candidates amongst other candidates.

By the way, Baseball Almanac keeps a list of the replacement players.

I do not know the answer on the part of video games. I do know MVP Baseball 2004 did not include the scabs, so there is some ambiguity there. And Czech, Bonds declined to sign onto the MLBPA's marketing contract, instead opting to cut his own deals. He is still part of the Union itself.

Watching rowing an hour ago, caught the name of the commentator. Randy Rosenbloom!

Big man vs. small wrestler isn't necessarily a styles clash. There's a natural story dynamic at work, and in the case of a Hart/Diesel type matchup, the wrestlers should have little trouble integrating it into the match. I think Funk/RVD is the best example given of a clash of wrestling styles. To add my own, Shane Douglas vs. Pit Bull II might be another good example. Its often cited as a match which involved different methods of match calling colliding.

Fuck football. That's all I ever see on Comcast as it is.

Yes, they will get a medal.

If you let the teams play a few more games, EVERY team would lose. The US losing to Mexico does NOT mean Mexico is a better team. Play that game ten times, and the US wins seven. Given the nature of chance in baseball, a single game is a ridiculous assessment of talent. All the single elimination format does is let inferior teams into the Olympics over superior teams.

We've got Philly @ New England, NY Jets @ New Orleans, and Kansas City @ NY Giants.

The point is that baseball is a sport ill-suited for single game playoffs. A best-of-three series is more suitable.

Fifth loss of the last six games. Thome's day-to-day with a shoulder injury. This season is just about done.
-
Curious though, which position has the most Gold Glovers in the Hall of Fame? Probably the outfield, although its hard to judge since the voting makes no distinction for LF, CF, RF. Shortstop probably leads at a single position, with four HOFers and 23 Gold Gloves between them.
-
Essentially, the qualifying tournament was single elimination, which is a TERRIBLE idea for a sport where the worst team in MLB history still won 25% of their games.
-
The question references eligible players only. Otherwise the answer would be Bonds.

A pennant is winning the league. A pennant race is the effort getting there, which includes the regular season. It used to be one of the primary events, but its been watered down thanks to the wild card. If such is the case, Seattle has no pennant. Indians won in '95. The question involves pennant races. Even if the chase is ultimately futile, a player's individual achievements in such an endeavour deserve analyzation. In this case, Seattle overcame a double-digit lead to win the division. Because they won the division, the Mariners earned MILLIONS in extra revenue thanks to the postseason. Martinez was largely responsible for that. I think he's referring to where you said Ok, fair enough. I should have stated "won the division."

Mattingly's OBP was also 65 points lower than Martinez's. Edgar wipes the floor with him in terms of hitting, and defense doesn't get first basemen into the Hall. So which position do Gold Gloves count in? Or does defense not matter? The point is that defense at first base is not as important as defense anywhere else. If you were to rank the defensive positions, 1B would rank eighth, ahead of pitching. Look at the players who have won multiple Gold Gloves at first. George Scott, Vic Power, Don Mattingly, Keith Hernandez, Steve Garvey, Wes Parker, Blll White. None of them are in the Hall. In fact, gold gloves have been issued for 50 years, and only ONE Gold Glove winner at first base, Eddie Murray, has entered the Hall. How valuable is defense at first? Its miniscle compared to offense.
