    Weekend Box Office Report

What worries me about Righteous Kill is that it's the same director who did Pacino's last movie, 88 Minutes, and that one was just howlingly bad.

    Weekend Box Office Report

Hey bob, just curious: how close do these estimates usually end up being to the real totals? I'd check myself, but my browser's being a dildo and won't let me open up more than one window at once for some reason.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

That's the same size as the new one. Anyway, I don't get the characterizations of the scientists here being some kind of wild-eyed wackos who are recklessly playing God without having ever given a single moment's thought to the possible consequences. This is CERN we're talking about. The kind of place graduates from Cal Tech to Harvard have wet dreams about working there someday. This isn't like Frankenstein hooking up the electrodes in his dungeon.

    Campaign 2008

Firstly, my weird mix of views aren't anywhere near any party's mainstream. Secondly: yeah, in theory Texas could stop being Republican in the near future. In theory the Large Hadron Collider could destroy the entire universe. I estimate their probabilities as being somewhat equitable. Texas has been more and more Republican with every passing year; for well over a decade, the pendelum has never even stopped speeding up, let alone stopped swinging in the Red's direction. With every presidential election, an overwhelming amount of more people come out and vote elephant and treat their opposition like a hurricane treats a Nawlins levy. That would be damn near the only reason I'd consider valid to go vote here, and even that has a pretty remote chance of ever actually happening. Why? No matter how people say it, voting isn't a "duty" or a "right". No law says that you have to do it. You can lose the ability to vote. And the argument of "if you don't vote, don't complain" is laughable. That's pretty much the same thing as "if you don't love America, then geeeyit out!". What about the various pissed-off Republicans who now really wish they hadn't voted for Bush? Considering they actively helped create the situation, should they have a right to complain? There's no handy-dandy wiki list like that one for TX. Google doesn't turn up anything in the first fifty hits either. The local news tends to skip local politics, too. As far as I can tell, there aren't any referendums or ballot initiatives coming up at all. Also, Texas politics are pretty bad at conning the voters, even worse than is standard most places. The last big referendum was about a proposed new tollway, which is a very unpopular idea since Dallas is getting to be almost like Jersey with the ludicrous overreliance on toll roads. Most people didn't want another one. So guess what the lawmakers did? They twisted the wording around so that a "yes" vote meant no and a "no" vote meant yes. The new tollway was approved. By a relatively close margin, since some people had figured out what was going on, but not enough. Oh, and the local politicians behind the tollway? They're not expected to lose their reelections this years. Welcome to hell, kids. Out of 32 representatives, a grand total of 4 of the elections aren't considered to be a lock for the incumbents. One of the Senators is up in a mildly competitive race, but A.his opponent is a "Democrat" who is running on a strong anti-immigration platform, and B.Texas hasn't elected any Dems whatsoever to any statewide offices in fourteen years anyway. As for smaller stuff like the mayor and such, our town is so small and our area is so heavily controlled by corporate concerns anyway that I don't think that a change of the particular butts in the seats would make any difference. That's just impossible. Because personal insults are so classy, especially the Shakespearean heights of wit which you utilized in order to burn me there. Oh, I am slain. Maybe you can come up with some jokes about my mama being so fat while you're at it.

Because, as previously explained, my vote has zero chance to make any change whatsoever. My state WILL give its electoral votes to McCain. There is NOTHING I can do which would have the slightest effect on the outcome in any way. Hence, the feeling of being disenfranchised. Plus, as stated, I don't really like any of my choices here. Picking the pile of shit which is less stinky isn't appealling in the first place, especially if at the end of the day I have no input on which pile of shit gets picked.

