    NBA Offseason News and Moves

High scoring is not the only indicator of the quality of play. Are the scores low because of poor offense, or good defense? It is hard to say. Theoretically, the better play becomes, the more scores drift southward, as it becomes harder to score points. Whether game scores are close is a better indicator of game quality.

For god sakes just shut the fuck up. You've singlehandedly managed to ruin all intelligent conversation on this forum for the sake of bitching about a first place team. Nobody gives a damn.

Another candidate for comeback player of the year: Jermaine Dye.

I don't think so, although I thought there was one, I can't find it. Catfish Hunter does have a plain cap though.

Giambi is hitting 169/299/355 with no one on base (17 walks in 143 appearances). He is hitting 330/470/538 with runners on base (24 walks in 115 appearances). Aren't statistics a beautiful thing?

His best case is that his career stats are very similar to Willie Stargell's, in my view. I'd love to see him come up with a split cap. McGriff has been a classy player, and I can't see him siding with a single organization.

Keep in mind those are HOF averages, not minimums.

Keep in mind baseball-reference doesn't keep current stats. He's got another two HRs on his resume. Not big at all, but just something to keep in mind when using the site. Also, the HOF Monitor is meant to predict voting patterns, and is not a tool itself in evaluating a player's HOF worthiness.

    Why ESPN sucks

Let us not forget the upcoming Pete Rose movie. How can you report objective news about Rose while producing a (likely) exploitive, made-for-TV movie about him?

In a thread at SNKT, I argued that he should be in the HOF. But he is very much on the fence, and I could definately be convinced otherwise. Its hard to say, and assuming he retires under 500 home runs, I cannot endorse his candidacy whole-heartedly.

The Devil Rays are considering parting ways with Fred McGriff. As his skills are eroding, he might not reach 500 career home runs after all. So I'm going to add McGriff's 10 postseason home runs to his record, and consider him a proud member of the 500 home run club after all.

On a side note, this was a perfect exhibition on the evils of the save stat. What's the point of holding back your best reliever for when you have the lead? That's when you can most afford to give up a run.

The Cubs still have a good rotation, and they didn't have Prior that long anyway. I'd still call them Wild Card favorites.

As for Mark Prior, he accumulated no pitcher abuse points during his tenure back, so Dusty can't really be blamed for this one. Either its minor, or they rushed him back too soon.

Jacobsen's 28, so he has no real upside. Right now is as good as he is going to be. He's tearing the cover off the ball in AAA, hitting 312/423/658. He's a good fill in for the Mariners, but he's probably not their first basemen for of the future.

Big stretch coming up for the Phillies, as they play four against the Mets in Shea, two against the Braves in Atlanta, and two against the Marlins at home.

What's the point of even printing that? The Chicago teams surfaced in speculation. That is pretty much saying, "I've heard alot of trade rumors." Which is no more than we know already.

    Official MLB All-Star Game Thread

It was different, because they were to be located on game equipment. And judging by public reaction, I'm not the only one outraged by it. Generally, what pisses me off about Selig are the lies. He told us baseball lost $500 million in one year. Every independant source from coast-to-coast refuted that claim, but Selig just kept blathering about it. He continually claimed competitive balance was a problem, when baseball is more competitive than any sport in this country. When this "problem" fixed itself, he claimed, and still claims, it was due to his solutions. Bud Selig has done nothing to improve the game. Then its Selig's job to sell the game, and sell it to a better network. That's absolutely true. That doesn't excuse Pohlad however. Or in some cases, the states. In any case, Selig continually lied about how new ballparks were necessary for teams to remain competitive. Hell, this year he's still whining about how the A's need a new park to stay competitive. How many wins does he need to get bludgened over the head with? Not one free agency departure, with the possible exception of Keith Foulke, has damaged the Athletics.
