Here's Edinson Volquez over the last three years. 2005: 140 2006: 154.1 2007: 178.2 2008: 170+ Turns out Volquez actually has 4-5 starts left. So under the standard you mention, 200 innings pitched would be acceptable.

There has always been some level of pitching attrition. How much of that is workload and not is hard to say. Are they sudden injuries or is it wear and tear over time? And guys who are relief pitchers who throw less than 100 innings a year also run into the same problems. I think most experts would say you can increase a pitcher's innings by some increment. If they are throwing an extreme amount more, that's a problem. In this case, we're talking an increase of 30-40 more innings, I doubt that's extreme. All I advocate here is that there is little harm in letting Volquez take his regular turn through the season.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how simply resting a guy will improve his chances of not getting hurt (well, besides the obvious risk of sudden injury). Six starts left at most, if he goes seven in all of them that's an extra 42 innings, giving him something in the neighborhood of 210 innings. That is NOT an extreme workload. Twenty pitchers have completed 210+ innings at the age of 24, quite a few of them turned out to be very durable.

    Yankee Competition, Tiebreakers and Playoffs

Final Standings of pool play. Giants 6-4 Dodgers 6-4 Highlanders 6-4 Yankees 6-4 Bridegrooms 4-6 Gothams 2-8 With four teams tied, a tiebreaker is actually easy to set up. Teams seeded one and four will compete, along with teams seeded two and three. The winners will play for the top spot, the loser of that getting the second spot. The losers of the first game will play for third place and the final playoff entry. The Giants pick up the first seed thanks to their 4-2 record against the other three teams. The Dodgers will get home field against the Highlanders due to better run differential. Hera are the tiebreak matchups. Yankees (Hunter) @ Giants (Gomez) Highlanders (Ruffing) @ Dodgers (Pettitte) Giants 3, Yankees 2 Dodgers 6, Highlanders 3 Dodgers 6, Giants 1 Yankees 5, Highlanders 2 First round is Giants vs. Yankees, winner battles the Dodgers. Both series will be contested best of five. Earle Combs hit .481/.526/.750, taking MVP honors. Jimmy Key will take best pitcher honors with two wins, 23 innings pitched and a 2.74 ERA. Yankees 3, Giants 4 Yankees 1, Giants 4 Giants 3, Yankees 4 Giants 8, Yankees 2 Giants win series 3 games to 1. Giants 2, Dodgers 15 Giants 1, Dodgers 10 Dodgers 9, Giants 10 (13 Innings) Dodgers 4, Giants 6 Giants 8, Dodgers 9 (10 Innings) Dodgers win series 3 games to 2.

Giants 2 Dodgers 15 WP: Cone, LP: Reynolds Five RBIs for Bobby Murcer, complete game victory for David Cone. Giants 1 Dodgers 10 WP: Shawkey, LP: Mays Tony Lazzeri with three RBIs in this effort. Complete game for Bob Shawkey. Dodgers 9 Giants 10 13 Innings WP: Duren, LP: Akers The best game of the tournament? The Dodgers took the lead with four in the seventh and held a three-run lead in the ninth. A two out error by Goose Gossage extended the inning and gave Moose Skowron a chance to hit a three run home run to tie the game. Gil McDougald hit the walk-off home run in the 13th. Dodgers 4 Giants 6 WP: Gomez, LP: Moore, Sv: Duren Charlie Keller drove in the tying run and Mickey Mantle the go-ahead run in the 8th. This series will go to a fifth and deciding game.

    This Week in Baseball 9/1 - 9/7

Phillies down 9-5 to the Nationals in the 8th. If this holds, that's two out of three dropped to the worst team in the league. Three back of the Mets, if the Phillies don't take two this weekend it puts them in a serious bind. And no, I don't think we can count on the Mets blowing a seven game lead again.

Eric Bruntlett (.224/.304/.300) is the starting right fielder tonight. I figure Stairs is benched against the lefty starter and the Phillies at least want defense with a non-strikeout pitcher (Joe Blanton) on the mound. That eliminates Mike Cervenak and Andy Tracy. Why not play Golson, who despite the K's at least has pop and is a good defensive outfielder, see what he can do?

This week is Big Bubba Rogers no-selling the chairshot. And damned if Dusty Rhodes doesn't look like a bitch needing Magnum T.A. to come down with weapons to save him from a one-on-one confrontation. Prior to that, I'm sure that suplex from Baby Doll is the most embarrassing bump Randy Mulkey ever took.

Forgot about Brian McCann. So that's three times in a year where the Phillies have taken a catcher out of the game. And last year Utley took down Russell Martin last year with a shoulder tackle as well that was pretty bad. Players are getting hurt because of this bullshit mentality. You mention that the catcher wants the play. If you want to take him down, face him head up like a man. Utley dove towards the man's leg.

    1. Because there's a promising young catcher on his way to the hospital because Chase Utley attempted to use the flying shoulderblock as a slide. 2. This is the second time I've seen a Phillie take a catcher out of the game this year, both on plays where the runner was out.

So now Utley may have injured Jesus Flores. This shit where everyone thinks it's good baseball to attempt to steal a run by taking out the catcher has got to stop.