That's essentially how I feel about it, Agent. Dig deep enough into the views of any of these clowns, and I've inevitably found something offensive enough to be a dealbreaker. (Admittedly, it happens faster with Palin than the other three involved.) It's the ol' Giant Douche vs. Turd Sandwich. Plus, our wonky electoral college guarantees that my vote means nothing. I live in Texas. There's no fucking way that Texas's electoral points are going anywhere but directly to John McCain, probably with an easy margin of well over a million votes in his favor. What's my incentive in voting, then? I don't know or care enough about local politics for any of that to matter to me. Am I supposed to care about the meaningless "statement" I would make by adding my one voice to the massive (yet also meaningless) popular vote tally? The way the system's set up, voting for McCain is pointless overkill which he doesn't need, and voting for anyone else is quite literally throwing my vote away.

    F4W/WON WWE Notes - September 9th - 15th

When you spend a bunch of years taking a bunch of steroids and falling off a bunch of ladders, that's what happens.
  8. I dunno about True Blood. Considering that this is the same HBO Original Programming which brought us stuff like The Sopranoes, Oz, The Wire and so forth... so far this one doesn't look like it's playing in the same league. The laughably false Southern accents from Paquin and some other actors certainly aren't helping. Although she and the lead vampire guy do seem to have some chemistry already. Hopefully they'll take a step back from the over-Southerning which seemed to infect every single second of the pilot. I'll keep watching it, cuz I vaguely recall enjoying one of the books in the series and sadly I'm compelled to watch just about anything with vampires in it, but so far I'm not impressed. Then again, Buffy didn't really get very good until well into its second season, so maybe there's hope yet. ::puts Matt on Ignore:: Not literally, but, dude.

    WCW SuperBrawl VI

It's been eight or nine years since I saw this, but I remember being extremely bored by it. Wasn't one of the Sting/Luger matches like half an hour long? And with either of their opposing teams, you did not want to see those guys wrestle for thirty minutes. Flair/Savage was nowhere near some of the other stuff they've done, and Hogan/Giant was brutally bad. The only really worthwhile thing on here is the Pillman incident, and that's more for historical value more than anything else since it only lasts like a minute.

    WWE Raw - September 8, 2008

I'll just chime in that, if any wrestler ever tells me that they've never done drugs, I'm gonna assume that they're lying until definitively proven otherwise. As for disproof: a buddy of mine claimed he once saw Punk out back of a ROH show drinking a beer. He's not a completely trustworthy guy, but at least there's your "uncredible" source you asked about.

Problem is, if you really believe that Abortion = Murdering Innocent Babies, everything you just said is entirely irrelevant. That's what makes this issue so radically more polarizing than just about anything else. Pro-lifers are really serious when they say that abortion is infanticide, since they believe that life does start at conception. Pro-choicers are really serious when they say that abortion is about the woman's body, since they believe that life does not start at conception. It's that one tiny difference of opinion which leads to such a massive idealogical chasm that the supporters on either side are in complete shocked disbelief that anyone could disagree with them.

    Just refusing to job

Shawn was definitely in on it. So were Patterson, Brisco, and possibly Cornette. Hunter was in on it too, he's actually later started claiming that he was the first one who suggested they should just fuck Bret over if he wouldn't cooperate with their every demand. That kind of thing used to happen all the time in squash matches. It was a common, regular occurance for the stars to legitimately beat the living shit out of the nobodies. Check out any Kevin Sullivan squash match ever for an excellent example. But since the tradition of using no-name jobbers on television has mostly been abandoned, the old tradition of stretching the rookies has also mostly gone by the wayside. Mostly. Doesn't apply to any match featuring Bradshaw versus a skinny young kid.

