  1. Much of a Selig hater that I am, I can't see giving him blame for the steroid scandal. Steroids have popped up in every corner of world sports. MLB, NFL, NBA, boxing, professional wrestling, the Olympics, the Tour de France. How should the commissioner of one sport put a hedge on that? Selig might have covered it up, but he couldn't have stopped it.

  2. I don't see a problem with efforts to prevent player injuries in the NFL (and I wish MLB did something about home plate collisions, but I'm usually alone on that). Toning down celebrations though is really unnecessary. You scored points. Celebrate. It's a football field, not a church.

  3. Cowboy Numbers, why do you like Duke?

Memphis is trying to make it interesting, but they can't seem to get a complete defensive stop. It's a semi-defensive clampdown, but Mizzou is getting too many free throws.

Al, please don't jinx it. I give them tons of credit for not laying down and dying. We just have to keep driving to the basket, and make it fast. No threes unless Sallie has it and is open.

I'm just commenting that it's competitive, no longer a blowout.

Cowboy Numbers has an hour to draft his explanation!

The hell? We don't ban or suspend posters for not explaining sports allegiances.

    Biz Mackey, Catcher

Nearly a 30 year career in the Negro Leagues with a lifetime average of .335

Roy Campanella said he was the best catcher he's ever seen.

Great pick. Mackey was also a capable enough player to move around the diamond. He was the shortstop for Hilldale's 1924 championship club.

  5. And yet I can't get tickets to Opening Day at a reasonable price 'cause they went on sale via lottery. Jerks.

For the Mets or another team? The Phillies do the same thing, which is an annoyance but inevitable in a 47000 seat stadium. They actually do the same for Red Sox and Yankee series.

  6. Was Hercules supposed to be the Hercules, or just a strong man with a nickname? I thought it was the latter, but there are some promos where he talks about Mount Olympus and such, it's quite bizarre.

I'd guess the latter. When he debuted, Fred Blassie went on and on about how he discovered a latin superstar.

    Billy Hamilton

He'll play center and bat leadoff. Hit for .344 career and got on at a .455 clip. 912 career steals. 2,000 hits, 1,000 runs. And according to baseball reference, he was never caught stealing! 912 for 912!

You know that's because they didn't keep caught stealing numbers then, right?

Updated the front page. Have I missed anyone's picks?

  8. Ok, here's why I'm optimistic on the Cubs.

    1. They have the division's best pitching staff, and would even if Rich Harden missed the entire season. The Cardinals are restocking, the Brewers lost Sheets and Sabathia. The Astros are paper thin. Who is going to beat these guys?

    2. Giovany Soto is legitimate. Having a catcher who can slug .500 is a huge advantage.

    3. This is a team that is solid up and down, rather than relying on one or two big stars. If Bradley gets hurt for a couple weeks, it will not kill the team.

    4. Really, that 2005 club had Neifi Perez playing 154 games at shortstop. They were going to contend?
