  1. Posted thread on Shoryuken.com T8: The Canadian Fighting Game Championships - The New Age DATE: Friday July 13th - Sunday July 15th LOCATION: York Cove York University 4700 Keele Street, Toronto, Ontario M3J 1P3 The Canadian Fighting Game Championships are going through a change of format this year as the tournament moves to a console environment. Local players will note that York Cove is actually an arcade and therein lies the beauty of this event. All side and main event games will be played on console while existing Japanese Vs Cabinets will be used for casual play. Furthermore, the Cove is equipped with pool tables, fooz ball tables, and 25 Personal Computers if you're not in the mood for video games. The Cove also sports a Bubble Tea Shop in house along with a snack bar if Bubble Tea isn't to your liking. Cove is maintained within York University. As such, players will not longer have to venture far to get any assortment of food. York University has an assortment of restaurants of the multicultural variety. It also sports more familiar restaurants including: Popeye's Chicken Wendy's Subway KFC/Taco Bell As you can see, this is a vast change from ORBIT Entertainment in year's past where variety outside of East Asian cuisine was limited without a long walk or driving a few minutes. We hope that the players will enjoy York Cove as the new home of the Canadian Championships for the forseeable future. CHECK OUT SYSTEM A system will be put in place between T8 Staff and the players to register equipment that is on loan (TV's, consoles, sticks) to ensure that theft (as sad as it is to see) is not a factor. We strongly encourage players to keep an eye on their equipment but I'm sure we can all agree that tracking equipment in and out of the venue is best for all parties. SITE FEE There is a $10 one time fee for every player to cover the cost of renting what is usually a public venue for the weekend. Considering cost of venue and expected turnout, I already know that the party renting the venue (me) is taking a loss on this event. I do this for the good of the Canadian communty and the SF scene as a whole so please come out and support your scene (and save my wallet from horrible rape). GAME ROSTER The Canadian Championships is sporting it's largest roster to date with 12 games total. Also, if players feel that a game should be entered as a side tournament AND it can meet the 16 player requirement that all Side Tournaments face, they are welcome to bring it to T Tourney staff and we will add it to the roster. Please note, that unless the directors can attest to the game having the necessary turnout on SRK, or on the day of the tournament, new submissions will not be permitted. Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

AP confirms he strangled Nancy and smothered Daniel. I can't believe I'm this disgusted with a man I've respected for so many years.

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

Because a psychotic break doesn't really apply in a case like this. He was on the road already and gearing up for a PPV where he'd be leading the ECW brand. He'd have to pre-meditate something like this to know that he was going to skip the show(s), go back home, kill the wife and then kill the son the next day.

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

I shouldn't have brought that up. There are a lot of posts stating that he messaged wrestlers during the PPV saying he was home watching the show with his son. That's not established fact though. My bad...

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

There are a lot of things that don't click with a pre-meditated murder/suicide. The biggest being the following: - Who goes out of their way to leave the house show circuit to kill his family? I could understand if Benoit was home for a day or two and thus had the time and assuming he had a psychotic break, the motive to kill his family. Meltzer had already reported that Benoit was called back to Atlanta for a family emergency. It doesn't click that the guy would apparently snap while on the road and of all things go back home to kill his family. If he snapped and killed himself in his hotel that'd at least make more sense. - Also, if you run with the idea that this was pre-meditated, who kills 3/4 of the family? Wouldn't he wait for his older son to be home (the kid was in Edmonton IIRC)? - If he killed the wife on Saturday and watched the PPV with the son on Sunday, isn't the kid going to notice that his mom isn't around all day? Was the office door locked? The kid is going to wonder where his mom is all day and all night (her car is going to be in the driveway obviously). The likelihood of Benoit killing the son that late the day after is slim to none. This conference is going to be really interesting. If the guy killed his family, a true hero of mine is basically scum. I truly hope there was an X-Factor involved in all this.

Mr. McMahon "dead" - Now for the "whodunit" angle.

I like Eric Bischoff or Chris Jericho for no money. Who likes it?

    If you owned an arcade...

That my friend is a RIDICULOUS statement. There are MASSIVE engine variations between the SF2 series and anything that came after it. In fact there are big differences between the Hyper Fighting (generally the game played at the peak of the early 90's boom) and the Super Turbo engine. The Alpha games play NOTHING like SF2 and then after that the next closest iteration would be something like the Capcom vs SNK games and that's a huge stretch.

    If you owned an arcade...

Time Crisis 4 House Of The Dead 4 Initial D v4 Mark Kart Arcade GP Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Marvel vs Capcom 2 Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Into The Groove 2 Dance Dance Revolution Super Nova Drum Mania (I can't recall the latest version, it's in my local arcade) Anya; our picks are very much alike. I was surprised that you didn't have Initial D as it's easily the most played racing game on the planet by a mile.

    Are arcades dead to you?

