Vern Gagne is a smelly liar JMA was a dumb prick for starting this crap up again

Got a ticket on the morning of the Leicester game because Southampton sent 500 back (bit pathetic for 1st match of the season). Dream start but the usual inability to play well with a lead did us in, we didn't hold on to the ball at all in the second half and we badly need to learn the art of possession football as we brought the pressure back on ourselves, we really missed Ferdinand when he had to go off as well as Deane was crap playing the same role. Throat still feels bad from all the shouting and screaming at the match and the banter with the muppets in the away end. Roll on Chelsea!

Bands like Mr T Experience, The Queers, Avail and Screeching Weasal never really grew past having a loyal but modest following on Lookout Records despite having good tunes and personality. Screaming Trees were a good band that never broke huge in the Grunge era and singer Mark Lanegan's solo albums deserve a wider audience for the quality of his voice & his songs. The Boo Radleys were often stupidly dismissed as a one hit wonder for the 'Wake Up Boo' single when they were one of the better guitar pop groups of the 90's, marrying 60's pop with the influence of later shoegazer/noise sound and producing a couple of really great albums. With the likes of Weezer (I like them) breaking big it was a shame a band like The Fastbacks never found similar success. Consistantly good songs and great harmonies. The Posies are another case for undervalued pop-rock but at least Frosting On The Beater was acknowledged as a good album by some. Throwing Muses were one of the key late 80's/early 90's American indie bands but never get the same acclaim as other acts from that era who get namechecked constantly. From recent years The Heavy Blinkers, Noahjohn and The Kingsbury Manx deserve a higher profile.

I didn't expect anything else from Mr Gagne, he's proven countless times he's an ignorant twat.

Subliminal Animal - Gimmick Poster or Troll?

Did One Bad Apple post under the name Ghast as well? -
Manfred Mann had loads of big hits in the British charts at least with 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' (I thought this was a really well known song), 'Pretty Flamingo' and 'Mighty Quinn' all being number 1 hits. They had a total of 10 other top 10 hits in the UK top 40 in the 60's.

'No Control' would be my favorite Bad Religion album with 'Suffer' a close second, I still haven't got round to hearing 'Process Of Belief' yet.

In YOUR reality or that of a thousand and one 'individual' rock critic drones maybe but obviously not in that persons opinion. I'd rather this thread feature the diverse range of stuff its so far thrown up than be reduced to one of those identikit style 100 greatest albums' of all time' things where I have to read why 'Pet Sounds', 'Blonde On Blonde' and 'What's Going On' are so great for the 1000th time. Go and make your own lists with WrestlingDeacon or something if you find other people's tastes so inferior or at least stop whining about it like a liitle bitch.

Never heard that one before! There are annoying Radiohead fans who consider them martyers of the modern world but then there's equally annoying Radiohead haters like your good self armed with the same three arguments as to why they suck = (I don't like the kind of people who like them etc). Dedicated fans of a particular band are always going to proclaim them musical gods or whatever but if we take into account critical standing as a more appropriate measurement of determining an 'overrated' band we might actually get some interesting opinions and arguments going. Post-OK Computer Radiohead doesn't interest me but their earlier period of that album and The Bends (when they weren't afraid to write a song with a good tune) was superb IMO so no overrated vote from me. Come to think of it this a really silly topic although if a 'favourite TSM artists' version popped up i'd vote for Elvis Costello in a second. Never liked his facial hair you see.

In the US, the movie is known as "Victory" and you can note that it also stars Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine. And how can you not note that it's directed by John Huston. It's a pretty good movie and I like it. It has a lot in common with The Longest Yard in the staging and how playing scenes are shot. You also have that "inmates vs. the guards" type storyline going on. If you like Victory, I highly recommend that you check out The Longest Yard. I don't really think of it as a John Huston film as much as the film where Pele, Michael Caine and Sly Stallone thrash the Nazi's as football. I like the comparison you made between between 'Escape' and 'The Longest Yard', both have really long and dramatic matches played out and engage your emotions in similar ways.

Dear Johnson, that post seemed a touch familiar. Ok, you made an incredibly dumb and completely groundless accusation and told me to fuck off for good measure so I slapped your wrists for being so silly. I don't think tone of my response was innapropriate in the slightest considering how hostile, immature and plain dumb your original post was and you deserve another slap for being such a hypocritical prat in your second post but I guess i'm too late as you've already claimed victory in this one. You're welcome to the 'glory', i'll concede before my remaining brain cells melt. Twat.

I really don't care for the list either, but that's no reason to bash America. If you have that big a problem with this country then maybe you should get the fuck off of an American message board. You're not too bright are you? That line was purely in jest my brainless friend (check the exclamation point you thick cunt!!!). I would be offended by your accusation but after re-reading my post I think most sane people will come to the obvious conclusion that you are one ignorantly thick little shit. I don't know if you really are as dim as you appear or whether you're just trying to start crap for the sake of it but either add something worthwhile to a thread for once in your life or shut the fuck up. Carry on everyone, nothing to see here.

