According to every independant analysis (including Forbes magazine), baseball is NOT losing money. Its called tricky accounting. Baseball teams are making plenty of money.
-
Like I pointed out earlier. All the losing teams are caused by incompetance, not economics.
-
Like Minnesota? And Oakland? I'm opening a separate thread for this.
-
Its not the Yankees. Its that there's no story. I'd say there's enough uncertainty. Look at the Marlins. As for the Pirates, maybe if they didn't give Kevin Young $6.5 Million a year, they'd be a better team.
-
Yeah, because baseball isn't exciting anymore. Seriously, what does a salary cap do to improve baseball?
-
The blame is on Grady Little. If Pedro says "no," then he's labeled as a quitter. In Ken Burns' documentary, negro league player Buck O'Neill (one of baseball's all time great guys) mentions Casey Stengel's knack for taking his pitchers out.
-
Probably sometime after 1980, or 1986. 1980, because that's when the Phillies finally won (last original franchise to win the Series), or 1986, when the Sox blew a 3 run lead with no one on base and two outs.
-
Sorry for the delay guys. The Pocono Poison select Kenny Thomas, of the Philadelphia 76ers.
-
Can Clemens last another game? Can Pedro become a Sox legend? Can the Red Sox beat the curse? All these answers and more tonight!!
-
As for the Cubs/Marlins, I'd like to place the blame squarely on Dusty Baker's criminal misuse of his pitchers. Wood had nothing left in the tank last night, and Prior was used far beyond his limit last night.

God help me, I'd actually cheer for the Yankees. At least they feel like a world champion. Anyone else ponder that we're one game away from seeing another all wild card World Series?
-
One thing people forget about Buckner. The game was TIED. The Red Sox already blew the game before Mookie Wilson hit that grounder. Even if Buckner makes the play, the Sox only have a 50/50 chance to win the game. And the Mets had a superior bullpen. As for Boston fans, the sabermetric revolution has brought your team within 1 game of the World Series, further than they've gone since 1986. Embrace it.

I was shocked that Lakers fanboy MrJ picked LeBron James when PG Gary Payton was available.
-
God damnit I love baseball.

WOW

Off topic, but my advice is to find a short girlfriend. That way, its big by proportion. As for the game, the Cubs have nine innings to come back. They're not finished by a longshot.
-
Thundersticks? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-
And could the timing have been any better?
-
Oh please. The curse effects the WORLD SERIES. The Championship Series has a reverse effect. Just look at the 86 ALCS.
-
How awesome is the setup for tomorrow? Roger Clemens is starting, in Yankee Stadium, against the Red Sox. He's retiring after the season, so if the Red Sox win, Clemens' career is over. So Clemens is literally PUTTING HIS CAREER ON THE LINE against the Sox.
-
The worst part about this is that, in a roundabout way, it'll cause me to miss the Yankees/Red Sox game. Damn 4pm start. If the Yankees and Marlins both win, its the worst day ever.
-
Ok, I HAVE A LIST OF THESE PLAYERS. Look on the second page of the pinned thread, and there's a list of every player selected, sorted by team.

The key to evaluating young pitching talent is to look at the K and BB rates. 142 Ks in 160 IP is a very good sign.

Montreal drew more fans than the NY Mets as recently as the mid 90s. The franchise disintegrated the moment Jeff Loria bought the team. Loria failed to negotiage simple television coverage, and interest in the team plummeted. As soon as he saw his opening, he bolted. Had the Expos had a competent owner, they've could've gotten a tv contract and maintained a fan base. And even in the abysmal position they're in, they still did better than the $100 million Mets this year.

The worst was when 10-10-220 pitched the Doug Flutie foundation, promising that a portion of the proceeds would go to help mentally challenged children. According to the small print, the donation was .4% of the rate, up to $100,000. So basically, they spent more money advertising this "charity" cause then they actually donated to the charity!
