    WrestleMania XXIII Main Event (RAW)

Can't believe I'm about to say this, but you hit the nail right on the head.

Now is a great time to get WWE 24/7. They're up to showing Raws from September 96. If you remember, this is month that Russo started writing the shows and the product became good. Pretty much the beginning of the attitude era. Russo didn't become head writer until the spring of 1997. He was only contributing ideas in late 96.

Jeter is a very good player and he's having an excellent season. But really, the Yankees would hardly suffer if they lost him for the year. Just look at how they did with Sheffield and Matsui gone this year, and your eyes should tell you how insignificant one player can be to a machine like the Yankees. Let's look at a theoretical situation where Jeter is out. They already have a better SS on their team. If Jeter was out, they'd slide A-Rod over, acquire a 3B (like Shea Hillenbrand or comparable player) and lose a game or two in the standings. It wouldn't exactly bury the team.

I didn't wish injury on the guy, but I do think that it would be interesting to see a scenario where the Yankees were as successful playing without Jeter. And what the hell does any of that have to do with Biggio or Bagwell? You are the most non-sensical poster on this board. EDIT: As the max correctly pointed out, I am a Sox fan

Good point. Jeter's bulletproof anyways, so even if they rolled to a title without him, the media would proclaim that they did it for Jeter, or he inspired them from the sidelines.

    The Old School questions thread

All I can remeber is that Stone Cold was supposed to turn heel on the Rock and cost him the match. I don't know if HHH would retain under that scenario, but that seems the most likely outcome. Remember though that they knew for a couple weeks that Stone Cold wasn't going to work the match. It's plausible that they hadn't even worked out the finish by that point.

The Rock is no longer a wrestler who does movies. He is an actor that used to wrestle. That's an important difference. He has always handled himself as a class act. He has come back multiple times to put over young talent, and he always has nice words about his previous career. He's moved on to bigger and better things, and he's done it quietly and respectfully. He hasn't demanded a huge retirement celebration, or come back just to plug his films, or asked for big money to do dream matches once a year. Wrestling fans should be grateful for all that he offered when he was around, and how much he did for the respectability and acceptance of the sport in the mainstream.

Seemingly it's either that or clubbing Jeter in the leg, since the Yankees will cease to exist if he can't play. Even though I don't have anything against him personally, tt would be nice if Jeter missed a year so that the Yankees fans could realize how little he means to the team's overall success.

You're exactly right. It's an excellent run because it's almost completely improbable that a team with a moderate payroll could assemble a team that could win a division 14 straight times. Whether it be a bad free agent signing, injuries, depleted farm system, bad luck or whatever, no team should be able to continue that sort of winning tradition without one misstep. It would have been nice had they won a few more World Series titles during the run, but they really only had a 1 in 8 chance eacy year they made it. Winning 1 or 2 titles is all that would be expected just for simple probability's sake. To me, it is a far greater accomplishment to prove your ability over 162 games than winning a best of 5 or best of 7 series.

Vader's jump from WCW to the WWF

He got into a backstage fight with Paul Orndorff, where he not only got his ass handed to him, but lost his job as well. He took the next few months off, worked Japan a little and then signed with the WWF.

That's really unfortunate for Liriano. Not only will that likely cost him the Rookie of the Year, I'm fearful that his career will ever get back on track. He's at a bad age to be having these sorts of arm problems. I don't usually listen to Mike and Mike, and I'm really glad that I don't. What a stupid, stupid thing to say. The Braves had one of the most dominant runs ever and unfortunately people want to discount it because they didn't win more championships. What a joke.

    The Office, Season Two

So what's the deal with the $18 Circuit City thing? Their ad says $29.99. Did they lower the price? Is it some sort of mistake? If it's for real I will swing over and get it this morning.

WWE News and Notes - 9/11

God damn it. Yeah, I could have used some spoiler tags on this one. I kinda got the sense that Cena was winning, but there was enough doubt that I probably would have gone to the sports bar and watched Unforgiven if I hadn't seen this. Now, it probably won't be worth it to me. Don't you realize that this is the WWE? Plans will probably change a dozen times before the event actually happens. It also seems that more often than not the WWE talks themselves out of their own long-term plans. I'd say it's even money that Edge retains.

Just to sort of put a bookend on the MVP discussion, here's a list of the top candidates based on WARP1. I was a bit surprised to see Johan so far out in front. Really seems like it's his award to lose at this point. Player WARP1 Santana 10.4 Jeter 8.5 Mauer 7.8 Hafner 7.7 Dye 7.5 Rivera 7.4 Liriano 7.2 Morneau 7.0 Verlander 6.8 Ortiz 6.5 Konerko 6.4 Thome 6.0 Ramirez 5.7

His VORP is only 42.9 and his WARP1 is 4.6, which I don't think would even put him in the top 20. He's fifth among DH's in Equivalent Average. If you look at his more traditional stats, he will barely crack 100 RBI's, won't score 100 runs, won't bat .300 and doesn't play the field. He should get very little consideration. Good story? Yes. Comeback Player of the Year? Absolutely. MVP candidate? Not really.

Ortiz just slipped down a Mountain with his stupid quotes from yesterday. The guy clearly has become me first and team second kind of player. It's a joke that he is ONLY concerned about an MVP award on 9/11 when his team fell right out of the playoff hunt over the past month and a half. Did you even read the article?

So is Travis Hafner supposed to stand in the bullpen and use voodoo magic to make the relief pitchers not suck? So the Indians had a bad year. It would have been much, much worse if they didn't have the best hitter in the game on their team. You're acting like Derek Jeter willed his team to the playoffs on the strength of his awesome year. Please. The Yankees still would have made the playoffs without him. By your logic, how valuable can a player be when the team could still win a pennant without you?

    NFL - Week One.

The Seahwawks were 13-3 last year. Not only was that the best regular season record in the NFC, they cemented that standing by steamrolling through the playoffs despite everyone picking against them every week. Even though they stunk it up in the Superbowl, they were a few bad calls away from winning the whole thing. They have a high-powered offense and an above average defense. The only flukey year they've had recently was 2004 when they lost a bunch of close games and choked away a few others. I fully expect them to be a title contender this year. And we don't all wear flannels and listen to grunge music in the northwest.

That is so asinine. I feel like I'm arguing with a brick wall. Travis Hafner and Derek Jeter have both been worth about 8 wins above a replacement player. Take Jeter off the Yankees and they probably still make the playoffs. Take Hafner off the Indians and they are in Royals territory. Why is Jeter more valuable? The goal is to create runs for your team, and Hafner has done that just as well, if not better than Jeter (even when accounting for defense). Why not just call it the Most Valuable Team award if you are giving it the best player on the best team?

    NFL - Week One.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Is there any reason to believe that this team won't be in the mix again this year?

Why is it Ortiz's fault that the rest of the team hasn't played up to expectations? You are penalizing Ortiz for the subpar play of his teammates. How is that fair? What really doesn't make any sense is that people are using team performance to decide an individual award. So if Derek Jeter had the exact same year, but did it with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays instead of the Yankees, it's not quite as good? Why can players only be valuable if they are on playoff teams?
