Titles or Talent: What's More Important?

Here is some of the discussion that took place in the other thread: I'd much rather root for an organization that put a winning team on the field every year than one that wins a title and then holes up for the next decade. I understand the expression "flags fly forever" but I don't see how my enjoyment is improved today by knowing that my team won a title five or ten years ago. Jumping across sports here, but I'd be happy with the Red Sox throwing out a 90-95 win team each year even if they didn't have the two titles this decade. I like rooting for the chance that the team can break through. Also I don't get how you can evaluate "players" in terms of championships. Last time I checked, football, baseball and basketball were "team" sports. Eli didn't win a title because he has some innate ability to win big games. He won because his defense shredded everyone. He won because he has a phenomenal running game. He won because of a tremendous receiving corps anchored by one the game's best wideouts. He dis his part, but I don't know how that ring on his finger makes him any better as a QB than McNabb when their respective circumstances weren't the same. Yes, it does. Relying on blind luck is not a good business model. That's why teams spend millions upon millions in free agency and getting ready for the draft. I'm not saying I agree with it but let's face it, it has now become the measuring stick for all quarterbacks. It's the strike they were trying to place on Dan Marino. No one pays attention to the talent, hell no one pays much attention to the GAME when it is over. All they seem to care about is which quarterback left with the ring. I'd STILL take Donovan over Eli even without the ring. Cause that receiving corps in NY that game saved Eli's ass about a dozen times and that was a true statement for a long time. He is improving more and more everyday though so it's not even a strike against Eli.

    Barack Obama Circle Jerk?

Fair enough, but I don't care that it was my topic that was closed. It's just that there was obviously a need for one and the fact that it was overlooked bothered me a bit. I've said it before, I like the mods a lot, but the fact we can't get one of the 14 to be somewhat proactive about this sort of thing irks me. So 909 explained what happened, but I still think he could have siphoned off the few posts that were going in the Circle Jerk thread and put them in their own topic, be it mine or someone else's.

    Barack Obama Circle Jerk?

I'm not going to go off on another mega-thread tangent, but I did find the act of closing a thread-worthy topic to be somewhat suspicious. This whole area of the board is supposedly for feedback to the mods (since the Ombudsman thing is a joke), so I requested feedback. Maybe I just have my panties in a bunch this morning, but I find the Barack thread unnecessary and the name ridiculous.

Probably deserves its own thread guys. I'm not going to be able to watch due to work commitments. Hopefully someone can provide some running updates.

[Rolling Stone]But Aretha Franklin is the greatest rock singer of all time![/Rolling Stone] I really hope Obama knocks one out of the park today. This whole event has received a disgusting amount of coverage. He needs something memorable to avoid a backlash for the ardent support he's been getting.

KKC likes to board hard at a .08 BAC; KOAB doesn't even turn on his computer unless he's hit .15.

    The 2009 NFL Offseason

But naiwf, your entire premise presupposes that the team is not winning titles solely because of McNabb. Couldn't we just as easily say he's doing what he can but the organization needs to put better talent around him? I just don't agree with this notion that the team is pushing 8-12 wins each year but McNabb is failing them in the end. Replacing McNabb just seems misguided as there seems to be very little concrete evidence that he is the cause of this team coming up short. Give him a better supporting cast and see what happens. It seems like it would be a lot easier to take a team that lost a conference title game and find a few pieces to get them over the top than to tear the whole thing down and start over.

    The 2009 NFL Offseason

McNabb may be 1/5 in NFC Championship games, but at least he's been there five times. Tom Brady is the only other current QB who can say that. Why would you blow up a team that is in the prime position to compete year after year on the small chance that you find something better? McNabb is a top five QB in this league - what is the likelihood that you can even find someone better in the next five years? Think about how many teams around the league struggle for years to find some consistency behind center and you would advocate the Eagles dumping one of the few sure things in the league because he's always been very good, but not quite great? It's been said before, but the Eagles need a go-to receiver and a bruising RB to take pressure off of Westbrook. I find it kind of preposterous that McNabb is being called a choker today when he threw for 375 yards and 3 TD. Shouldn't we be blaming Asante Samuel for failing to show up against Fitzgerald? How about the non-existent running game? Akers shitting the bed all day? Where's that backlash?

    The 2009 NFL Offseason

I will cry for many hours if he takes this deal. That was a really loose translation on YKRG's part of what was stated in the Baltimore Sun article. It states that unnamed "sources" think that Jones will go after Lewis if he makes it to free agency and that a reasonable offer could be three years with $25 million guaranteed. There was nothing even remotely indicating that an offer is on the table in any way, shape or form. Linky goodness

More Orioles stuff: Markakis signs $66 million extension MacPhail is really making all the right moves in Baltimore. It's a shame that they play in the AL East. I still have them finishing dead last in the division, but they could be competitive somewhere else.

    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

You know, I totally forgot that Adam Jones came up as a SS. He probably wasn't that good there, necessitating the move to the outfield, but that could be a good outside-the-box solution for the Orioles. Shift Jones to SS (where they need a long-term solution anyways) and then use Scott/Pie/Markakis as the outfield. Huff can DH and Millar could come back as the first baseman. All things considered, it might be the best use of their talent. Jones could probably hit well enough to cover his defensive deficiencies from the position change. It might even be a net positive by getting Huff off the field and Pie in his natural position. In other Orioles news, they acquired SP David Pauley from the Boston Red Sox for former Rule 5 pick Randor Bierd. Pauley's got a mediocre fastball, but enough control to probably eat up some innings at the back end of their rotation.

I've been trying to make sure I update this along the way. Check the first post of the thread and see if your name is on the list. If it's not and you want to be in, post your stats here or in a PM Let's shoot for Wednesday for our first round of updates. That'll be about one week from the time that most people joined.

    Overseas Folder

Well... It's no secret that the time has passed for Overseas and Indies to have their owner folder. There's just not enough activity left to support it. Should we merge it with TNA (although I guess TNA is a step above an indie), throw it to General, keep it or just jettison it altogether?

    Let's Talk About: Hair Metal

Often panned as a relic of the '80s and an example of the way excess and pomp can ruin good music, I still maintain that there is plenty of good stuff that came out this era. Yeah, maybe big hair and tight spandex invoke a snicker here and there, but like any genre you take the good with the bad. For my money, it's all about Motley Crue. Shout at the Devil and Dr. Feelgood are really solid albums. Surprisingly, I don't think they sound as dated as one might think. Discuss.

God that game hurt. My entire body was hurting for three days after that game. I damn near gave up baseball after that game. I walked around in a stupor for days. I can recall almost everything my about experience while watching that game, including where I was, what I was doing, who was with me and what happened afterwards. Every little detail is just ingrained in my head.