Although you make an argument that 'Hoop Dreams' isn't essentially a film about Basketball (i.e i'ts just the backdrop to a wider social issues/commentary) maybe its ahead of Slap Shot because its just a more engaging, emotional and important film. Your assessment of the two films status is curious to say the least. Hoop Dreams is widely considered more of a 'classic' (rather more as flawed but fascinating in truth) than 'Slap Shot' could ever hope to be, 'minor cult film' would be a more appropriate and truthful title for it.

WHERE THE FUCK IS 'ESCAPE TO VICTORY'? Stupid American list! That film is the classic 'boys own' sports film in cinema history, 'The Great Escape' made into a football flick for the ages (the proper game which is actually played with your feet). The moment when Pele busts the Nazi's net with an overhead kick and when Officer Max Von Sydow leads the applause to acknowledge the skill and bravery of the Allied team is a perfect symbol of the 'beautiful game' itself. Kes could have been included as well just for the classic football scene in PE class with Brian Glover cheating like a bastard. Pure GOLD. Fuck that stupid list

What's Primus good for unless you like masturbating over bass solos?

EDIT: 'Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer and 'Man Bites Dog' Yeah, there's one particular scene in each of those films that I found very hard to watch when I saw them. Neither scene is problematic from a moral standpoint IMO because you could argue strongly that their purpose is to cleverly turn the whole voyerism (sp?) issue back in the audience's faces to some extent, especially in the connected scene in 'Henry' where he and Otis are together. The Austrian films 'Benny's Video' and 'Funny Games' (Michael Haneke) explore that theme most directly and uncomfortably. Not sure of the scariest but Fulci's 'The New York Ripper' is the most offensively misogynistic horror/slasher film i've ever seen and most memorable ending would go to 'Don't Look Now'. Its maybe more a thriller/mystery than a horror but the original European version of 'The Vanishing' an unnerving film as is 'Eraserhead' which some French writer/director once brilliantly described as 'the closest thing to a nightmare i've ever seen on screen' (or words to that effect). Great description of a film that makes zero sense and manages to be depressing, horrifying and confusing all at once.

'Kelly Watch The Stars' by Air has a really neat atmospheric feel to it while being really catchy. Its a cliche in all discussion of the band but a lot of Calexico songs really do have a classic spaghetti western sound that just sounds great, songs like 'the Ballad Of Cable Hogue' just sound a bit different. 'Grumpus' by Lambchop, I love the way the strings sound together with the vocals in a widescreen but low key kind of way. Stuff like 'Bulletproof' and 'Congregation' by The Afghan Whigs are effortlessly cool sounding, funky and rocks at the same time. Good shout for Monster Magnet earlier BTW, everything off 'Spine Of God' is great sounding in a fuzzed up, drugged up, heavy, funny and catchy all at once way.

Friday is ok, its got its moments but overall its forgettable enough. Thanks for correcting me, Get Carter is a great film with a great soundtrack too.

That happens to the best of us, AoO. Oh, I don't regret it or anything, but it's probably the meanest thing I've ever done to someone that I'm comfortable mentioning. If it was an unprovoked assault you could at least feel guilty and ashamed about it. What kind of morally reprehensible heathen are you for goodness sake?
-
Get Carter IS a great film, a proper classic no less. It's the equal of any crime film of its era (I know when The Godfather was made!) and Caine is brilliant in it, totally nailing his character in a way only Bob Hoskins matched in 'The Long Good Friday' (another interesting film) as far as British crime cinema goes. The depiction of time and place and the whole atmosphere & execution of the film make it a key film in its genre

no. Why not? There are plenty of bands out there with a great collection of songs, but which are scattered throughout dozens of shitty albums. Exactly. There are definately some bands whose Best Of/Greatest Hits represents the sole purchase worth getting with no remotely essential songs they ever recorded missing. Simple. Document is the most overrated REM album by a distance IMO even though its generally regarded as one of their best critically. On the other hand Out Of Time is kind of the complete opposite for me.

MASH - Maybe its my years as some people might put it but for me it seems a tedious and almost smug film in thrall to how radical it thinks it is. For a film lauded for being sophisticated in its humor and politics there's a lot of toothless satire & camp pratfalling going on in an almost 'Carry On' style. IF...... - Another 'radical' film that hasn't aged too well, very heavy handed and obvious when it could have been more subtlely effective and the presumably french new wave influenced sequences come over a bit ham fisted. Any Woody Allen film. For every exact same character with a different name, for the whole 4 facial expressions, Jewish 'humor', the recycled jokes, the pretty 17 year olds, the kooky divorcees etc, etc, etc. Just to check, 'Dead Alive' is the American title for Peter Jackson's 'Brain Dead' right?
