Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful responses. This was really interesting. Gold stars all around for boarding hard.

Let's Talk About... The Apter Mags

As far as I know AWA had world title status all the way to the bitter end. I think Al is wrong about the status of WWF title. I don't have the magazines in front of me, but I am almost positive that the WWF lost world title status from the late 70s until Hogan's run.

    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

A few newsbits: -The Red Sox exercised their option on Tim Wakefield for next year. That $4 million perpetual option has to be the most team-friendly contract in sports. -Not surprisingly, Teixeira, Sheets and Manny all filed for free agency. There were 65 players in all who filed on first day. -Edgar Renteria and Ken Griffey had their options declined. Renteria might resign for a lower amount, but Griffey's looking for work.

    The TSM Hall of Fame

Half way through the voting period and Agent, Milky, Czech and Bob have a firm hold on four of the spots. Margins are close enough that those guys could end up being knocked out, though. There are about a half dozen others who are in contention. Keep those votes coming.

Two of the spots are basically locked up. There are several posters in the running for the final nominations. Remember, the nomination period ends on Monday.

Let's Talk About... The Apter Mags

I remember that. The WWF supposedly lost world title status because they were only holding cards in the northeast during the Backlund run (is this even true?). They also held out world title status from ECW until late 1999. Ironically, this was just months before the company ceased to exist.

    Fix Your Team...

Hate to break it to you VX, but just about every credible beat reporter says that the Rockies are going to trade Holliday, and probably Atkins, this offseason.

    This week in the NBA

Everyone seems to love Bynum, but shouldn't he do something before he earns that big contract extension. His resume consists of 1/4 of a good season so far. It's not like the team would ever be in danger of losing him anyways.

    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

Mike Jacobs had a line of .247/.299/.514 this year. The 32 HR are nice, but I would think that there are better options out there for 1B. The Royals already have Ryan Shealy on the roster, who could probably put up comparable numbers if given the job full time. Don't understand this trade from their perspective.

Let's Talk About... The Apter Mags

I always loved that. The US champ and IC champs were the no. 1 contenders no matter what. It always gave an extra bit of legitimacy to the belts regardless of what was happening on tv. The symmetry between seeing a guy get a push on tv and then seeing he was, say, the no. 3 contender, was always comforting. Along the right hand margin they had rankings for a bunch of indy promotions. I specifically remember that one company had a guy named T. Rantula who was champ for several years. I was always perplexed as to why he didn't end up in WWF or WCW if he dominated his company in such a way. He eventually showed up on WCW Nitro as a fat, out of shape enhancement talent. It wasn't until a little later on that I found out that T. Rantula ran his own two-bit vanity promotion with him as owner, booker and champ. PWI played it off as if it were some legitimate company. Ha. WWF had their own mag and thus didn't need Apter. PWI used to work very closely with JCP, and there was a lot of crossover promotion. Apter used to rig a lot of the big awards so that they ended up in the hands of guys that were getting a big push. As a reader, I just always assumed that both promotions had equal sized fanbases. Seems ridiculous now given the size of their crowds, but whatever, I was just a naive mark.

2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Well, temporarily ignoring the fact that the first couple of sentences are plagued by bad grammar and spelling, the anecdote itself makes little to no sense. You indicate that you ask your friend for the score, to which he replies that the game is over. This makes you angry. Why? Is it because the Phillies won? That you missed a close game? We've already established that you chose shitty horror movie night with Sara over the Series. What changed between that decision and the conclusion of the ballgame? Secondly, we must address this mysterious text message that ends up in Sara's hands. If you wanted to respond to your friend's text, why not hit reply? Who goes back into their phone book to compose a new message? That's drunk texting 101. Finally, the message that ended up in Sara's inbox. What was so embarrassing? It even sounds cute. You chose a night with her over a stupid ballgame. Chicks love that shit. It's not like you sent a message that said "I'm going to try and hump this slut."

2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays

I don't know what it is, but I just didn't get into this Series. Maybe I'm just a bad baseball fan that falls into the trap of wanting Boston/NY/Chicago/LA. Or maybe it's the fact that MLB has developed a playoff system that is completely anticlimactic after a great regular season. Oh well, congrats to the Phils and the Rays. Philadelphia had a fine squad this year and that city was about due for a title. The Rays have a tough division, but I have a sneaking suspicion they'll be back in the Series before too long.

    The TSM Hall of Fame

I didn't really post enough in the old days to have those guys register with me. I don't think anyone on my list is that new anyways. As for you picks... Anglesault sucked and he got banned. I think the banning was lifted recently, but no. I don't remember the other two. If you want to nominate them, go right ahead.

Ideally, this would only last two weeks. One for discussion and nominations and one for the actual voting. But, hey, if you're against it who am I to argue?

    This week in the NBA

It is just a foot sprain, but let's keep in mind that Oden has never been healthy. He had the wrist at Ohio State, the knee last year and the foot now. Too early to make any sort of statement regarding these issues, but he hasn't yet shown that he can stay healthy.

Let's Talk About...Diesel's WWF World title run

Not to turn this thread into fantasy booking, but what would you have done with the title back in 1995? Keep in mind that Bret hadn't exactly set the world on fire in 1994 and had mostly run through all the viable challengers. Where do you go? Do you build to a Diesel win at Rumble or Mania? Have Shawn take the title as a heel and spend the year defending against Diesel, Ramon, Taker and Bret? Put the belt on someone else entirely? I just don't know how many other options there were out there. The Diesel reign sort of sucked, but I doubt that we could have ended up with anything better.

    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

I've made a list of the ten biggest names who will likely change addresses this offseason (either through free agency or a trade). Anyone want to take guesses as to where these players end up, and what sort of package it takes to get them (either in terms of money or prospects)? CC Sabathia Mark Teixeira Matt Holliday Jake Peavy AJ Burnett Manny Ramirez Ben Sheets Francisco Rodriguez Pat Burrell Adam Dunn If there is anyone else you'd like to throw in, go for it. Plenty of other names out there (Lowe, Furcal, Cabrerea, Fuentes, Atkins, etc.).

The NBA will hold the 2010 All-Star game at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. The announcement will be made tonight at the Mavs season opener. It sounds like an interesting idea. Link

    Find Cheech a New Name!

I recently became aware that there is a professional wrestler on the indy scene using the name Cheech. Frankly, this unacceptable to me. I can't in good conscience post on a pseudo-wrestling board with a wrestler name. There's a symmetry there that I don't want to be a part of. Since, I am no good with names, I'll leave the name change up the board. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Let's Talk About...Diesel's WWF World title run

One of my all time favorite memories as a kid was turning on Raw that evening and seeing footage of the Diesel squash. I know that you don't make money by hot-shotting title changes and doing nonsensical things, but everyone once in a while it's great to do something that no one expects. That vision is burned into my memory. In hindsight it may have seemed like a bad decision, but I don't know how much money there was in Diesel chasing Backlund for the title anyways. As for his reign, it didn't work, but I hardly pin that all on Nash. They neutered his character and put him up against a terrible cast of challengers. Rest of the card was really shitty in 1995 too. I think that he would have been a monster star in the Attitude era had he hung around after Mania XII. His tweener character was basically Stone Cold before we had even seen Stone Cold.
