Tip on that. Do your search, and then queue from a user with his/her name bolded black. That means they have an upload slot available and you'll generally start your download immediately. Another thing that doesn't hurt is queueing from a user that has a high upload bandwidth so their list moves faster. As far as kazaa goes, I don't recommend any of them. It's far too tainted and too high of a chance to catch a computer cold or something on it.

Soulseek has never had 'patches' as far as I know. Hell I just installed it and it works fine with basic setting up. Pretty easy. It does randomly shut down or bug out sometimes, but it's quite worth it.
