thats dumb. Ultimate X and Six Sides Of Steel matches could be really special if they're done only rarely, and when it fits the storyline, 2 six sides of steel on one show is nuts. that'd be like the WWE putting two TLC matches on one show, or 2 hell in a cells.

Honestly, the Long character while fun and one of the more entertaining GMs, has been one of the "worst" in storyline standpoint. He has clear biases and doesn't even try to hide them. You could tell they were setting up an out on Long as GM from the very beginning. every GM has had clear biases that they've not even tried to hide. Steph gave Undertaker PPV title shots when he'd done nothing to earn them, Heyman screwed with Benoit, making him #1 in the Rumble just because he hated him, Angle stripped Cena of the US title for no reason, screwed around with Eddie, and gave JBL a PPV title shot because he stopped some Mexicans crossing the border, Bischoff had his nose up Evolution's ass for a year straight, and Austin screwed with Jericho on multiple ocassions. SummerSlam 96, match ended by Bearer deliberately hitting Taker with the urn and turning heel. that's not clean either. when else did Mankind beat Taker, besides house shows? didn't they have a buried alive match? how did that end?

how does that work then? surely RAW and SD wrestlers work the same number of house shows in a week, and one day for TV tapings? why would one brand allow him more time at home than the other?

yeah agreed on Bulldog, i didn't really think of the British guys (Daddy,Haystacks, McManus). but the average non-wrestling fan will not know who Dynamite, Bret or Savage are. and with Taker, if you asked them 'who is The Undertaker' they would say 'he's a wrestler' but if you showed them a picture of him and said 'who is this?' the regular person on the street would not have a clue.

You kinda contradicted yourself because you said the Garvin run did no damage, yet you say Flair had to build it up afterwards. That’s precisely my point. Flair hurt the company for his benefit so he could swoop in and save the day. Maybe saying irreparable damage was a tad too strong. McMahon certainly lent a hand in making Starrcade 87 a commercial failure, but he had nothing to do with it being a CRITICAL flop. That falls entirely on the NWA. Cant blame everything on Vince. The momentum they could have received if Starrcade 87 had been a strong show that outperformed SS 87 resulting in a fresh face established at the top after years of Flair domination, might have gone a long way as far as house show revenue and interest in the product. Considering the show they put on, they might as well not even shown up. Its comparable to WCW vs WWF in 1996. WCW was putting a lot of fianacial pressure on Vince, but Vince’s own product and decision making was just as strong of a determining factor in the war. It was probably for the best that few people were exposed to that abomination of a main event at Starrcade 87. What I meant was, even if he had done damage, it was built back up anyway. Ronnie Garvin winning the title was an obvious play for buyrates. Crockett wanted people to buy the PPV to see Ric Flair regain the championship. Vince McMahon making cable companies choose was a big part of Starrcade's failure. You're also showing that you have no idea on Jim Crockett Promotions/Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling history. Garvin was never a lower card guy. He hovered around the uppercard. He was US Tag Team Champions with Barry Windham, the last Mid-Atlantic Champion (before the title was dropped in 86) and he had generally hung around the upper midcard. The most accurate comparison to Garvin, card position wise would be Christian. and if Christian won the World Title right now in a lame duck reign just to drop it back to HHH at WrestleMania that would damadge the company.

in the UK the truth is that your average non-wrestling fan (i.e. somebody who has never watched it ever) would still know Hogan and possibly Rock. and in America i'd guess they'd know Ventura since he's a politician? but no more than that.

i've read that's what they wanted for WrestleMania VIII but when Hogan announced his leaving after that PPV it changed the plans because: a) Flair was the champ b) Hogan didn't want to lose his retirement match c) Vince didn't want Hogan to retire as WWF Champion (understandable, this was before the monthly PPV era, and unless they did it on house shows or regular TV tapings it wouldve left the WWF without a champion until SummerSlam in August)

going along that score, gotta mention Steve Austin's US Title reign. Fall Brawl 94 - wins it from Ricky Steamboat who vacates the title due to career-ending injury. steals the show during that retirement speech with his fake tears and mocking, a brilliant segment. until - Commissioner Whoever-it-was comes out and forces him to defend the title against Hacksaw Jim Duggan, who beats him in 27 seconds.
