Comments which don't warrant a thread.

.... About half of that is normal, and the other half is just fucking OUT there. Oh, nobody with a 140 IQ has, does, or ever will go to Portland State. What, that's the first time you've run into a precocious gifted girl-turned-knowitall hippie chick? I've known at least a dozen women just like that. . . . I really gotta see your first movie whenever it eventually, inevitably gets made.
  2. Cool, I can't wait for the director's commentary tra- ...awww.

    SPIDER-MAN 4

Venom looked okay, but everything about Eddie Brock was completely fucked off, from the retconning of his character to the insane casting of That 70s Kid as Venom for chrissakes. Anyway, the symbiote/Venom story is so complicated you couldn't possibly do justice to it in just one movie, especially with two other villains running around. Truthfully, that's the best idea I've heard. The problem isn't that Spiderman doesn't have enough villains; there are dozens of 'em. The problem is he doesn't have enough really good villains which are complicated and menacing enough to serve as the Big Bad. Someone like Hobgoblin, Vulture, or Rhino might be okay for a henchman type, but they're just not deep enough to serve as the lead antagonist.

    Desert Island Draft: Movie Edition

Hard-Boiled John Woo's American movies have been mostly shit, and truthfully even a lot of his Hong Kong stuff doesn't age so well. But HOLY FECES is this one just flat-out amazing. Some of the best crazy balls-out gunfights in cinematic history are clustered together into one big box of awesome. Movies like Shoot 'Em Up are essentially one long tribute to this flick.

    Campaign 2008

It's sometimes not so quick or painless. The electric chair and gas chamber are both infamous for often, shall we say, not getting it right on the first try. Lethal injection is better, but even there the cocktail of chemicals they inject are designed more to paralyze the subject so that they don't upset the viewing audience, and less to actually kill them instantly.

    Book recommendations

I've never come across much that was any good. Even the stuff with August Derlith finishing up Lovecraft's old unwritten notes and fragments came off like someone else trying to ape HP's style. Neil Gaiman had a cute short story where he mixed Cthulhu stuff with Sherlock Holmes, but that's all that comes to mind.

Teachers not being taught math properly

My high school kind of had a multi-tier system. It had regular classes, and then Honors classes, and then AP classes. These weren't offered in all the subjects, it was kinda haphazard, but English, math, science, and social studies all tended to go that way. Plus maybe some remedial classes for the really dumb/bad kids, but I don't remember exactly.
  10. I need to watch more 70s exploitation stuff. I'm not a complete virgin in that aspect, I've seen the Coffys and Shafts of the world, but haven't even begun to delve into the more obscure shit. Easier said than done. In Tennessee, most of the other non-chain video stores were going out of business. Here in Texas, I've seen four Blockbusters relatively near my house, but no other video stores whatsoever. Plus, it's just easier, since if you sign up at one Blockbuster you can rent at any one of 'em anywhere in the country, and none of the other stores offer that, you have to sign up separately at each location. So? There's a million women with great asses. How did this one become famous? Why is she famous? For what reason did she start appearing on all those talk shows? I'd never heard of her either until she showed up at Wrestlemania, and all over the internet it was all "KIM KAR OMG".
  11. Who the hell is Kim Kardashian, and how/why is she famous? I look her up on IMDB, and she's someone who just came out of nowhere to suddenly appear on a whole bunch of talk shows. Partly a matter of financial success/critical acclaim, and partly a matter of sheer distribution. Any average Blockbuster probably has all the movies you listed in the first group. They would have none of the films in the second group. Hell, even I haven't seen any of them, though I did once rent Martin from an indy video store and just never got around to watching it.

    Desert Island Draft: Movie Edition

I'm kinda interested in that one, but haven't gotten around to it. Von Trier is indeed a pretentious douche, making stuff which I really loved (The Kingdom) and really hated (Manderlay) and really loved AND really hated simultaneously (Dogville), plus the occasional work which I kinda remember being pretty good but don't recall any details (Zentropa). But his bizarre mischevious prankster nature is one of the things I really dislike about him, so I'm not sure if I'd want to watch a documentary which was specifically about him being a manipulative dick.

No, I don't know that guy, since like the vast majority of people I've never belonged to a country club.

