Maybe Ted Williams is writing..... http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-t...ov=ap&type=lgns

I've always thought contraction was a terrible idea. The dilution of talent is always an issue, but I think there's enough talent to go around. Remember, more and more international talent is growing in the talent pool. The thing is, the ill will caused to the two teams you take baseball away from greatly alienates that fan base. And a sport should never contract unless their in serious financial straits. Contraction is a sure sign that your business is failing. Baseball doesn't need that image.

Maybe the surgery's to have super cyborg replacement knees, enabling him to leap heights of 12'. Oh well, at least Grant Hill is still available.

After Cecil Fielder, every time a player came back from Japan, people thought he would break out.

Man I hate One and Only threads.
-
That's because it wasn't started as a playoff thread, it was started well before the playoffs. I think the World Series is a championship unto itself, with its own rich history. As such, it deserves its own thread. I don't think it HURTS anyone to have a World Series thread. The discussion was starting to flow.
-
Its funny to see team moves that almost happened. The Giants almost moved to Minnesota before they moved to San Francisco. And the St. Louis Cardinals almost moved to Milwaukee, before the Browns moved to Baltimore.
-
That doesn't change anything. I don't bs much about stuff on this board, but I think I have a legitimate gripe here. I think its perfectly ok to start a new thread considering its an entirely new round. Hell, its the WORLD SERIES> Nobody rememberts the league championships. Its all about the big title. There should've been separate threads for each series.
-
Since when was this a One and Only thread?
-
Its easier than you think. Look back at the comparison in the articles. The D'backs claimed $33 million more in losses than they really had. The Blue Jays claimed an extra $20 million as well.
-
That still doesn't explain the other 12 instances where MLB lied. The problem is, its easy to mask profits. For example, lets say the Chicago Tribune, who owns the Cubs, also operate a parking lot near the stadium. They charge for parking on game days. This is clearly a team related profit, yet they might report it as a separate figure, thus keeping it off the Cubs' books.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/200...403pappas.shtml One of Doug Pappas' excellent aricles on baseball finances. Scroll down to where he references Forbes Magazines list of operating profits, where they show that the Pittsburgh Pirates have *gasp* shown a profit.

I ask again. Where does it say teams are losing money? MLB's figures aren't worth the paper they're written on.
-
Two words for Tejada. Bobby Crosby.

Felix Heredia came off waivers. ANY other team that wanted him would have a choice before the Yankees.

Here's my thoughts on what should happen. The labor contract runs until 1006, so obviously nothing will happen before then. At that point, the Yankees will fall back in line, as their high priced players age, and the sabermetric revolution in Boston and Toronto picks up steam. I just don't think baseball should take such a huge step unless there's a SERIOUS problem. There's competition out there, so I think baseball's ok.

I can't do one, because my head would explose from the logic gaps.

St. Louis has a high payroll in every sport they have a team... ...and it's considered one of the biggest sports towns in America. That's not a small market, dillweed. No need for personal attacks. St. Louis has a smaller population compared to other baseball cities.
-
Here's a serious question. If baseball had a salary cap, what would stop the Yankees from turning into baseball's answer to the Lakers?
-
There's a big difference between "market" and "payroll." St. Louis is a small market, but has a fairly large payroll.
-
According to every independant analysis (including Forbes magazine), baseball is NOT losing money. Its called tricky accounting. Baseball teams are making plenty of money. BASEBALL isn't, but individual teams ARE. That's why you need profit sharing. No they aren't. I'd like to see a single report that says baseball teams are losing money that DON'T use MLB's "numbers."
-
except that they don't have as much money? Why do the Yankees have more money? And if its New York, then why don't the Mets have this money?
-
How about this one. How many series have the other 4 of the top 5 large payroll teams have won the World Series?
-
As for the yankees spending, there's NOTHING preventing other teams from using the same business model.
-
The Yankees had a huge three year run, built off their farm system. Over the last three years, they haven't dominated. They've been in highly competitive games. Unless the Yankees are winning every series in 4-5 games, I don't see the problem there. And I truly don't believe that a team can survive on free agents. Besides, the Yankees lose Clemens after this year. Pettitte's a free agent, and Wells is 40. They may run into problems yet.
