Remember his rushing yards record just recently fell to Emmitt Smith (who's still tacking onto it amazingly enough), and Jim Brown had that record when the NFL wasn't playing a 16-game schedule. Then you also have guys like Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, BO JACKSON~, Paul Hornung, Barry Sanders, Tony Dorsett, and the list goes on and on. And of course modern day you have a ton of running backs who could be considered potential hall of famers besides Smith- Jamal Lewis, Ahman Green, Curtis Martin... It's quite a bit of competition, but Payton's still up there. Outside Barry Sanders, and Jim Brown, and...(sigh) Emmitt Smith, you can't really put any of those other guys on Walters level. The guy was just simply amazing to watch and did it for a while. I mean, yes, Jim Brown is probably the best running back to play the game, and barry sanders if he had anything resembling a offensive line would probably be above him too ( I still argue that if any of them had the line that Emmitt had, they would have had 3000 yard seasons every year) But he is on a VERY short list of running backs. I still say Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton have got to be everyones 1-2-3 in whatever order you want to put them in.

Cameras followed him to watch these amazing workouts. That coupled with natural talent is why Walter Payton was so good. Unless you are suggesting that OJ Simpson and Jim Brown and every other great running back before him were also juicing up. Maybe Jesse Owens got in a time machine, came in the future, shot up some anabolic steroids and went back in time to be one of the most amazing atheletes of all time too? I still think that the Wesley/Jackson trade was unbelievably bad for Houston. Okay, you take wesley, a decent shooter, not that good of a point guard, undersized, bad defender and give up your, and this is a point made my alot of the Rockets players after the trade, most consistant player on the team. He is probably the top perimeter defender, the most consistant shooter and scorer, can rebound, pass and handles the ball very well. So basically, he gives you all of wesleys pluses, without the minuses. Take into account that the Rockets JUST traded for Jon Barry, who is basically the exact same player as Wesley, and the trade makes even less sense. So in Sura, Wesley, and Barry, they have 3 guy s that they will probably be using at the point, all of which are 2 guards. Sura is the best one of the group defensively, rebounding and ball handling wise, but compared to Jackson, it just doesn't add up. I am just not sure at all what is up with this trade. On the NBA frount, I am happy that Phoenix lost that game to San Antonio, because they were (outside of Steve Nash and the coach) developing this attitude that they were invincible. They hadn't suffered a REAL lost yet (the biggest lost was 5 points in overtime and the other two were by 4 points combined) They needed this one and against a great team like the spurs makes it even better. I am interested to see how they bounce back against the Hornets tonight. I personally can't stand college hoops, because honestly, its a bunch of guys that kinda suck now with a few standouts. I mean honestly, its just BAD basketball most of the time. In a NBA that is 60-61 at the end, I can still enjoy because I like a great defensive effort. Hell, I have watched every single Hawks game this year and i will watch Josh Smith play a thousand times over before I watch too many Tech games. I think the energy of the crowd makes college sports look better than the pro game honestly. Because when it comes to the pace and the skill level, college basketball can't really compete. College football...i actually do enjoy. not more than the pros mind you, but I do enjoy it. The players still look very skilled and don't look amatuerish like the BBall player do to me. I guess thats just me though. I prefer the NBA and NFL anyday though.
