Well, in Spikes little psycho speech he said Spike: I went to find it of course Buffy: Find what? Spike: To find IT...the thing that would make me fit...the spark. He went looking for the soul. But the thing that makes it such a incredible love story to me is that Spike fell in love with her DESPITE not having a soul. He was willing to do good, just for her. He was willing to die, for her. Her initial rejection (and she did have her reasons) made the relationship more impossible than the Angel one. Her emptiness in season 6 that lead her to him...while it was dark, it was almost destiny. Spike took advantage of her feelings of being outside of humanity to try and make her his own. While this was selfish and somewhat evil, it was a evil formed of love. Then when he got the soul...oh yeah...the truth came a running all through season 7. But like I said, I would call Anya/Xander one of the greatest love stories that I have ever seen or read.

Yeah. I think it was the 3 season build that gave Buffy Spike that much more umph. Especially when you watch season 2 and 4 and look at where Spike came from. It is amazing character development really.