The arcade scene has taken major hits due to console conversions being as good or better (extra options, characters) than their arcade ports. The advent of smooth online play has killed the community aspect that arcades used to uniquely represent as well. That being said, there are still major arcade scenes throughout North America. I'm a competitive Street Fighter player and have more than enough competition around the Greater Toronto Area because the player sought each other out (thus the banner in my sig) and organized themselves. We stay in constant contact with ownership of the major arcades in the area so we get proper maintenance of equipment. Monthly tournaments keep everyone's competitive spirits up. If you live in the Greater Toronto Area I suggest: - ORBIT Entertainment in Pacific Mall at the corner of Steeles Avenue & Kennedy Road East - Downtown Funland at the corner of Yonge Street & Bloor Street - York Cove in York Lanes within York University at Steeles Avenue & Keele - Fun Game in Shoppers World at the corner of Steeles Avenue & Hurontario Road If anyone has an interest in fighting games, I suggest making an account at Shoryuken.com's forums. It has the best strategies for fighting games related to Street Fighter anywhere in the world and is partnered with Tekken Zaibatsu (for Tekken & Soul Calibur) along with Dustloop (for Guilt Gear players). It also has the best general discussion forum anywhere on the Internet IMHO.

    Box Office Report...

I couldn't have said it any better. There isn't a person I know that had a bad thing to say about this movie. There's either the people that saw it and loved it or the people who haven't seen it, heard it was awesome and will see it soon. I'm surprised that a movie pulling in 29M wasn't enough for top spot, especially considering Pirates hasn't had the best of reviews (professional or otherwise).

    Hey BITCH

Damian resurrected his own dead thread? That's... different. Come to Toronto and yell at Bob Barron while I tape it.

    So Leena's banned.... again

Why do you guys keep feeding her ego with threads based around her banning?

    The Canadian Fighting Game Championships

Yeah we don't usually get too many folks coming all the way up from Maryland. Maryland and Virginia have a fantastic fighting game scene though with some of the top players in the entire continent. I was just at the East Coast Championships this past weekend and got to meet many players and hang with some old faces. Great times...

    Smallville Season 6 thread

It's all about JLU w/Martian Manhunter vs Bizarro Superman in the premiere of Season 7. Smallville writers make me sick. Ever since season 2 they've had the same problem. They write a sick premiere, writing one really good ep (during February Sweeps) and write a beast finale. Everything else is just garbage filler. I hate myself for watching this show week in and week out hoping for something different and despite being disappointed watching anyway.

Comments that don't warrant a thread

Akuma isn't that much older than Ryu. His main tie to Ryu/Ken is through his brother who trained them (Gouken, names Sheng Long at first). Akuma killed Gouken and later tried to bring out the evil side of Ryu (the big arc of Alpha 3). In essence he was a mentor to Ryu on the evil side but it never panned out. AFAIK there is no true mention of Akuma being Ryu's father.

    The Canadian Fighting Game Championships

I couldn't figure out where this "banned" idea came from until I went back through the thread. The banned list is for the Marvel vs Capcom 2 low tier tournament. The banned characters are considered the best in the game and have a distinct advantage over the rest of the roster. We thought it'd be fun as an attraction match (note the banned list is only for the low tier event, not the team tournament or singles tournament) to only have low tier characters in there for a big change of pace and to let players showcase talents they don't typically get to show in regular tournaments. Concerning games not on the list, we have a thread specifically for games nominated by the players. For instance if World's Worst Fan wanted VF4 on the game list, he can nominate it. If he gets 16 players (himself included) to join, we would be more than happy to add the game into the schedule because the players want it and we want as diverse a line up as possible. On a related note; we wanted to work with the local Smash community adding either Melee or Brawl (if it was available) to the list and they turned down working with us.

    The Canadian Fighting Game Championships

I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean. The very best players from all over Canada and some from the United States come up for this annual tournament, showcasing great talent but it's hardly an elitist tournament. We encourage all players with all skill levels to participate. For many it proves a great learning experience as they get to see the best a game engine has to offer in a competitive environment. There's nothing elitist nor would be ever exclude any players from this event.

    The Canadian Fighting Game Championships

It depends on the game being played. A game like 3rd Strike is very popular in Toronto and draws around 70 - 80 people each year. We usually have a couple hundred unique players for this event spanning across many games. There's a very talented pool of Virtua Fighter players in Toronto, you should join up and put your skills to the test.

    Weekend Box Office

Sony has to be thrilled with Spiderman's drop off. Another week and the film will have been paid for in domestic gross alone. They're basically in gravy from this point forward and they haven't even touched the DVD market yet. What a cash cow this thing is going to be when it's all said and done.

    Box Office Report...

The Grindhouse numbers have to be considered a disappointment. It was basically universally praised by critics, had the Tarantino name behind it and a cool idea working in it's favour and it was still stomped. It cost $55 million to make and I can't see them recovering that in domestic ticket sales. Looks like DVD will have to save this movie.
