What do you mean? Historically, the conservative Republicans have generally been in favor of letting big corporations screw over anyone they pleased; this is an about-face for them. Plus don't forget all the various Homeland Security legislation that they pushed through which brought up serious invasion-of-privacy worries. But now the Republicans are more concerned with protecting people's rights and liberties, while the formerly ACLU-loving hippies are the ones who seem to not give a shit if the little guy gets fucked over in the name of big business.

I don't see how editing out Metallica is such a big deal. After all, Metallica are supposed to be real bitches about getting their money (remember Napster?) and it just might not've been economically feasible for the WWE to have paid the royalties. And in the end, it doesn't really change the show at all, the people are still singing the whole song anyway. Plus, we've all seen Sandman's entrance a thousand times, what does it matter in this one individual case that the music is changed?

Thanks for sharing the completely shocking news that a big war can have a devastating effect on a country's infrastructure. I had NO idea that could happen. Oh, and even the highest estimate of the war dead in this story (29,000) is a tiny, tiny fraction of the number of deaths that were directly caused by Saddam Hussein over the years. So how exactly was anyone supposed to right this wrong and get Saddam and his entire power base out of power without a military invasion? Also, I'm sick and fucking tired of the US being blamed for the suffering caused by the embargoes against Iraq. Those were UN embargoes, and they were a direct result of Saddam Hussein childishly refusing to do a single damn thing that he was ever told to do since the Gulf War.

I for one really enjoyed this movie, wasn't disappointed in it at all. I loved its exploration of how society had changed in the decades following the zombie plague. Romero also does something that pretty much no other zombie filmmakers ever do: he actually has sympathy for the zombies, and sees them as something more than just generic monsters to be destroyed. I loved the bit in the opening sequence where the zombies stared up at the fireworks, looks of almost childlike awe and wonder on their faces. Anyone else get the feeling that this movie was one big rotting middle finger to the Dawn remake? It's portrayal of the zombies and its whole general tone and atmosphere were almost an exact polar opposite of that film.

(sigh) If you'd read the first report, you'd see that the members of the inspection team included house Democrats who used to be highly critical of Gitmo and changed their minds after seeing firsthand what the place was actually like. Also, if the UN really does have evidence of torture, why don't they publish it instead of just vaguely alluding to it? I don't know why the US is apparently stonewalling the UN inspectors on this matter. I agree that it looks shady to do that without providing a damn good reason. But so far all the evidence given by credible observers supplies a picture of Gitmo as being a perfectly acceptable prison of war. (Except for that whole "Trials? Who needs trials?" approach [aside from the military tribunals which decided who got sent there in the first place], that really does need to change.)

Yes. The main reason for the war WAS to better the lives of the Iraqi civilians. All these problems would've been over a long time ago if those same Iraqi civilians would simply cooperate with us and with each other rather than committing daily acts of violence against us and each other. The problems in Iraq now are the Iraqis' fault, not America's.
