Jim Carrey - Most under-rated dramatic actor ever?
godthedog replied to a topic in Television & Film
he was fantastic in 'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind'. did EVERYTHING the performance needed to do, without ever drawing attention to himself, & kept up very nicely with winslet. that said, not winning and oscar does not equal "underrated." scorsese never won an oscar, and he sure as fuck isn't underrated. if anything, he gets too much attention because of his previous comedy work and every time he does a good dramatic performance people are all "holy SHIT! that's JIM CARREY and he's being DRAMATIC and he's GOOD at it!" had he not been known as the guy who once talked out of his ass, he wouldn't have had all the critics creaming over him in 'the truman show'. -
the goal was for it to be both, so either reaction is acceptable. i find myself laughing during emotional scenes in movies a lot, just to let the tension out. count me in with the 'chappelle's show' people. lots of the sketches are good ideas, but they just refuse to end long after the joke runs its course. the blind black racist was a perfect example of this. started out great, but they just milked that teat till it was dry, sore and bleeding.

ah, 'moulin rouge'. i should start a topic called "movies i like by directors i hate."
-
Who are you again? exactly what i would say. the accuracy of your imitation is amazing.
-
michael jackson - 'dangerous' this would be quite the good album if so many of the tracks didn't go on 2-3 minutes longer than they should, or have some stupid crap at the beginning that had nothing to do with the song.

why is zack malibu trying to act like me?

tritec has a very nice floor. i'm a bigger softie at heart than anyone on this board will ever know. my most prized possession is probably a homemade book of artwork/photo prints/poetry collages that a former girlfriend made for me last christmas. she's quite the accomplished visual artist as well, so it actually looked good. her poetry leaves something to be desired, but there was one 5-line ditty that i can still remember. it went: I used to remember... details of your body. The way your bottom lip protrudes a little further than the top. I closed my eyes too much around you.

i'm listening to this 'no alternative' compilation benefit cd that i haven't put on in years, and there's a goo goo dolls cover of "bitch" on it. it's exactly as bad as it sounds.

'36 chambers' is the best music ever to write papers about holocaust documentaries to.
-
bob dylan - live 1966 rolling stones - beggars banquet last night was "kickass earthy textures" night.

eh. it was okay. it took a turn for the worse with a deadeye dick/cranberries two-shot.

i came to take a break from paper-writing, and i expected a lot more exciting activity in this folder to distract me from my studies. i'm very disappointed.

i recently watched clips of a folk concert film called "isn't this a time", and mary travers (of peter, paul and mary fame) now looks almost EXACTLY like the jabba-the-hut incarnation of sally struthers from 'south park'. funny story behind that "mary now" picture i found (from mirandala.org): "Just the other day (as noted on the Sideblog), CNN reported that Mary is undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia. (Peter, Paul, and Mary’s website states that a full remission is expected within a matter of months and that Mary looks forward to touring again when she’s feeling better. Cross your fingers for a quick recovery!) So what picture does CNN choose to run with this story? What appealing photo of the singer in her glory days does CNN pick to accompany this human interest story? That’s right. The WORST PICTURE EVER TAKEN OF MARY TRAVERS - OR PERHAPS OF ANY HUMAN BEING. "Why, CNN? What’s the matter? Did you have a bad experience at summer camp? Were you scarred by enforced PPM sing-a-longs on family roadtrips with your Boomer parents? Are you driven to inexplicable levels of rage by three-hour pledge-drive PPM specials? Is this really misplaced anger at Joan Baez or Judy Collins? Why kick a folkie when she’s down?"

i could give a shit about the late fees. the problem is their horrid selection.
-
years ago, i put together a random 90s mix cd, and have long since forgotten what was on it. i'm listening to it now for the first time in a while. so far i've heard: pavement - "cut your hair" shudder to think - "hit liquor" presidents of the united states of america - "mach 5" i'm pleasantly surprised.

thank you. finally, someone else who sees the light.

i know you didn't get nominated, but it'll be okay. if you were on it, i would've voted for you.
-
that explains the rampant idolizing of blind melon and drowning pool today, doesn't it. something about the transfer of my copy of 'bringing it all back home' from vinyl to cd has made it much more enjoyable. i've listened to this thing 4 times since i bought it yesterday, and i find myself a lot more forgiving of dylan trying to sing way too high on "mr tambourine man" and "it's all over now, baby blue." maybe i've just grown as a person. and "they asked me for some collateral and i pulled down my pants" is just a great line.
-
that's easy for YOU to say, you're tied for the lead. wait, so am i. i want no part of this.
-
the lead singer of survivor now does the 'real men of genius' commercials. are you telling me you have no respect for the man who taught you that it was the thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of your rivals?
-
i had a dream once that i was listening to the radio and the dj said "and still, the number one selling album of all time is 'the charles manson christmas album' ".
-
bob dylan - bringing it all back home wu-tang clan - 36 chambers massive attack - mezzanine sadly, not a single one of these is a new purchase.
-
'grey gardens' for the 5th or 6th time, as i'm writing a term paper on it. i am so sick of watching this movie. once i'm done with the paper, i shall never think of it again.

two-shots version: 1. "golden slumbers"/"carry that weight" - beatles, 'abbey road' 2. "you gotta move"/"bitch" - stones, 'sticky fingers' 3. "there there"/"i will" - radiohead, 'hail to the thief'
