Autograph signings...and the insane prices
EVIL~! alkeiper replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Sports
I have a hat I take to Red Barons games (Phillies affiliate) and I collect autographs on it. That's the extent of my collecting. No one autograph is really worth going out of my way for. I'll never sell them in any case. -
Surprised at the lack of reaction the Pierzynski trade got. Lets see..... Giants get AJ Pierzynski. Pierzynski hit 312/360/464 at the age of 26. Really good numbers, and consistant with his production of the last four years. He turns 27 soon, so don't be surprised if he busts through with a big year. Twins get Boof Bonser, Joe Nathan and someone else. Nathan broke through as a middle reliever, but its nothing to get overly excited about, I think. He could close for some teams. Bonser's a decent prospect, but walks too many guys for my taste. Its obvious the Twins traded Pierzynski to make room for Mauer down the line. The Giants won this trade. They have plenty of pitching in the system, so losing a guy or two won't hurt. Best of all, they make a serious upgrade at catcher.

Ok then. Babe Ruth corked his bat. Want to strip him of his records as well? Yeah, I'm crying my eyes out. Look, Bonds doing this doesn't hurt the sports fan, it hurts the sports dealerships. What's so bad about that?
-
Yep, I remembered seeing that game on ESPN Classic, but I forgot who slid into who.
-
Even in my mark days, I loved their ECW matches.

Also go to the chapters listing on disc one. Highlight Bruno/Zbyszko, and press right twice. It brings you to a segment with Bruno and Vince giving commentary over tape of the angle setting up the match, with Bruno explaining his side of the story and building up the cage match.

Wrong incident. You're thinking of Choi colliding with Wood along the baseline. This incident occured when Prior ran into Marcus Giles near second base.
-
Perhaps, but I can make an argument that the only reason the Twins were in a division race in the first place was their abysmal first half, particularly by their pitching. Its ultimately an argument no one can win really. I mean, how DO you judge managerial performance?
-
Don't forget Brent Abernathy.
-
I miss the days when Graig Nettles simply sliding into third resulted in a fist fight with George Brett.
-
How does that mean they don't have as much money as they claim? Cruz had an OBP of .269 last year. I wouldn't take Cruz for the league minimum. Hell, I wouldn't take him for free. The Orioles would've been absolutely stupid to take Cruz back. I'd take Abernathy before those three guys. At least Abernathy has time to get better.

I've made many speeches about how the MVP shouldn't have to come from a winning team, and I don't see why the manager of the year can't make the playoffs. If we disqualify all but 4 managers right off the bat, then the award really loses its luster, because all you do is reward the manager who got the best players to manage.
-
Eckersley's MVP in '92 was one of the worst years ever for the award. No closer should garner the MVP, IMO. With that said, Gagne actually led pitchers in Win Shares, so I see no problem with the closer winning the Cy Young this year.

There's your answer right there in the article. Personally, I feel cheating in sports is no way a new phenominon, and it doesn't diminish the records and accomplishments of today's athletes. Hopefully though, this starts MLB on the road to a cleaner sport.

You know you're watching Larry Brown coach when the Pistons score 85 pts in an overtime game.
-
Urbina's too expensive for a team that already has a closer, in my view.
-
Hawkins would kick serious ass. Hasegawa and Leskanic are decent, but walk too many guys. Baez is a good idea. Kevin Millwood won't get a five year contract anywhere. Teams are learning their lesson from pitchers. Royce Clayton? Alan Trammell would do a better job.
-
Not really. After 162 games you get a pretty good idea of who the best team is.

Mind telling us what sport it is? I assume basketball.

If nothing else, Pena's season allowed the Royals to keep Mike Sweeney. He had an out clause if the Royals failed to clear .500 this year and next. It's debateable how much credit should be given to managers for winning seasons. After all, the players are responsible for most of the success. No manager could've saved the Detroit Tigers this year. Brilliant managers one year (ex. Larry Bowa, 2001) look downright foolish the next. For the voters, what matters is exceeding expectations. I think the awards have little to do with actual managing.

Iverson actually is among the league leaders in assists. Malone racks up a few, and my other guys earn enough assists to get by.
-
Does it really matter who's #3 and #4? Agreed on Choi. The Cubs already let Bobby Hill get away, and Dusty Baker has an annoying habit of not playing anyone under 30.
-
Iverson drops another 40 pts.

Steinbrenner sticks head up ass again

Well, they apparently didn't think Berroa was good enough. They're wrong, IMO, but at least they followed the rules. You can make a case that Berroa wasn't in the top three. -
To wrap up the loose ends on the coaching front, the Yankees made Luis Sojo the third base coach, and have named Roy White as their first base coach. White is probably the most underrated Yankee in history.
