Well, their other options include Marquis Grissom, so they probably are desperate.

Just a random thought while looking at the Mariners page. Julio Mateo gaves up more home runs (14) than walks (13). You don't see that every day.

I honestly give little consideration to rumors until they become official. Otherwise, its an exercise in futility. In this case, however, Tejada would represent a huge upgrade for the M's, particularly if it meant moving Guillen to third and plugging that hole in their lineup. Dodgers resign Robin Ventura for a year. Signing are coming fast and furious this evening thanks to the arbitration deadline.

Just off the transaction wire. Giants resign J.T. Snow for one year.

A nasty case of "Yankee-itis", causing him to lose critical games.

Rest assured, Kaz is different. He's a career .309 hitter in Japan. He's hit 30+ home runs the last two years, and he has 306 career stolen bases. And he's only 28.

FoxNews and ESPN are reporting that the Mets will sign Kaz Matsui tomorrow.

I'll give it a "bold" ranking.

Lopez is still a free agent.

That about covers the story. Bell wasn't given the right fielder's job, so he threatened not to give any effort. The Pirates essentially called his bluff, and Bell never again played professional baseball. Another Derek Bell moment. As a rookie with the Toronto Blue Jays, Bell was subject to a rookie rib. The Blue Jays announced a giveaway promotion, and another player drove Bell's van onto the field as the winning prize.

Cubs resign Grudzielanek for a year. Weren't many options available, so a decent signing. At the very least, they avoid the rabidly deteriorating Fernando Vina.

Its an old fashioned title chase program. You really can't go wrong.

Kind of like another team that's choked three years in a row, and hasn't won a world series all century.

Like Mariano Rivera blowing a save in game 7?

I'd go Austin/Hogan. You have two of the biggest draws in wrestling history, who have NEVER faced each other. For once, fuck the star ratings.

I think a real GM would have a tough time making this trade fly. That that it concerns me, but be aware that there are some copyright issues involved with reposting the insider articles.

Two words: Travis Chapman. If Chapman isn't MLB ready, then I see no problem playing Polanco at third. Heck, he can play short if needed. As far as the trades go, I'm high on Kim, so I wouldn't mind seeing the Phillies pick him up at all.

Won't Pudge be ineligible to sign with the Marlins until May 1st?

Still, by whatever method he missed 3-6 starts.

His Fenway ERA is 6.04, in six games (four of which were starts). Only one of those games came within the last three years however, which he won. His peripherals look great in any case, which indicates to me the ERA is a result of bad luck and small sample size. In any case, 25 innings, many of which came his first three years as an Oriole, are hardly an indicator of the future. So you're right, its not the fairest way to look at it. Keep in mind these don't include the postseason. Against the Yankees, he's pitched 8 games, 9 IP, with a 4.00 ERA. That includes a 3:10 BB/K ratio, which is good. You'd want better, but that an indication that he's not getting murdered out there.

An average pitcher makes 32-36 starts in a season. A #1 should be somewhere around 35. Pedro made 29, so he missed around 3-6 starts during the season. Schilling's injuries last year were non-arm related. A batted ball struck him, and he had an appendectomy. Nothing there to indicate unusual future problems. He hasn't topped a 4.00 ERA since 1994. Wakefield's got a 2:1 K/BB ratio. He's an innings eater, and a good guy to have on the back end of a staff. I'm a big believer in Byung Hyun Kim. You have to remember he was only 22 during that fateful World Series. He's got a career 3.24 ERA (which, btw, equals Vazquez's ERA last year) and he's got a career K/9 ratio over 9 (K rate is generally the best indicator of future pitching success). I actually agree with you on Lowe. He doesn't strike out enough batters, and his walk rate was up last year.

George Steinbrenner in desperation will buy a Baby Ruth candy bar from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000. Not willing to admit the mistake, he installs the candy bar in left field. Despite a poor zone rating, the candy bar's fielding is still widely praised by the NY press.

Question for Yankee fans (specifically Anglesault). Is there a better third baseman the team could've gotten this upcoming season?

Three guys (so far) drop 20+ pts for my team tonight!

But then who will the Sox get to replace Manny?
