2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

Yeah, they mentioned that on.......one of the 50 or so preview shows I've watched since yesterday. I'm torn on that one - they were in the Heritage Classic, and New York is an Original Six and a bonafide hockey town; it's not like a game in the Georgia Dome or anything.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

The Vezina could go a few different ways either - Nabokov, Broduer, Kipper, Lundqvist, and even Luongo, Giguere and Ward could all be candidates. It's probably gonna be really close between Nabokov and Lundqvist after looking at the stats - I didn't realise he had that many shutouts.

As great as the ideas sound, an all-Canadian or all-Original Six conference is grossly unfair. My biggest concern is fairness in the alignment. Should Detroit play 20 games in each time zone when Anaheim or San Jose play 77 games in the Pacific? If they can't remedy that (or similar inconstitencies), they need to do something along the lines of, say, drawing up the divisions by latitude instead of longitude. Even something along the lines of baseball, with an east/central/west in each conference sounds pretty do-able. Don Cherry made a point Saturday about how much more entertaining 1-8 is than the division-based playoff seedings. So maybe, using my conference re-alignment above, four division winners and four wild cards, but let the best play the worst, and so on, regardless of division.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

I'd like to see Ottawa-Anaheim again, just so I can hear Bryan Murray say "Selanne" again. I can't get over the contrast of my opinion on Washington now, compared to a month ago. What a remarkable stretch of hockey.

Everything I would say has already been said. So, I'll offer a comment on the concept as a whole: This is probably the best idea yet to get some good discussion going.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

Really about Savard? Yeah, I guess that makes sense - none with the B's last year, then the Thrash and Flames when they both sucked. That's also a really interesting point about the pressure on the Habs. Habs in five.. Penguins in six. Ottawa can't possibly be as disorganized as they have been the last month, but it's easy to overlook how much playoff experience there is on the Pens. Caps in five. Washington this hot? This series is all theirs. Rangers in six. It's weird to not pick New Jersey in the first round - they've really been the Detroit of the East for as long as I can remember. Still, 1-7? They'll play better than that, but they're not beating the Rangers. WESTERN CONFERENCE Wings in five. Flames in seven. This one should be good. The Flames underachieved in the playoffs last year, the Sharks have for about five or six years. The Flames are probably the worst draw the Sharks could have got. Wild in five. This might be the best series of the opening eight. Ducks in four. The season series doesn't matter. Dallas has been a mess for a few weeks now.

That would be awesome. Every series in the West looks good as well: A win by Colorado would move them into 6th, and they'd play Minnesota, so a potential playoff matchup this afternoon. If Colorado loses, Minnesota would play Calgary (which, in my opinion, could be the best first-round series), and Colorado would play San Jose. Anaheim-Dallas in 4-5 and Detroit-Nasvhille in 1-8 are both divisional matchups.

What do you prefer, cinnamon raisin? Go move to Iowa. I suppose that's my answer, as CR have been three of the five bagels I've had in my life. Why am I moving to Iowa? It would throw my name into arrears, for one thing.

Yeah, you can read my post above. Bagel-lovin mothefucker. Edit: Probably too snide, but I'd wanted to call someone a (hyphenated)-loving motherfucker for like, a week. Yeah, well, I hate your division names. Francis Division was a stretch. But who's a legend who played for a Southeastern team? Could we ever see a Brian Bradley or John Vanbiesbrouck division? I hope not. And, the Caps' win locks Alex O for the Hart. I also think it gives Boudreau the nod for the Jack Adams. Discuss. I'm sure this will come as shocking news, but I'm delighted to see the Bruins again in the first round.

  13. I'd never heard about that, but I happened upon this on YouTube earlier: Randy Johnson is probably my answer. It's definitely my answer if the alligator in Happy Gilmore doesn't count.

ESPN sucks, so do thread closers

Anyone see PTI yesterday? I had it on but was on the phone for this segment: "13-year-old girl named Alexis Rodriguez gets attacked by a hawk at Fenway". Have the Sox even played at Fenway yet? Weren't they in Oakland all week? They're certainly in Toronto now.

My mom asked me about the standings earlier in the week, and why Carolina was in third, despite having the eighth-most points. My explaining of the division leader rule made me realise, once again, how stupid it is. Thus, I came up with division re-alignment if/when Winnipeg and Kansas City get teams again: Four divisions per conference, four teams per division. I've always liked the idea of divisional matches in the playoffs and division winners. Howe Conference Messier Division: Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Colorado Gretzky Division: L.A., San Jose, Phoenix, Anaheim Hull Division: St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas, Kansas City Yzerman Division: Detroit, Columbus, Chicago, Winnepeg Orr Conference Sittler Division:Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo Bossy Division: Long Island, New York, New Jersey, Boston Lemieux Division: Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, Nashville Francis Division: Carolina, Atlanta, Florida, Tampa Six games apiece against inter-division opponents 18 Four games apiece against inter-conference opponents 30 Two games apieces against out-of-conference opponents 32 That's 80 games, which is better. I don't have a problem per se with how many games are played, but moreso, when the season finishes. I like it starting on Thanksgiving weekend as it does now, but it really should be over by May 2-4. Yzerman's been talking about making it 84 games instead of 82. If that comes into effect, then the pre-season should be cut from nine games to four. There's no need for nine pre-season games.

    This Week in Baseball 3/30 - 4/6

They're exceeding my expectations for this year, that's for sure. Just a fantastic run through a couple of really tough lineups. I came in expecting to hate the retro unis, but they grew on me. They look better on the players than I expected they would. It's probably that the jerseys are a lot looser than the originals were. What year are we in? It certainly didn't look like 2008 in Toronto tonight. Still, good game. 1-4 could have easily had wins by now, and one of them does.

So, as discussed, a pretty unique situation with the playoffs. With the exception of Washington-CarLOLina (I'm gonna steal that), the six other teams in 1-8 have all clinched. If Washington wins Sunday, they're in. If they don't, Carolina's in - I'm hammered, but is that right? Oh yeah, Czech and the Hawks continue to fuck over gamblers across the continent. For all the talk early this week of "Nashville will get in because all they have to do is beat St. Louis and Chicago", Chicago gets the win tonight.

    Gas Price Check...

On Sunday I was in Buffalo, and decided I had to get gas because it was such a bargain: 3.45 a gallon. This compared to the 109.9 I put in the tank the previous day - works out to 4.15 a gallon.

I'd love to see the Habs-Bruins in the first round, given the history and rivalry. The season series sweetens the deal as well. Plus, despite the NHL marketing machine would probably overkilling it, but a first-round matchup of Pittsburgh vs. Washington would be pretty cool.