Teachers not being taught math properly

Yeah, how so? I took a couple of AP classes, and didn't see anything wrong with them, other than requiring a crazy amount of studying and homework.

Switch out one of my team for one of their team. CC's the only really competent wrestler, and JHawk and Scroby are both little skinny guys while I am... not. It did that with everybody's password. PM me with your account name and I'll switch it back for you. Considering the source, I'll take that compliment. As for the new layout, yeah, it's not as good as the old one. That was Illustrious's decision, since he's the server owner and tech guy, and apparently the new system makes his job a lot easier. But it's not THAT bad, it's still the same board, only a few minor changes. We've got six different skins, surely one of them will appeal to you. Yall come on back now, y'hear.

Supreme Court upholds the Right to Bear Arms

Obviously there's a correlation. But those countries also had a hell of a lot less guns to begin with than we do. It's a lot easier for a Japan or a United Kingdom to crack down on guns; they've had those laws in place for decades, and it's easier to keep a lid on the black market in a much smaller geographic area like that. But here's America, which already has many more guns than people, plus wide-open borders for smuggling and the world's biggest black market in every item imaginable. And it's a country where millions upon millions of people like having guns. How would you even begin to take all those guns away?

    Campaign 2008

You think that doesn't happen now? Not all the time, but there are plenty of examples of controversial accounts of a suspect being shot "while trying to escape/resisting arrest". Aye, there's the rub. How many of these guys do you think the police actually catch in the act with their pants down, dick-deep in a toddler? Sometimes there's DNA evidence, semen and such gathered by a rape kit from a victim after the fact, but even that isn't always 100%. Like many adult rape cases, a whole lot of pedophilia cases go down without much more evidence than the child's claim they were molested.

Supreme Court upholds the Right to Bear Arms

I wish I could find the report I saw, but it basically said that the majority of gun violence was committed with illegal guns anyway. That is, guns which weren't registered and were used by people which the law already said weren't supposed to have those guns. A new ban will not do anything to solve that.
  19. No. No we do not. If I had the chance to kick anyone in the movie business right in the nuts, anyone at all, I'd merrilly skip past Uwe Boll and Michael Bay in order to punt a fieldgoal with the testicles of the guys who made Epic Movie.

    Spoilers for July 3rd.

He meant Rick Martel, they feuded briefly around 98. Kinda weird to randomly mention him in the list of names though. ...wait, when the hell did Booker ever beat Steve Austin?! They were on the same side during Invasion, and Booker was a midcard jobber for the rest of Austin's in-ring career. I don't remember them ever wrestling each other at all, much less Booker going over. The closest they ever came was when Booker ran in on the title match at KOTR 2001... and promptly threw Austin over the announce table too hard and wound up breaking his hand, so I can't imagine he'd be proudly bringing that up. I call shenanigans.

Teachers not being taught math properly

Some teachers don't have a choice about teaching towards the standardized tests. Here in Texas, if a kid doesn't pass the test, they either have to go to summer school or repeat the grade. This is completely separate from individual classroom grades which are also required to pass.

    School me on the ATL

That's kind of my point, in most places you don't need a lot of lane changes at night. I've been through Atlanta at midnight several times, and it's still busier than any other place I've seen for that time.

Marney is... I dunno. She doesn't talk much about whatever's been keeping her away. She was gone for weeks, then back, then gone again. Har har. It's been slow since the software changeover, but we're still there.

    School me on the ATL

That's not just an Atlanta thing, those nasty little fuckers are all over the southeast. Horrible little devils, they're small enough that they're easy to miss, but their bites are poisonous enough that they can really fuck you up, especially if you don't notice it early enough. Ditto about the traffic. Admittedly I've never driven in NY or LA, but I've been around about half of this country, and Atlanta traffic is one of the more nightmarish experiences I've ever seen. My brother once described it perfectly: "There's eight lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper, going eighty miles an hour, and the car behind me is honking at me to go faster, and it's a cop." That pretty much nails it for rush hour, which can be defined as any time the sun is up. At night and on the weekend it's a bit easier, but still has way more volume than any other city I've seen at those times.

Vern is still around at the Pit. Chick has been MIA for a while, but in the biz it's typically seen as a negative for an up-&-coming worker to be posting on message boards, so that could be part of it.