I had a couple of coaches for teachers who taught psychology and chemistry, and were damn good at it. Just cause you coach the team at night doesn't mean you're incapable of doing your other job during the day.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

As I said, I'm not certain if there's ever been another one quite this big. But there have been some, yes, which shoot particles around near the speed of light for miles. Yeah, but the chance is so small that it's practically impossibe. We have a much higher chance of being wiped out by a meteor collision or a nuclear war or all kinds of other stuff than we do by someone switching this thing on. EDIT: after some exhaustive research (aka I went to wiki and typed in "particle accelerator") I found some info. In fact, CERN already had a 27-km long particle accelerator, the LEP Collider. They used that sucker for eleven years without triggering the apocalypse. And there have been many other large particle accelerators and colliders, though none quite as large as they build 'em in Switzerland; here is a list of the most physically historic ones. I counted at least ten which were over a mile long. This is not new technology, it's been around for a while; the Hadron Collider is just the most recent one. The only "scientists" who are seriously worried about this are alarmist nutcases who are either looking for publicity or don't know what the hell they're talking about.
  15. Most people always seemed to love Branagh's, but I always found him a little overrated. Everything he's ever directed tends to be wildly melodramatic and over-the-top; see his Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for a particularly headache-inducing example. Such a style can be fine, if you're doing something light and frothy like Much Ado About Nothing. But I prefer my Hamlets dark and broody, so Branagh & co. overacting a mile a minute while the background music loudly saws away for four goddamn hours was exhausting. And why the random shit with casting recognizable stars like Jack Lemmon in tiny meaningless parts? That's more distracting than anything else. But yeah, it was like Olivier's version compared to the Hawke crapfest. That was real poo. Even all the good actors came off like they didn't know what the fuck they were doing in that one.
  16. I've always thought he was a mediocre actor. Absolutely hated his Hamlet. He does however seem to have either a great agent or a great ability to pick roles, since he keeps getting high-profile roles (like Training Day) which have somehow kept him from being a forgotten relic of Generation X like he probably should've been. Weird there's not a thread here for True Blood. Anyone else catch it? Seemed like a pretty generic and predictable show, especially by HBO Original standards.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

What's the big deal? It's just a particle accelerator. These things have been around for years. I don't know if there's ever been one this large before, but it really shouldn't make any difference.

    Most Honorable Babyface Acts

A puro example: one of the many great moments from the masterpiece 6/9/95 match of Misawa and Kobashi vs. Kawada and Taue. About twenty minutes into the match, the heels have both completely destroyed Kobashi's knee, and he's basically crying in pain on the floor as he's trying to tape it back together. Meanwhile in the ring, Kobashi and Taue are using the handicap situation to beat the everliving shit out of top champion Misawa in a manner they'd never done before, practically beating him unconscious. At one point, Misawa is just laying there not moving while the other two are endlessly stomping him, and Kobashi crawls into the ring and actually lays on top of his partner, making them stomp on him instead. In print it sounds kinda gay, but watching the match it's pretty powerful.
  19. Nobody's mentioned Stagecoach or The Shootist? Those were my two favorite Wayne pictures. More love here for Treasure of the Sierre Madre, High Noon, and Unforgiven too. Is it just me, or is Tombstone the one western that EVERYone loves, even if they hate all westerns and never watch them? How the fuck have I never heard of this movie. (Even if he didn't actually direct it.)

Especially since SmokingGun apparently shot down the affair rumor as bullshit. I about 80% hate what I've heard about Palin, but any of her enemies are just doing her favors if they fall for and spread any untruthful dirty personal stories about her. When they're disproven, it just makes it look like the poor hot mommy is being picked on.

  23. The girl landing vagina-first on the knife, and the cooked dead chick with the baster stuck up her, and then the killer later fucking said dead chick as she was tied up like a turkey... ewww. The very definition of Do Not Want.
  24. That's pretty much how I felt too. (And Eli Roth's absolutely sickening display of misogyny in his Thanksgiving trailer sure as hell didn't make me feel any better.) Although it was a free screening that I'd ridden to with a couple of buddies, so walking out wasn't an option. Then again, I've never been much of a fan of Robert Rodriguez's work, besides El Mariachi and Sin City. Often felt like his action flicks are unnecessarily sadistic and brutal in their ultaviolence, overgore, and generally nihilistic tones.
